For the first time, we're hearing from the father of a missing Winter Haven college student.
Jean Voltaire says his daughter was worried sick about a critical decision
she had to make right before she disappeared.
He says he can't believe his 22-year-old daughter, Christina
Voltaire, is still missing. "Everybody feels she's still alive, maybe
somewhere waiting for the big moment to be liberated."

He adds, "I will never give up until we find something."
One month ago, Christina Voltaire, a college student, seemed to have disappeared
without a trace from her Winter Haven apartment, where she lived alone.
Her neighbor and good friend, Charles Gilles, borrowed her car
that evening, but says when he returned she was gone. She'd left her
car and purse behind. A week ago, he said, "It's no way in the world
somebody can just vanish like that."
Police consider her endangered and want to talk to the brother of
Charles Gilles. Police say Dieuseul Gilles once dated Christina and she could be traveling with him.
But Christina's father says she would never abandon her Nuclear Medicine
studies at Keiser University in Lakeland. She moved to the United
States from Haiti as a teen and was on a mission to make a good living
so she could bring her mother and siblings here.
Jean Voltaire says she wasn't having any problems at school
but he does say she had one critical decision to make in her personal
life. "She had to choose between Dieuseul and this guy that borrowed her car."
But Charles claims he and Christina were never a couple.
Meanwhile, Dieuseul has an attorney who says he was in Miami with his
new girlfriend and their child when Christina went missing. Bryon
Hileman says his client is willing to speak with Winter Haven police just as long as he can be there.

Police investigate ex-boyfriend of missing Lakeland woman Christina Voltaire

11:26 PM, Mar 16, 2011

Winter Haven, Florida - For more than two months, Winter Haven
police have been trying to track down leads into the disappearance
of 22-year-old Christina Voltaire. She is considered missing and endangered.
On Wednesday the police department released new information in their
investigation into an ex-boyfriend. They initially believed Christina
could have been traveling with Dieuseul Pierre-Gilles, but they no
longer believe that was the case, since he says he was out of town when
she went missing.
According to police, his cell phone records turned up no significant
information. Additionally, Pierre-Gilles has stated that he was in
South Florida visiting his girlfriend who had just given birth to their
baby.

Voltaire, a Lakeland college student, was last seen on January 8 of
this year at her Winter Haven apartment, where she lived alone at
"Berkshires at Winter Haven" apartments at Avenue K Southeast.
Jean Voltaire is her father. He says she would never abandon her
Nuclear Medicine studies at Keiser University. He says she was just
about to complete the program.

Click here to watch his interview.

On January 8 around 7 p.m. Charles Pierre-Gilles -- Christina's
close friend since high school and brother of her ex-boyfriend Dieuseul
Pierre-Gilles -- says he dropped by her apartment to borrow her car
after his own car broke down on the side of the road. The two are also
neighbors.

He says Christina was drinking tea and was dressed in a black robe. He
quickly borrowed the keys to her car and drove it to meet his mechanic.
When he returned about 45 minutes later, he says Voltaire was gone.

Charles says, "When I returned back I had a key so I let myself in
and I opened the door. Everything is still in place, the same way it
was before. The only thing missing is Christina."

He adds that her robe was on the corner of the bed and her books, purse
and laptop were nearby. Christina Voltaire hasn't returned or been
heard from since.

Click here to watch more of his interview.

Voltaire's ex-boyfriend has maintained he made an ATM withdrawal in
South Florida on the day she went missing, but the receipt is missing.

Winter Haven Police recently obtained video footage from the Publix
grocery store in Coconut Grove and say preliminary reviews are
inconclusive due to the quality of the video.
The footage was turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for enhanced review of the images.

Christina's father told 10 News that his daughter told him she had one
critical decision to make in her personal life: "She had to choose
between Dieuseul and this guy that borrowed her car."

But Charles claims he and Christina were never a couple and Dieuseul maintains that he and Christina broke up on good terms.

If you or someone you know has seen or heard from Christina Voltaire or
if you know anything about this case, contact Detective Rod Esteve at
863-291-5694 or Heartland Crime Stoppers at 800-226-TIPS.
You can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a CASH Reward.

WINTER HAVEN — City police said Monday they've received what may be a
credible tip on the disappearance of a 22-year-old woman.

Christina Voltaire went missing sometime after 7:45 p.m. the night of Jan. 8.

The Haitian-born woman lived alone in the Berkshire Apartments on Avenue K, S.E., in Winter Haven.

Lt. Brad Coleman said police received the tip over the weekend, but did not go into details.

Charles Pierre Gilles, 25, reported Voltaire missing. He lives in the
same apartment complex and describes himself as “a close friend” to
Voltaire, but not her boyfriend.

Gilles said there was no sign of a forced entry into Voltaire's
apartment and no sign of a struggle. Her apartment is just inside an
unlocked entrance to the building.

Gilles said Voltaire, who was not feeling well, had her laptop on the
bed and had been doing homework. She is a student at Keiser University
and took her education seriously, Gilles said.

Gilles said he left Volarire for 45 minutes, during which time she disappeared.

Police said they checked on Gilles' whereabouts during the 45 minutes and his alibi checked out.

Gilles said he was driving home that Saturday evening from his job at a
time-share resort when the engine blew on his car. He walked to
Voltaire's home and drove her car back to where he'd left his vehicle.
There, he met a friend who looked over the damage.

Gilles said he spent several minutes with Voltaire before leaving in
her car. He said Voltaire had put on a short black robe, a sure signal
she wouldn't be leaving the apartment that night.

Gilles said he was certain he locked the door on the way out.

When he returned, he used a key to come in the front door, but he doesn't know whether the door was unlocked when he returned.

Coleman said Gilles has been cooperative with police and allowed them to check his car and apartment for any possible evidence.

Voltaire didn't own credit cards or a cellphone, both of which leave
electronic signatures that can be used by investigators to track
missing people.

She has been entered into state and national databases for missing people.

Her father, Jean Yves Voltaire who lives in Palm Bay, said he got a call from his daughter about 1 a.m. a couple of months ago.

“She said she was scared because her boyfriend was so (physically) aggressive,” Jean Yves Voltaire said.

The boyfriend was not Gilles, the elder Voltaire said, “but he was mad
because of the relationship my daughter had with Charles.”

Detective Rod Esteve, who leads the investigation, said detectives have
spoken through intermediaries with the boyfriend and plan to interview
him directly. However, Esteve described the man as “an estranged
boyfriend.”

Christina Voltaire lost a year-old girl, Audrey, on Jan. 26, 2010. The
cause of the baby's death was listed as “undetermined” by the Medical
Examiner's Office. Police have been checking to determine whether she
may have been depressed over the child's death.

Gilles said she was coping as well as could be expected.

Jean Yves Voltaire said his daughter was planning to move back with the
family in Palm Bay to attend the Keiser campus there and to visit her
mother in Haiti in April.

“Christina wasn't suicidal,” Jean Yves Voltaire said. “She had a future.”

Anyone with information about Voltaire is asked to call Detective Rod
Esteve at 863-221-5694 or Polk County Crime Stoppers at 800-226-8477.
Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information
leading to the arrest of anyone who may have abducted Voltaire.

July 24, 2011

More than seven months later, Christina Voltaire's disappearance remains a mystery.
There were no signs of a struggle in the 22-year-old woman's apartment.
Her purse, driver's license, laptop and money were left behind.
Police say there hasn't been a sign of her since her friend,
Charles Pierre Gilles, borrowed her car Jan. 8. They said they have no
reason to believe she is alive.

"We have family and friends out there of Christina Voltaire
who deserve an opportunity for closure and an opportunity to see justice
served," Winter Haven police lieutenant Brad Coleman said. "That's what
I think is most frustrating about this case."

Police have turned to the Haitian community for help.
Minister and family friend Joseph Clergeot has posted messages in
Haitian stores. He said that's the only hope of finding her.

Coleman hopes it produces answers.

"We are kind of at a dead end in this case," he said. "We really need someone with information to step forward and help us."

WINTER HAVEN | Christina Voltaire felt a bit under the weather a
year ago today. She curled up in bed wearing a robe and perused her laptop.

Then she disappeared "just like that," Winter Haven Police Chief Gary Hester said. "She vanished into thin air."
In the wake of her disappearance on Jan. 8 last year, investigators
acknowledge that despite searches and other efforts, there are so far no
good clues or solid suspects in the case.
If Voltaire is alive, and police say that chance is getting increasingly
slim, she is 23. The Haitian woman was a student at Keiser University in
Lakeland with a promising future.
"We hope and pray for the best, but my experience tells me that with each
passing day the likelihood of a horrible outcome increases," Hester said.
Her belongings are stashed at the police department and her father's Palm Bay home.
Police have received just two Crime Stoppers tips and just a few calls, none of which have led anywhere.
Voltaire was last seen at her home in the Berkshire Apartments on Avenue K
Southeast by a man Hester said she was "romantically involved" with,
Charles Pierre-Gilles, 26.
That Saturday evening, Pierre-Gilles said he borrowed Voltaire's car and returned about an hour later to find her gone.
All her belongings, including a laptop, purse, keys and the black robe she
was wearing earlier that night, were left behind in the apartment.
There was no sign of a struggle, police said, which means that if she left with someone, it likely was someone she knew.
Hester said police continue to work the case and talk to people at local Haitian churches and in her apartment complex.

Missing Winter Haven college student wanted locks changed

02/2012

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- There's new information in the case of a missing Winter Haven college student.

Christina Voltaire disappeared from her apartment, where she'd been
studying Nuclear Medicine and having a cup of tea, in January of
2011. The 22-year-old lived alone.

Winter Haven Police Chief Gary Hester told a producer for a TV show
the news during a recent interview. He says the same day Christina went
missing she'd asked her apartment manager to have the locks changed in
her unit.

Hester says, "They had not completed the work, but that was sometime
around 10 o'clock that morning that she'd went to the office and
requested that."

Christina's father was clearly stunned by the news and said, "I've never heard about that."

Her neighbor and good friend, Charles Gilles, borrowed her car that
evening, but says when he returned she was gone. She'd left her car and
purse behind. He said back then, "It's no way in the world somebody can
just vanish like that."

Police consider her endangered and have spoken with the brother of
Charles Gilles. Police say Dieuseul Gilles once dated Christina and they
originally thought she could be traveling with him.

But Christina's father maintained that she would never abandon her
studies at Keiser University in Lakeland. She moved to the United States
from Haiti as a teen and was on a mission to make a good living so she
could bring her mother and siblings here.

Jean Voltaire says she wasn't having any problems at school, but he
does say she had one critical decision to make in her personal life.
"She had to choose between Dieuseul and this guy that borrowed her car."

But Charles claims he and Christina were never a couple.

Meanwhile, Dieuseul's attorney, Bryon Hileman, has maintained that
his client was in Miami with his new girlfriend and their child when
Christina went missing.

Both brothers say they did not have keys to Christina's apartment.
