SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A preliminary autopsy report says a 6-year-old
San Antonio girl found dead in a large, old-fashioned microwave in the
backyard of her family's home died of suffocation.






The San Antonio Express-News reports the Bexar County medical
examiner's office reported the tentative cause of Rebecca Maria
Herrera's death Monday.

Police say the child was reported missing about 7 p.m. Saturday and
police, neighbors and volunteers searched for her before she was found
about 10 p.m. It wasn't immediately clear whose yard the microwave was
in.

Police believe the 3-foot-1, 37-pound girl climbed into the disused microwave and inadvertently trapped herself.

SAN ANTONIO — A 6-year-old girl missing for several hours was found
dead Saturday inside a large, old-fashioned microwave in the backyard of
a home in San Antonio, Texas.

Police believe the girl
climbed inside the microwave and became trapped. They said they are
investigating the case as an accidental sudden death.


The girl is being identified by
family members as Rebecca Maria Herrera and is said to be the daughter
of an officer for the San Antonio Police Bike Patrol.

After the girl was
reported missing, San Antonio police searched her home then took to the
streets with dozens of neighbors and volunteers helping to comb the
area.

The girl was discovered near 10 p.m. They released no more information about the case early Sunday.

... Stephanie Almendarez and her small daughter, who live across the street, held back tears as they watched investigators enter Rebecca's home. Her children would often play with the little girl, and her husband and sons had ridden their bicycles around the block earlier as part of the search team.
A mother of five, she could not imagine the family’s pain, Almendarez said.
“I heard somebody yell, ‘I found her,’ and then I heard crying,” she said. “I am shocked. I thought she was OK. I’ve never seen anything like this.”

BBQ fundraiser being held to help family of Rebecca Herrera

The San Antonio Police Officers Union is holding a BBQ fundraiser Thursday to raise money for the family of 6-year-old Rebecca Maria Herrera. Herrera died Saturday when she suffocated inside a microwave in her family's backyard. She was playing a game of hide-and-seek when she hid inside the appliance.

If you would like to help Herrera's family, stop by the police department's central substation, located at 401 South Frio Rd.

Volunteers are preparing $8 brisket plates all day long (until the brisket runs out).

Services for Herrera will begin today. A visitation is planned for Thursday at Porter Loring Mortuary from 10am on McCullough. The rosary will start at 7pm. Funeral services are set for Friday
