Baby vanishes after Detroit custody hearing brawl

Detroit Police are searching for a missing 4-month-old girl who disappeared during a custody hearing on Thursday.

A Wayne County Juvenile Court magistrate had just ruled that baby Evelyn Daniel should stay with her father, Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens said today.

On Monday, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office ruled the father had acted in self-defense when he shot his fiancé, 26-year-old Ebony Gaines, the baby's mother, at their home in Dearborn.

"The family started fighting with security guards; the child was slipped out the door," Stephens said about Evelyn at Thursday's court hearing. "We don’t know who she’s with. That’s why we’re investigating."

Stephens said no one is in custody in connection with the disappearance.

Police said they responded to a report of a shooting in the 1600 block of Highview Aug. 12 and found Gaines shot inside of the house. She was taken to Oakwood Hospital where she died.

Four-month-old girl disappears during emotional custody hearing in juvenile court

DETROIT, Mich (WXYZ) - A four-month-old girl is missing after she disappeared during an emotional custody hearing in Juvenile Court.

It was during that hearing that little’s Evelyn’s dad was given custody of the baby.

This is the latest chapter in a tragic story that started Friday in Dearborn when Damon Daniel and his girlfriend Ebony Gaines, the baby's mother, had an argument that ended with Damon shooting and killing Ebony.

Damon was arrested but released after the prosecutor ruled the shooting was self defense .

While he was in custody little Evelyn was with one of Ebony's relatives, Alethia Fenderson. Alethia says she brought Evelyn to court but things got out of control during the hearing.

Alethia says that while people were yelling and moving around the baby disappeared.

After Evelyn disappeared everyone thought a court officer took her out of the courtroom for safety. However, she hasn’t been seen since, and both sides say they don’t know what happened to her.

In fact, each side is saying they think someone on the other side has little Evelyn.

Detroit Police are investigating. Damon says he wants an Amber Alert issued, but so far that has not happened.
