GREAT BRITAIN • Alexis MATHESON, 6 weeks old ~ Aberdeen
A woman who examined a six-week-old baby days before she was allegedly murdered said the child’s eyes were red and bloodshot.
Mark Simpson is on trial accused of murdering Alexis Matheson by assaulting her in Deansloch Crescent in Aberdeen between November 8 and December 9, 2007.
The 29-year-old is alleged to have seized the infant, shaken her and compressed her chest, injuring the child so severely that she later died in hospital in Edinburgh on December 10.
The jury heard evidence about the child’s health from two midwives, two health visitors and two doctors at Aberdeen High Court yesterday.
In only six weeks, the baby suffered a number of illnesses including constipation, nappy rash and oral thrush, and was failing to put on weight properly.
Health visitor Victoria Drummond, 37, said she went to the Aberdeen address to check on mother and baby four days before Alexis died.
She saw that the infant had bloodshot eyes, which she was told by the mother Ilona Sheach was a result of constipation.
Asked by advocate depute Ian McSporran if she had ever seen another baby with red eyes from constipation, she answered “no”.
Health visitor Diane Mackie, 55, said: “The first thing I noticed was the baby’s eyes.
“They were red in the corners of both eyes. It just looked bloodshot.”
She told the court she had never seen a baby as young as Alexis with such red eyes.
Mrs Mackie said Alexis only put on 8oz of weight in three weeks, far less than the expected six to eight ounces expected every week.
Dr Linda Mackay, 37, told the court that the baby had suffered sub-conjunctival haemorrhages, a condition which causes the eyes to bleed.
Miss Sheach told health visitor Colleen Shaw, 44, that she moved out of her family home after a fight with her mother and moved in with Simpson shortly after the baby was born, the court heard.
“They had fallen out and she was living with her partner in Northfield,” Mrs Shaw said.
Simpson, whose address was given as 2 Dunbennan Road, Dyce, is also charged with breaching a court order against contacting Miss Sheach on various occasions between May 23, 2008, and December 8, 2008.
He denies the charges. The trial continues.

Baby Alexis Matheson's Aberdeen murder review report expected
18 September 2012
Last updated at 02:21 ET
The results of a review into the death of a six-week-old baby murdered in Aberdeen are due to be published later this week, BBC Scotland has learned.
Mark Simpson denied murdering his then-girlfriend's daughter Alexis Matheson by assaulting her in 2007.
A jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict at the High Court in Aberdeen in 2010 and Simpson was jailed for a minimum of 20 years.
The review was ordered in February last year, and the report is due on Friday.
The review has been headed up by Howard Llewellyn, the chief officer of Tayside community justice authority.
He has been reporting to the north east of Scotland child protection committee, having been asked to establish the facts about individual and agency contacts with the child to learn any lessons and make recommendations.
Simpson was found guilty in November 2010 of the murder of baby Alexis by shaking her to death, having denied murder by assaulting her between 18 November and 9 December 2007.
He had lived in Aberdeen with the baby's mother Ilona Sheach.
The Crown had urged the jury to convict Simpson for his "wicked recklessness".
However, the defence argued there was no sufficient corroborating evidence to say he even assaulted the baby.
Judge Lord Uist had told Simpson: "The pain and agony which baby Alexis must have suffered as a result of the injuries which you inflicted upon her are unthinkable."
He called for a fatal accident inquiry.

A YOUNG mum is planning to wed the man accused of killing her baby, a court was told yesterday.
Alison Wilson, 51, said her son Mark Simpson, 29 — who denies shaking six-week-old Alexis Matheson to death — and the tot’s mother Ilona Sheach, 21, were still in love.
She told the High Court in Aberdeen: “Mark and Ilona continue to have contact, they’re going to get married. He treated Alexis like she was his own. He loved her, she was part of the family.”
And Mrs Wilson broke down in tears as she revealed how binman Simpson, 29, was “physically sick” as Alexis lay in hospital with a fractured skull. The court heard how Simpson rang his mum in a panic on December 9 2007 after Alexis went floppy and her lips turned blue.
Mrs Wilson said when she got to Ilona and Simpson’s house in Aberdeen the baby was unconscious — and first aid-trained Simpson was giving her mouth to mouth as he spoke to emergency services.
She said: “I checked Alexis’s pulse and she didn’t have one.
“I gave Alexis two breaths of air and by that time I think I had given her two or three gentle compressions. I picked her up, wrapped her in a blanket and took her into the car.”
The court heard how they all drove to the city’s Royal Infirmary — where doctors asked if the baby had been dropped because she had a fractured skull.
Mrs Wilson claimed Simpson was sick, but Ilona was calm.
Mrs Wilson said: “Ilona said to the doctor, ‘you think I’ve done something’.
“Then she said, ‘take me to court’. I was thinking where on earth did that come from, her concern should have been for her baby.” Alexis died a day later at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.
The court was shown images of the three-bedroom home shared by Ilona and Simpson — who moved in just before the baby died, after he split with Ilona’s older sister Amanda Neish, 36, who was pregnant by him.

Mrs Wilson expressed concerns the baby had no crib but slept on a pillow in the living room next to Ilona and Simpson.
The couple chose to sleep on duvets on the floor so they could play computer games.
Alexis’s dad Robert McCall told how he’d only met his daughter twice — the second time when she was dying in hospital.
He said: “Alexis got christened at the hospital, then the doctors said there was nothing else they could do. I was really really upset.”
Simpson denies murder by shaking and seizing hold of Alexis and crushing her chest on various occasions. The trial continues.
