Casey Anthony and Oprah Winfrey: Two ways of looking at world

Two very different world views received a lot of attention in the past few days.

There was Oprah Winfrey’s farewell on her daytime talk show. And there was Jose Baez’s opening statement in the Casey Anthony murder trial.

“This is not a murder case, this is not a manslaughter case,” Baez told the jury. “This is a tragic accident that happened to some very disturbed people, people with significant issues, unresolved issues.”

Baez hinted at secrets and dysfunction in the Anthony family. He later said that George Anthony had started touching Casey, his daughter, inappropriately when she was 8. Baez said the family’s secrets would come out during the trial.

Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee. After Caylee died, Baez said, Casey went into denial. He said she made up lies to get by.

Contrast Baez’s portraying Casey as a victim of her family with Winfrey’s parting words to her longtime viewers.

Winfrey made this point: ”You’re responsible for your life.”

And she added: “When you get that, everything changes.”

Love her or hate her, Oprah could be profound. Maybe the Anthonys needed to watch “The Oprah Winfrey Show” more often.

I especially thought of the Anthony case when Oprah said this: “Nobody but you is responsible for your life. It doesn’t matter what your mama did; it doesn’t matter what your daddy didn’t do. You are responsible for your life. … You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself, and you’re responsible for the energy that you bring to others.”

I always enjoyed the Winfrey shows with celebrities more than the ones where she lectured. But she earned the right to go out the way she wanted. The last show was a lecture, lovingly delivered. Take responsibility for your life — who can’t behind that message?
