Grandfather kidnapped grandson, may be armed say authorities
Authorities say an Ozark grandfather who allegedly kidnapped his grandson from Florida early Wednesday is believed to be armed and dangerous, and residents who come into contact with him should immediately call 911.
An Amber Alert was issued for 18-month-old Waylan Alexander Snipes of Chipley, Fla., after he was taken from his home around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Authorities said his grandfather, 36-year-old Ozark resident William Anthony “Tony” Snipes, was the subject of searches in Holmes and Washington counties in Florida and Ozark beginning early Wednesday. According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Snipes took baby Waylan from Chipley and fled from residents inside the home before driving away in a silver or gold Chevy S10 truck with Alabama license plate 26A55B8.
Andrea Gainey of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Snipes is considered “armed and dangerous” and that residents who come in contact with him or baby Waylan should dial 911 immediately.
Gainey said an extensive ground search was conducted by deputies and volunteers in Washington County and Holmes County, where Snipes is believed to have relatives.
Residents living in the Grimes Road area in Ozark, where officials said Snipes lived, said they did not know him nor had they seen any suspicious activity in the area.
Ozark Police Chief Tony Spivey said Snipes is familiar to the Ozark Police Department and that the Wiregrass Violent Crimes and Drug Task Force was involved in the search.
In addition to assistance by OPD, Washington County was assisted Wednesday by the Child Abduction Response Team in Florida and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Missing Chipley child found safe
May 12, 2011 12:57:00 PM
CHIPLEY — Less than 36 hours after an 18-month-old child was reported missing, the toddler is in safe custody and his abductor behind bars, authorities said Thursday.
Waylan Snipes was taken from his Chipley home by his grandfather, William Anthony “Tony” Snipes, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO).
A 911 call at 3:12 a.m. Wednesday alerted authorities to the abduction, and family in the house at 553 Second St. in Chipley pursued Snipes through a residential neighborhood, authorities said. But, investigators said Snipes escaped in a silver or gold Chevy S10.
Authorities initially believed Snipes was heading to his hometown of Ozark, Ala., but an extensive ground search was conducted around the home, as well, in case Snipes left the child behind, according to a WCSO release.
At about 12:15 a.m. Thursday, William Snipes was seen in the Nashville, Tenn., area, prompting an Amber Alert in that state.
About 10 hours later, an alert motorist who heard an Amber Alert on the radio recognized Snipes’ truck on Interstate 35 in Smiths Grove, Ky., a small town near Bowling Green, where Kentucky State Police eventually arrested Snipes. He is charged with kidnapping, interference with custody, burglary, convicted felon in possession of ammunition and a firearm, and possession of a short barrel shotgun, the WCSO release stated.
The missing child was found inside the vehicle in good condition and was taken into the care of Kentucky authorities.
Authorities have not released information as to why they believe Snipes kidnapped his grandson, nor have they disclosed why he was in Kentucky. Calls to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office were not returned Thursday evening.
The Chipley Police Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Washington County Child Abduction Response Team and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children assisted with the case.
Following is an earlier version of this story:
Thanks to an alert motorist and the Amber Alert program, 18-month-old Waylan Snipes is safe and in the hands of Kentucky State Authorities.
According the reports from the Chipley Police Department and Washington County Sheriff’s Office, William Anthony “Tony” Snipes, 36, of Ozark, Ala., was arrested today at approximately 10 a.m. in Smith’s Grove, Ky. and is being charged in the kidnapping of his grandson. In addition to abduction, Snipes is being charged with interference with custody, burglary, convicted felon in possession of ammunition, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a short barrel shotgun.
Washington County authorities said a motorist was driving on Interstate 35 in Warren County, Kentucky and recognized the suspects’ vehicle from an Amber Alert broadcast he had heard on the radio.
He then called the Kentucky State Police in Bowling Green. Kentucky State Police Troopers responded and were able to locate the vehicle. Waylan Snipes was also located in the vehicle, in good condition and is currently in the care of the Kentucky authorities at this time.
William Anthony Snipes was arrested at 10:35 a.m. and was booked in the Warren County Regional Jail.
