Bail hearing postponed for man charged in death of baby
May 20, 2011
Joseph Dumont's lawyer says his client is in shock, mourning the loss of his baby daughter.
Like yesterday, the 24-year-old was again in and out of the St. Jerome courtroom.
Dumont will be back for his bail hearing early next month.
It was postponed because his lawyer was just assigned the case and just received the evidence.
Dumont is charged with manslaughter and obstruction of justice in connection with the death of his daughter who was born just ten week ago.
She died in hospital of a brain hemorrhage , allegedly linked to shaken baby sydrome.
Dumont's lawyer will argue for bail for his client, seeing as he has no criminal record.
His lawyer also says he'll be calling Dumont's family in BC for bail money.
Dumont has been in Quebec for 3½ years, his 20 year old wife is from Quebec.
Youth protection officials are looking after the couple's other child, a 2½ year old daughter.

Infant shaken to death
'I told her goodbye before I could say hello'
May 20, 2011
Joseph Dumont
Little Mya was born this past March 11th. In photos posted on the Facebook site, she is seen sleeping peacefully in her bed, dressed in a striped vest, pink cheeks and clenched fists against her chest.
Barely 10 weeks later, her life ended in tragedy. Mya died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the Hôpital Sainte-Justine, Wednesday. She was allegedly shaken to death by her father, Joseph Dumont.
The young man, aged 24, was charged with manslaughter and obstructing police officers Thursday in the courthouse in St. Jerome. Dressed in a black shirt, he appeared in the prisoner's dock, cap "screwed" to his head. When the special constable removed it, his brown hair fell back on his face with childlike features.
At about 16:00 hrs, Tuesday, emergency services were called to intervene at a building on Vanier Street, near the high school St. Jerome. In apartment 10, they found the little Mya in cardiopulmonary arrest.
Relatives of the mother came to see her at the Sainte-Justine Hospital, Wednesday. The doctor made it clear that there was nothing left to do. "She had a brain hemorrhage, said the mother's sister, Céline Tremblay. The specialist found that she had been shaken. "Before dying, Mya's heart was donated."
"I told her goodbye before I could say hello," Mrs. Tremblay sorrowfully expressed, having seen her niece for the first time.
Apart from some bruising, X-rays taken at the Sainte-Justine Hospital found that the young victim suffered a broken elbow. The injury could date back for some time. "Last month, her parents took her to the Hotel-Dieu (St. Jerome) for a sore arm, said Celine Tremblay. They were told that there was no fracture and she had to do physiotherapy exercises. "

Since then, Mya had been crying in pain day and night. Céline Tremblay doesn't know if her niece had been misdiagnosed at the hospital or if her father had again hurt her. "She must have suffered martyrdom," said the aunt, who didn't know if Joseph Dumont could be violent. The young couple had told family that the incident with the arm was an "accident".
Dumont and his wife, aged 20, were discrete renters. They had another 2 year old daughter. Their immediate neighbor heard screams once, a month ago. Late at night the baby cried. "The father yelled:" Will you shut her the hell up! ", said the neighbor, who requested anonymity.
Tuesday night, the neighbors also heard noise from the apartment of the accused. "The police were with him in the apartment, said his immediate neighbor. He was in crisis. He shouted loudly in English. "Investigators arrested him the next day.
