DENVER - The parents of a 3-month-old boy, who died Saturday morning, have been arrested and charged with child abuse.
Calvin Pitts, 28, and Amanda Deleon, 21, are being held at the Denver Jail.
Officers and Denver Health Medical Center paramedics were called to an
apartment in the 2600 block of South Federal Boulevard on Saturday at
7:55 a.m. on reports that a child at the home had stopped breathing.
The 3-month-old boy was taken to Swedish Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
"If we would have seen signs that any of them were depressed or
anything, we would have helped them. As a mother myself, I would have
helped her," said Jennifer Jones, a neighbor.
The cause of death has not been released by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.
"Obviously, most parents don't do anything like this and most kids grow
up to be just fine. So, unfortunately from time to time, we have to get
involved and investigate a case like this, and it's heartbreaking," Lt.
Matt Murray with the Denver Police Department said.
Neighbors of the couple say the two were generally quiet and kept to
themselves. Neighbor Jennifer Jones says they had only lived in the
complex for a few months, and she only talked with them in passing.
The Denver District Attorney's Office will review the case and determine what charges will be filed.
9NEWS has learned that both parents have extensive criminal records.
Deleon has been arrested for a variety of drug charges, shoplifting and
robbery. Pitts' record includes charges of sexual assault, carrying a
concealed weapon and a long list of drug charges.

Re: SANAI PITTS - 3 Months (6/2011) - Denver CO
The parents of 3-month-old Sanai
Deleon-Pitts have been charged with 1st Degree murder in the death of
their infant son, the Denver District Attorney's Office announced this
afternoon.
An autopsy report released today concluded Sanai died of died of
"complications of thermal and blunt force injuries from non-accidental
trauma," according to the district attorney's office.
Calvin Pitts, 28, and Amanda Deleon, 21, previously faced felony
child abuse charges for a litany of burns, fractures and abrasions
medical staff discovered while trying to resuscitate the boy, who died
June 11.
Among those injuries were 2nd or 3rd Degree burns on the child's leg.
Pitts told police that he microwaved a wet washcloth for
two minutes and applied it to Sanai's leg,
which medical staff discovered had been fractured, according to a search
warrant affidavit filed in Denver District Court.
A burn on the sole of Sanai's right foot happened when Pitts fell
asleep smoking a marijuana cigarette with the baby on his lap, according
to the affidavit.
The couple couldn't explain other injuries: an abrasion under Sanai's
chin, tears inside and around his ears, a wrist fracture, a possible
dislocated shoulder and a possible skull fracture.
"Ms. Deleon claimed she had never seen (Pitts) strike the victim. Ms.
Deleon did confirm that (Pitts) punched a hole in her bedroom door
after getting frustrated by the victim's crying," Denver Det. Ken Klaus
wrote in the affidavit.
The felony child abuse charges have been dropped and Pitts, who remained free on bond, has been taken into custody.

DENVER - The man charged with killing his 3-month-old son tells 9NEWS he didn't do it.
Calvin Pitts is being held at the Downtown Denver Jail on no bond. He's charged with first degree murder and child abuse resulting in death of his son Sanai Pitts this past summer.
Sanai's mom and Pitts' girlfriend Amanda Deleon is facing the same charges as Pitts.
Pitts spoke exclusively to 9NEWS Crime and Justice reporter Anastasiya Bolton Sunday.
In the interview, the 28-year-old told Bolton the Denver District Attorney and the State of Colorado have it wrong.
"In all honesty, I claim my innocence," Pitts said. "I never really hurt my son."
"Who hurt your son then?" Bolton asked. "I really don't know," he said.
Investigators say Calvin Pitt's and Amanda Deleon's son Sanai had extensive injuries.
The doctors who provided the treatment to the boy said he had two broken legs, a broken left wrist, a burn on the back of his left thigh, a scab on his chin from an unknown injury, an abrasion behind his right ear, and a tear inside his left ear.
Trauma, doctors said, that was not an accident.
"Did you notice any of those in the morning you put your son in the bouncer?" asked Bolton.
"Honestly, it wasn't noticeable to me. If I would've seen it, no matter the consequences, I would've taken him to the hospital," Pitts said.
Pitts told us he suspects Amanda's family members, two people who babysat his son, could be responsible.
"I believe it's because of my past record, it's the easiest way to pin it on. But they don't understand that a parent is not always the one who causes these," Pitts said. "I know the difference between right and wrong. I know some things that I do is wrong, but I would never stoop that low."
The 28-year-old said he loved his son and turned his life around for him.
"I ain't never seen myself living past the age of 30," Pitts said. From all the biz I had out on the streets. Just running the streets. When he came along, he made me change my whole life. I started going back to school and I started doing things that I should've done to change my life."
Pitts said he misses his son every day.
"I sit here and just wonder what life would be like," he said. "It's horrible to sit up here and think about not being able to have my first Christmas with him, or the first New Years with him. Never going to be able to do football. I love him. I love him to death and I would go to the furthest extent for him."
Denver police had this to say about Pitts statements: "Although we can't talk about the details of this case because it's been filed with the District Attorney, there was certainly enough evidence to arrest Mr. Pitts and then the DA felt there was enough evidence to charge him with the crime. However, we're always open to new information and are happy to review anything Mr. Pitts is willing to share with us. It is our desire to get the right person."
Denver District attorney's office couldn't comment on our interview and its content because of Pitts' upcoming trial later this spring.
