"Infant John" TWITTY - 9 Months - Chattanooga TN
A Chattanooga mother has been charged in connection with a fire that
left her 9-month-old son severely burned. The fire started just before 7
p.m. in the kitchen of a unit at the Missionary Heights apartments on
Latimore Street.
According to fire department spokesperson Bruce Garner, light smoke
was coming out of the unit when firefighters arrived. When firefighters
entered the two-story apartment, they found the fire in the kitchen and
quickly got the blaze under control. The rest of the apartment had
smoke and water damage, Garner said.
Thursday morning, fire investigators ruled the fire accidental but
Chattanooga police arrested the mother, 23 year-old Alisha Twitty on
charges of aggravated child abuse and neglect and another charge of
child abuse and neglect. Lt. Henry McElvain with the Chattanooga Fire
Investigation Division said that around 7:00 p.m. Twitty was heating up a
pan of grease on the stove to cook some fries and then left her
apartment to make a phone call at a neighbor's apartment, leaving her
two children alone.
At some point, as Twitty was returning to her apartment, some
children from neighboring apartments yelled to her that her apartment
was on fire. Twitty reportedly went inside and carried her two children
out. McElvain said the 9 month-old boy sustained burns to his face,
arms and legs. The 2 year-old boy appeared to be uninjured. Chattanooga
firefighters arrived moments later and managed to confine most of the
fire damage to the kitchen area.
Overnight, the 9 month-old baby was transferred to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia.
