Mom accused of stabbing infant daughter

A Bakersfield mother is under arrest on charges she tried to kill her own baby.
Police were called to a house on Crawford Street in east Bakersfield Sunday evening. When they arrived, they found a six-week-old girl with multiple stab wounds on her upper body.
The baby's mother, 24-year-old Danielle Mailloux, was arrested and is due in court Tuesday on charges of attempted murder.
"Shocking and disturbing," said one neighbor.
"We don't have a motive at this point," said Ray Pruitt, Kern County Sheriff's Department. "The case is still under investigation."
Authorities believe Mailloux stabbed the infant multiple times with a kitchen knife.
"The stab wounds were primarily to the upper body," said Pruitt.
The Sheriff's Department wouldn't release the name of the child, but said she is in stable condition at Children's Hospital in Madera.
Investigators say there were other children at the house who are now staying with relatives. It's not the first time Mailloux has been investigated for crimes against children. Two years ago, she delivered a full-term baby that was stillborn. Tests showed the child died as a result of Mailloux's methamphetamine use and the coroner ruled the death a homicide.
Under California law, however, the mother of a fetus cannot be charged with murder if they solicited, aided, abetted, or consented the act that killed the unborn child.
Neighbors we talked to didn't know much about the couple, other than they often saw them hanging out in their front lawn.
"Always having nothing to do," said Robert Herrera. "I was always up and down coming from work and I would see them outside. Early in the morning, late at night, they would be outside."
"I'm shocked. I'm really shocked," said Cynthia Mancha. "I guess in this neighborhood it shouldn't faze me, but for a mother to do that I am really surprised."

A mother was sentenced Tuesday morning for stabbing her 6-week-old daughter numerous times.
The judge suspended an eight-year prison term for Danielle Mailloux, but he ordered her to spend the first nine months of her five-year probation in Kern County jail. She also received credit for the eight months she's already spent in jail, which means she'll earn her freedom in about a month.
Mailloux accepted a plea deal by admitting guilt for child abuse with an enhancement for great-bodily injury.
The mother's attorney says she was suffering from postpartum depression when she attacked her baby last May, but officers found Mailloux was also under the influence of methamphetamine.
The baby's father found the injured infant and called authorities. The girl was eventually taken to Children's Hospital Central California in Madera.
Eyewitness News obtained reports showing Mailloux was investigated in 2009 when she had a stillborn baby.
Bakersfield police were called at that time because of unusual circumstances surrounding the death, according to the Kern County coroner's office. Officers questioned both the mother and father, and the autopsy showed the infant died because of drug exposure through the womb.
The stillborn baby had methamphetamine in its system, but the Kern County District Attorney determined the death did not meet the legal definition of murder of a fetus.
Mailloux was never charged with that baby's death.

CA needs to change their laws. I thought if babies were born with drugs in their systems that mothers were charged with child abuse. I can't believe this mother got away with almost killing her baby. She should be serving at least 20 years! What an idiotic judicial system. They'll probably be giving her back that same inured baby. Unbelievable.

This POS got by with almost murdering her baby. The judge needs to be taken off the bench. What a crock.
