Mooresville man charged in child sexual assaults

Iredell County sheriff's investigators arrested and charged Byron Keith Waggoner of Mooresville in the sexual assaults of a 12-year-old girl.

Iredell County sheriff's investigators on Wednesday arrested a 41-year-old Mooresville man in the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl over a number of years, Sheriff Phil Redmond said.

Investigators charged Byron Keith Waggoner of Teeter Road with nine counts of felony first-degree sex offense and one count each of felony first-degree statutory rape and felony indecent liberties with a child.

Waggoner was in the Iredell County Detention Center this morning under an $800,000 secured bond.

He was taken into custody after investigators searched his home Wednesday and recovered numerous items of evidence, Redmond said.

The sheriff's office received a report of the assaults on Jan. 24 and then interviewed the girl and witnesses before obtaining search warrants, Redmond said.

MOORESVILLE, NC - A Mooresville man, charged on Feb. 2 with 11 charges stemming from an investigation into a reported sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl, is now facing more charges.

Byron Keith Waggoner, 41, of Teeter Road, Mooresville was charged with four counts of disseminating obscene material to a minor and one count of taking indecent liberties with a child. The earlier charges included nine counts of first-degree sex offense and one count each of first-degree statutory rape and indecent liberties.

These charges are the result of the continuing investigation into the first compliant, filed in January, said Iredell Sheriff Phil Redmond.

The girl told detectives that Waggoner, a family acquaintance, had sexually assaulted her over a period of years, Redmond said.

Detective Sgt. Brian Fink of the Special Victims Unit observed the interview with the girl, which was conducted at the Dove House Child Advocacy Center. As a result of that interview, as well as additional evidence collected from Waggoner’s residence, the additional charges were filed, Redmond said.

His bond on these charges was set at $200,000, which is in addition to the $800,000 bond that was set on the previous charges.
