Mom arrested in boys’ shooting
An 11-year-old boy died and his 15-year-old brother was injured Friday following a shooting at a mobile home outside Clanton.
The boys’ mother, Ann Campbell, 34, of Clanton has been arrested and will face charges of murder and attempted murder. As of Friday afternoon, she was being held in the Chilton County Jail.
Ann Campbell has been charged with
murder and attempted murder.
The 11-year-old died after being transported via LifeSaver to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
The older boy was taken by ambulance to Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster. Sheriff Kevin Davis described that boy’s condition as stable.
Davis said a motive has not been determined and that the investigation is ongoing. Several investigators are still out in the field working the case Friday afternoon, Davis said.
The shootings happened in the 3,300th block of County Road 69 in the Enterprise community. County Road 69 is Baker Holly Road while in the city limits of Clanton.
A call concerning a shooting with injuries came into dispatchers at 10:02 a.m. Davis said he wasn’t certain who placed the 911 call.
LifeSaver landed in the parking lot of Zion Ridge Church of God on County Road 49, which is across the street from an Enterprise Fire and Rescue station.
Sheriff Kevin Davis addresses reporters during a
news conference Friday afternoon
in front of the Chilton County Jail.
Several law enforcement agencies, fire and rescue squads and ambulances responded to the shooting.
Davis held a 3 p.m. press conference to provide members of the media more information about the shooting. He said the case was heart-breaking and hard to understand.
“Our hearts are saddened … we all have kids at home,” Davis said. “We can’t quite grasp how this took place today.”
Davis said Campbell had been incarcerated at the Chilton County Jail before, but he didn’t elaborate on any previous charges. He said the boys’ father and step-mother had been contacted.
Campbell was arrested at the scene of the shooting without incident, according to authorities. She has at least one other child, a teenage daughter, Davis said.
On the Chilton County Sheriff Department website, Davis encouraged the public to pray for this family.
“Please pray for this family and all the other emergency personnel that has been impacted today,” Davis wrote on his department’s website.

Chilton County Sheriff's Office: Motive not clear in shooting of 2 boys
CHILTON COUNTY, Alabama -- Chilton County Sheriff Kevin Davis, speaking during a press conference this afternoon, said there is no known motive behind a shooting that left an 11-year-old boy dead and his 15-year-old brother in stable condition.
The boy's mother, Ann Marie Campbell, 34, of Clanton, has been charged with murder and attempted murder, Davis said.
Davis said he has never had to investigate a case of a mother accused of killing her own child. "Our hearts are saddened ... We all have kids," Davis said. "We can't grasp how this took place."
A statement on the sheriff's webpage provided an account of the incident:
Chilton County E911 Center at 10 a.m. received a call of a shooting in the 3000 block of County Road 69 near Clanton. Davis told reporters he did not know who placed the call.
The sheriff's office, Enterprise Fire & Rescue, and RPS Ambulance Service were dispatched to the scene and found the two injured children. Their names have not been released.
Campbell was still on the scene and was arrested without incident, the sheriff reported.
"It is with heavy heart that I have to report the following events that took place within our great county today," Davis wrote on the sheriff's office webpage. "Please pray for this family and all the other emergency personnel that has been impacted today."
Campbell has a daughter, Davis said, but it was not clear if she was present at the time of the shooting.
Davis said authorities have spoken to the boys' father and step-mother.
Campbell has been arrested before, but Davis said he did not know on what charge. A mugshot posted of her on the department's webpage bears the date Dec. 9, 2010.
A judge had ruled on Wednesday that Campbell was to be evicted from the property where the shooting occurred, according to court records.

Family of slain boy say Anne Campbell was great mother
PELL CITY - AL -
Alvin Davis of Pell City was last able to see the 11-year-old Michael alive and well just two weeks ago.
"Every time I pick him up, he just say 'Paw paw, I love you, Nanny, I love you.'"
And, boy, did this family love him, his sister, and his half-brother, Bailey.
"I just want to hug both of them and tell them.. what do you tell them," a confused and hurt Tonia Davis says. She is the boy's aunt, and his father's sister.
Anne Marie Campbell, the children's mother, is accused of killing Michael and trying to kill 15 year old, Bailey, Friday morning. It happened in Clanton. Investigators say Anne shot Michael multiple times and Bailey just once.
"Your mother is something you to go to protect you, to take care of you. not to take your life. How could anybody do that? Anybody," grandmother Becky Campbell asks.
Little Michael's family says Anne was a great mother. Her children were her world, but they say something changed two years ago, and they don't know why.
"I don't know if it was financial problems or whatever or when her father passed away or what," the grandmother speculates.
None of them ever thought it would come to this.
I don't know if she just snapped or you know. This was just totally unexpected," Tonia tells us.
They hope to bring the older brother Bailey and their 13-year-old sister to Pell City to live with them permanently. Michael will be buried in his grandmother's burial plot. We're told he was an organ donor. They say his eyes were the only organs still usable after his death and will help someone else to see.
