"Toddler John Doe" - 3 yo/ Accused: Taylor Tomtan - Bellingham WA
BELLINGHAM, Washington -- A man was
arrested in Bellingham on Wednesday evening after hospital workers
noticed a 3-year-old with burns, bruises and a broken bone, the
Bellingham Police Department said.Taylor J. Tomtan, 20, was
arrested on charges of first-degree child assault in what police said
was an ongoing investigation in which Tomtan is suspected of abusing the
boy.Police and a Child Protection Services employee went to St.
Joseph's Emergency Room after receiving a call from emergency room
workers, police said. The workers told police that the child's mother
brought him to the ER for treatment of some sort.
Police said Tomtan was the mother's boyfriend and was babysitting
the child while the mother was at work.Emergency
room workers said the boy had suffered a broken leg, a third-degree
burn on his finger, several bruises, an abrasion and a scrape.Tomtan
initially told police that he didn't hurt the child and speculated as
to how he thought the injuries may have occurred, police said. Police
arrested Tomtan based on probable cause, however, after they received a
report from a Harborview Medical Center physician who specializes in
child abuse and neglect.
Police said that after he was arrested, Tomtan admitted to causing the boy's injuries.
