The tone today in the Casey Anthony murder trial: subdued.
“After the all of the bombshells that were dropped during opening statements, so far today seems very tame in comparison,” WESH-Channel 2’s Amanda Ober said at noon.
Three former roommates of Anthony’s former boyfriend Tony Lazzaro testified. WFTV-Channel 9’s Steve Barrett highlighted testimony from one man. Cameron Campana said Anthony “had no reaction in the hours or days after the defense admits Caylee was dead,” Barrett said.
Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.
“Basically, what the state is attempting to do today is bring up everyone who has a relationship with Tony Lazzaro,” said Adam Longo of Central Florida News 13. The witnesses shared their memories of Anthony and Caylee.
Judge O.H. Eaton Jr., WESH’s legal analyst, said each witness had a bit to offer about Anthony. “They’ve got to build a house full of these bricks, and it takes each brick to build that house,” Eaton said of the prosecution approach.
WKMG-Channel 6 highlighted the defense questioning of Clint House, who said Anthony never neglected Caylee or treated the child as a burden. House said he would describe Anthony as a good mother.
WKMG legal analyst Mark O’Mara explored the defense theory that Anthony was sexually abused by her father and that caused her to shut down emotionally. “They’re going to say … she has this inability to emote for any reason whatsoever, even about something as horrific as her daughter’s death because of the abuse from the father,” O’Mara said.
WKMG’s Mike DeForest also highlighted Chief Judge Belvin Perry’s anger over lawyers not being prepared this morning. Perry threatened 35-minute lunch breaks and late hours if the preparation doesn’t improve.
“He is sincere about this: He is going to move this trial forward,” O’Mara said. “There have been two and a half years of preparation for this case, and he well knows it. And those attorneys, both prosecution and defense, better be ready for anything that happens.”
On News 13, Longo added a bit of color from the courtroom by revealing that something in the balcony got jurors’ attention this morning. Nancy Grace simply stood up and distracted jurors, Longo said. That was a bombshell today in court.
