Police: Father Dropped Infant Twice After Abduction
6:56 p.m. EDT, April 24, 2011
AKRON, Ohio—
An Amber Alert for a 5-week-old Akron baby has ended with a father behind bars. A witness told Akron police the suspect dropped the baby twice while trying to escape.
Police arrested Demarick Lewis, 19, of Akron, on Sunday morning on suspicion of abduction. The kidnapping took place Saturday night after Lewis fought with the baby's mother over custody, police said.
"There was a domestic dispute there at that location and apparently involved the child, him wanting to take the child and the mother not wanting to give up the child," Akron Police Det. Pat McMillian said.
Police said Lewis snatched the infant out of his carrier at the grandparents home on Margaret Street, and took off running with the baby in his arms. The baby's maternal grandfather told police he chased after Lewis and the child.
The grandfather told police that as Lewis was running away he dropped the infant twice; Once as he was trying to jump over a fence, and a second time at Mason Park School, reportedly on a concrete step.
Lewis got away with the baby boy, police said, and an Amber Alert was issued.
Det. McMillian said that while they were re-tracing Lewis' alleged escape route they found a loaded handgun.
Police are going to do DNA testing on the gun to see if Lewis was the one who dropped it.
Sunday morning, technology led detectives to Lewis and the baby at an apartment on Kline Avenue in Akron.
Investigators used the suspect's cell phone to find him. "We can ping phones and find out the location of certain individuals and that's what we did in this case," McMillian said.
A woman at the victim's home, who identified herself as the baby's grandmother, told Fox 8 News off-camera that the infant was checked out at a hospital, and was not hurt.
She said mom and baby were enjoying a quiet Easter Sunday together, and they were just glad to have him back.
Lewis has not been formally charged with a crime.
