MAVERICK NICHOLS - 15 Months - Catoosa/ Tulsa OK
Catoosa police say the father of a fifteen month old in Catoosa has been arrested and booked into the Wagoner County Jail.
The
fifteen month old boy, Maverick Nichols, died at St. Francis Hospital
early Friday morning. Emergency room doctors reported to police that
there appeared to be severe injuries to the toddler's skull and blunt
trauma to his body. Catoosa police say the young couple tried to take
the boy to the hospital but got in a minor car accident and an ambulance
had to rush Maverick to the St. Francis ER. ER physicians concluded
the injuries were not consistent with a car accident.
The
toddler's dad, Mark Nichols, 21, was arrested Friday afternoon. The
Wagoner Co. district attorney tells FOX23 it appears Nichols might have
lost his temper while changing the child's diaper.
FOX23 has put in a request to DHS for any prior records of the Nichols family.

WAGONER, Okla. - The father and mother of a boy who died last week
from what investigators described as severe trauma have been charged,
court records show. Prosecutors in Wagoner County charged
21-year-old Mark Nichols with first degree murder Tuesday for the death
of his 15-month-old son on July 14. Detectives say the boy's
serious injuries, including blunt-force trauma to the head and body
sustained at the couple's Catoosa home, indicated child abuse. The boy's mother, 19-year-old Lacie Nichols, was charged with enabling child neglect and a warrant for her arrest was issued. Mark Nichols remains in custody at the Wagoner County jail and is scheduled to appear in court July 21.

Wagoner -
A plea of not guilty was entered for a Catoosa man accused in the death of his 15-month-old son last week.
Mark Christopher Nichols is charged in Wagoner County with first-degree
murder in the case. He was arrested following the death of his young
son, who was taken to the hospital on July 14th.
Hospital officials notified police that they suspected child abuse after doctors
said the boy showed signs of blunt trauma to his head and body --
inconsistent with statements made by the boy's parents.
The boy died early Friday morning.
In court Thursday, a judge entered a not guilty plea for Nichols and set his formal arraignment for July 27th.
Nichols' wife, Lacie, is also charged with felony enabling child abuse. Court
records show she is scheduled for arraignment Friday afternoon.

WAGONER - A Wagoner County jury has recommended a life sentence for a Catoosa man whom they convicted in the 2011 death of his 15-month-old son.
Mark Christopher Nichols, 22, was found guilty of first-degree murder by child abuse Thursday in the July 15, 2011, death of Mavric Nichols at a Catoosa residence, said Brian Kuester, the district attorney for Wagoner, Cherokee, Adair and Sequoyah counties.
The jury deliberated for about 2 1/2 hours, he said.
District Judge Darrell Shepherd scheduled Nichols' sentencing for Oct. 19, a spokeswoman said.
Prosecutors alleged that Nichols "willfully and maliciously" injured the boy "by use of unreasonable force," resulting in his death, documents state.
Mavric died of craniocerebral injuries resulting from blunt force trauma, according to an autopsy report.
The boy "had a complex skull fracture and brain trauma that was clearly inconsistent with an accident as described by the defendant," Kuester said Monday.
Police officers summoned by emergency room personnel July 14, 2011, to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa observed bruising on the head of the child, records show.
During transport to the hospital, the toddler was involved in a moderate velocity vehicle crash, but the child was found secured in his car seat after the accident, the autopsy report shows.
The boy's injuries were inconsistent with initial statements given to the responding officer and hospital room physicians, police said.
X-rays revealed skull fractures and internal bleeding, documents show.
Nichols told Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Agent Aungela Spurlock that the boy kept crawling away as he was trying to change his diaper.
During one instance, when the child was sitting up, Nichols yanked on the toddler's legs, causing his head to strike the floor, a probable cause affidavit alleges.
Reportedly concerned about the blow, Nichols immediately picked up the child, and, thinking he was fine, put him to bed, records indicate.
Nichols reportedly checked on the boy 20 minutes later and found him unresponsive, documents state.
