Saturday's witnesses

Tony Lazzaro

When court ended Friday, prosecutors were trying to introduce a sexually charged online chat between Casey and her then-boyfriend. State prosecutors said the instant messages showed Casey considered her daughter, Caylee, to be a burden, keeping her from doing what she wanted.

But Judge Perry denied their request, saying the next logical question in that case would be "Why didn't Casey kill her parents?"

Those instant messages were not brought up first thing Saturday morning. Instead, the prosecution showed Lazzaro a crumpled up sheet from Full Sail University's student orientation. Lazzaro was a student at Full Sail while he was dating Casey in 2008.

On the Full Sail orientation sheet:
Lazzaro said the sheet, from his apartment, contained basic information on registering for classes. Also on the sheet was a handwritten note that said "Cameron," along with an address. Lazzaro said that was not his handwriting.

On seeing Casey on July 5, 2008:
He said while he was home in New York in the summer of 2008, he stayed in contact with Casey daily. When he returned on July 5, Casey picked him up from Orlando International Airport in Lazzaro's own Jeep. He said she was happy to see him. The two then went to Buffalo Wild Wings, where they met up with friends. Lazzaro said Casey then spent every night with him up until July 15.

On going to Blockbuster with Casey:
Prosecutor Frank George showed Lazzaro a receipt from Blockbuster Video, where he and Casey rented movies on June 16, 2008. That's the same day the defense said Caylee drowned in the Anthonys' swimming pool.

On the night Cindy Anthony came looking for Casey:
Lazzaro recalled watch the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, and playing Xbox with his friend, Nate. Casey was there, and had been all day. That night, he said Amy Huizenga came to the door, and she and Casey walked out with each other. A short time later, Lazzaro said the door flung open, and Casey Anthony ran inside as her mother, Cindy Anthony, came to the door. He invited Cindy inside, and she and Casey started yelling at each other. Lazzaro said Cindy and Casey then left, and he thought Casey was in trouble.

On deputies arriving at his apartment:
That same night, Lazzaro said he waited a while and then tried to call Casey, but then realized she left her phone at his apartment. So he called Amy Huizenga, instead. A short time later, he said an Orange County deputy arrived at his home to collect Casey's phone. Lazzaro gave it to him, and the deputy left, but came back again within the same hour. Lazzaro said he allowed the deputy to search his apartment. He said the deputy was there for about a half-hour, and did not take anything else.

On Lee Anthony arriving at his apartment:
Later that night, Lazzaro said Casey's brother showed up, concerned and looking for a bag of Casey's clothes and her laptop. Lazzaro gave both to him.

On texting Casey while she was in custody:
Frank George then showed Lazzaro copies of a text message conversation between him and Casey on July 16, 2008.

Casey: I'm sorry for not telling you what happened. We need to talk. Love you more than you know.

Lazzaro: Where is Caylee?

Casey: I honestly don't know.

Lazzaro: Why wouldn't you tell me? Why would you lie to me that she was fine w/ nanny?

Casey: I'm the dumbest person and the worst mother. I honestly hate myself. The most important thing is getting Caylee back, but I truly hope that you can forgive me. Granted I will never be able to forgive myself. No.

Lazzaro: Who is this Zanny the nanny person?

Casey: Someone I met thru a friend 4 yrs ago, used to be my buddy Jeff's nanny before she became mine.

Lazzaro: Where did you drop off Caylee last time you saw her?

Casey: At her apt. at bottom of stairs, at Sawgrass Apts. Have told and shown police apartment. Drove out there w/ 2 diff. officers, just got back from 2nd drive.

Casey: If they don't find her, guess who gets blamed and spends an eternity in jail.

Lazzaro: Was scared to admit it, scared something would happen to my baby.

Lazzaro told attorneys he felt angry and betrayed, and asked Casey, "How do you not know where your daughter is?" He said Casey replied, "I just don't." At that point, Lazzaro said he got frustrated and told her he had to go to class, and hung up the phone.

Defense attorney Jose Baez, however, had Lazzaro confirm that Casey's text suggested that Caylee was still alive, and that Lazzaro basically does not know how much he has heard was real, and how much was not.

On moving to Florida in 1989:
Casey's mother, on the witness stand for the first time during the trial, described moving to Florida from Ohio in 1989, when Lee and Casey were still very young. She said her parents had already retired to Central Florida at the time.

On finding out Casey was pregnant:
Cindy Anthony said Casey came to her work on June 30, 2005, and told her she was pregnant. Caylee was born just over a month later, on August 9. But Cindy mentioned Casey had problems with her periods in the past, and knew Casey suffered from bloating, and would look like she was pregnant.

On Caylee's bedroom:
Cindy burst into tears when prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick showed her a photo of Caylee's bed, adorned with a Winnie-the-Pooh blanket and pillow. She said they turned their computer room into a nursery for Caylee. However, Cindy said Caylee always spent the night in Casey's room, with an occasional nap in her own room.

On the layout of her home:
Drane Burdick showed Cindy several diagrams and photos of the Anthonys' home, and had Cindy mark three exit doors to the backyard. Each door had a lock on it. One photo, depicting Caylee's playhouse, made both Cindy and Casey start crying. Cindy said she bought the playhouse for Caylee's 2nd birthday.

About the pool in her backyard:
Cindy said she and George have had an above-ground pool in their backyard since 2002, before Caylee was born. The pool is 4 feet deep.

On life with Caylee:
She said before 2008, she had never gone 24 hours without seeing Caylee. Casey had always lived with her parents up until then.

On Father's Day, June 15, 2008:
Cindy said she went to visit her father at a nursing home in Mount Dora, and took Caylee with her. Also that day, she had lunch and went swimming with Caylee in their backyard pool. Cindy said they used a ladder to get into the pool, and Caylee could climb the steps, herself. She said Caylee wore a life jacket, and when they were done, she put the ladder up again. At one point, Cindy had to ask Judge Perry to have a photo of Caylee from Father's Day removed, because looking at it upset her. The judge allowed it.

On Casey's employment:
She said she believed Casey still worked at Universal Orlando Resort. Casey worked there before Caylee was born, and Cindy recalled seeing Casey's work badge and text messages from Casey's boss. In July 2008, Cindy said she went to Universal to talk to Casey about money issues. But when she went to guest services and asked about Casey, she found out Casey did not work there. When she called Casey, Cindy said Casey told her she was in Jacksonville.

On "Zanny the nanny":
Cindy told the prosecutor she believed Casey had hired a babysitter named Zanny. She said she never knew Zanny's full name before Caylee disappeared. She also said Casey told her Zanny had also watched the son of a co-worker at Universal, Jeffrey Hopkins. Cindy acknowledge she had never met Hopkins.

On searching for Zanny:
She admitted she had never attempted to look for or meet Zanny before July 15, 2008. Cindy also said she was still looking for Zanny as recently as "up until six weeks ago."

On the 31 days she had not seen Caylee:
Cindy said she talked to Casey every day during the time frame after she last saw Caylee. On June 16, 2008, Cindy said Casey told her she was going to spend the night at Zanny's, because she had to work early the following day. At one point, Cindy recalled wanting to talk to Caylee on the phone, because she missed her. Casey told her there was a car accident while she was following Zanny back from Tampa, but she said she and Caylee were fine, and not to panic. However, she recalled on the same day Casey told her she was in Tampa, George Anthony saw her at home in Orlando.

On Casey taking the gas cans:
Cindy recalled Casey telling her she returned George's gas cans on the same day George found the lock on his shed broken. Cindy said Casey told her she took the gas cans with her to Tampa.

On using MySpace to find Casey:
When Casey told her mother she was in Jacksonville, Cindy said she reached out to Lee to see if he knew where Casey really was. Cindy said she created a MySpace account to try and figure out where Casey was. She wrote that she felt betrayed, but Cindy admitted she did not know how MySpace worked at the time, and was not aware that anyone could see what she wrote to Casey. Judge Perry, however, would not allow the prosecution to enter Cindy's MySpace profile as evidence after the defense objected, saying its relevance to the case was questionable.
