Re: MARIANA CORONA - 1 Month - Morgan Hill (20 miles SE of San Jose) CA
When
Maribel Corona returned to her car after dashing inside a Morgan Hill
food bank on Tuesday, she discovered in horror that the Infinity with
her 1-month old baby inside was gone, sparking a frantic search that
ended with the pair reunited hours later."We believe it was a
crime of opportunity someone walked by, saw the keys and said to
themselves, 'Here is an opportunity for a joyride,'" Morgan Hill Police
Capt. Joe Sampson said.Tuesday's frightening episode began at
about 2 p.m. when Corona went to pick up food at St. Catherine's food
bank at 17400 Peak Ave. She pulled her car near the entrance, leaving
the keys inside and little Mariana buckled in the backseat, Sampson
said. She came out five minutes later, but the car was gone.Authorities immediately issued an Amber Alert. And
for the next three hours, helicopters hovered near the slopes of El
Toro peak in Morgan Hill searching for the vehicle while police tape
ringed the church's parking lot. The family, meanwhile, pleaded for the
carjacker to return the child. "We don't care who they are we have no questions, we just want her safe," said the child's grandfather, Miguel Corona, 47.With
the evening hours approaching, the search intensified. Then at about
5:30 p.m, someone called the California Highway Patrol to report the car
had been abandoned, with the child inside, near a Salinas park -- about
45 miles away. The child apparently was safe, but was taken to a local hospital.Authorities
were still searching for the car thief Tuesday evening while the
Coronas exhaled and hurried to reunite with baby Mariana. For Miguel Corona, the happy ending was an answer to his prayers. "This
is the best thing that ever happened in my life," said the grandfather,
with tears streaming down his face as he hugged family member. "I feel
very happy now."

Re: MARIANA CORONA - 1 Month - Morgan Hill (20 miles SE of San Jose) CA
New questions about an Amber Alert involving a
month old girl. Many of you want to know if the mother will be charged
for leaving Mariana Corona alone in a car with the keys in the
ignition. Wednesday night, another question, why did it take California
Highway Patrol several hours to send out text alerts, post to the web,
and get information on freeway billboards? So, we went to CHP
Headquarters in Salinas. The office wasn't in charge of Tuesday's
investigation, however, Officers there do know what it takes to get the
information out to you. The Center for Investigative Action worked to
find out what, if anything, went wrong in the search for little Mariana.
"Within 15 minutes to a half an hour, the
information is disseminated to Sacramento, to what we call ENTAC, which
is our state wide alert system," said Monterey County CHP Sgt. Carl
Churchfield.
Emergency
Notification and Tactical Alert Center, or entac, gets information from
any law enforcement agency and quickly takes action.
"Changeable
message signs on the freeways that are activated with information on
the vehicle, the child, etc. Anything that we can get out to the public
rapidly," said Sgt. Churchfield.
That includes text messages, social media and
highway billboards. But on Tuesday, Morgan Hill Police issued an Amber
Alert around 2:30 in the afternoon. It took almost 90 minutes for a
text message alert to get sent. One CHP Officer said there was a delay
in getting information to the public Tuesday, but he doesn't know why.
We called ENTAC, but nobody was available to talk because it was after
5pm. While information may have been slow Tuesday, a good samaritan did
find the baby unharmed and Sergeant Carl Churchfield called the
messaging program a success.
"The
question about anything that can go wrong, yes there are things that
could go wrong, but this system has worked tremendously over the past,"
said Sgt. Churchfield.

Police ID Suspects In Amber Alert Car Thief Case
5:33 pm PDT June 15, 2011
MORGAN HILL, Calif. -- Morgan Hill police identified two people of interest in the Amber Alert case that began in Morgan Hill last month, when a thief stole a car with a 1-month-old girl in the backseat, and ended in Salinas, when the thief ditched the car at Toro County Park off of Highway 68.
On Wednesday, police said they are looking for Maribel Mejia, 32, and Enrique Hernandez Rocha, who are both people of interest.
The duo was last seen in Chualar and Los Banos driving a blue 1988 Toyota Camry with the California license plate 2HJD721.

Morgan Hill and Salinas police teamed up with FBI agents to comb the stolen car, searching for DNA and dusting for fingerprints, to find the car thief or thieves. Until now, it appeared investigators had run into dead-end leads.Police said they would release more details on the two suspects on Thursday.
On Tuesday, the Santa Clara District Attorney's Office said it would not file charges against the mother who left her infant inside her car, with the motor still running, while she walked into at a Morgan Hill church on May 31.Maribel Corona, 24, of Morgan Hill, could have been charged with child neglect.
But Deputy District Attorney Steve Dick said based on evidence in police reports, it was "not appropriate" to file charges against Corona. He declined to elaborate on why no charges will be filed.
A statewide Amber Alert was issued after a thief jumped in the driver's seat and tore off with the Infinity, not realizing an infant was in the backseat,California Highway Patrol Officer Art Carbonel said.A hiker, Peggy Clancy of Salinas, found the baby, Mariana Corona Vidal, at Toro County Park and guarded her until CHP officers arrived. The baby girl was reunited with her grateful parents later that night.
