No Amber Alert Issued for Mentally Disabled Teen
June 25, 2011 01:40 AM EDT
What is it with North Texas law enforcement not issuing Amber Alerts lately? First the Cooke County Sheriff didn't issue an Amber Alert on a missing boy for a week because they did not believe he was in danger. Now, a 15-year-old mentally disabled girl is missing. Police refused to issue an Amber Alert because she's considered a runaway.
The rationale here about this should leave you scratching your head. It stands to reason that if a 6-year-old runs away, law enforcement would naturally be right on top of it because it's obvious a child that young is incapable of making coherent decisions. Yet, here is a girl whose mental reasoning abilities is no better, and they've done little to find her.
Alejandra Gonzales has been gone for more than one week. Her family saw her packing a suitcase but believed her to be confused due to her mental abilities.
It's not uncommon for young children to pretend to go on trips and wild adventures and pack their bags for make-believe trips. Fantasy is a big part of life for a 6-year-old, and so you really can't blame the family for not taking it seriously. But now they're extremely worried and need help finding her.
Since the Fort Worth PD refuses to issue an Amber Alert, the Gonzales family needs all the help they can get.
Her family said she had a habit of going online and chatting with adult men, so it's possible she was lured away from home by a predator. She was last seen using public transit in Dallas.
Alejandra is petite, with long curly black hair. She stands at about 5'3" tall and weighs 125 pounds.
If you have any information about her whereabouts, please contact your local police department.

A desperate search for a 15-year-old special needs teen is over.
Alejandra Gonzalez was located at a DART station on Saturday after
disappearing Thursday following a visit to her grandparents in Fort
Worth.
Fort Worth police released a neighborhood alert about her disappearance on Friday.
The search for Alejandra included teachers and family members
passing out fliers at a DART station in Dallas and on every corner of
the neighborhood near College Avenue in Fort Worth where the teen had
last been seen.
A relative said Alejandra had been seen packing a bag at the
grandparents' home; later, relatives found an open window in the room
where she was sleeping.
"Even though she is 15, she has the mind of kindergartner," said
Alejandra's uncle, Francisco Melendez. "We don't know if she's in
danger."
Police told News 8 they were not aware that Alejandra was mentally
challenged, but the family said they provided that information to
officers the day they filed the report.
The department admitted there had been a miscommunication.

CARROLLTON — Family members of a missing 15-year-old started running
when they arrived at DART's North Carrollton Station on Saturday
afternoon.
Their 10-day search ended when they got a call from DART police officers, notifying them that the girl was in their custody.
"We found her!" said the girl's cousin, Stephanie Molina.
DART passengers Kathy and John Martin spotted the special needs
student on a Green Line train headed to Carrollton around 1:45 Saturday
afternoon.
"Thank God she's safe," said Mrs. Martin.
The couple recognized the girl after seeing her story broadcast on News 8.
"I looked at her and just had this gut instinct," said Kathy Martin
said. "I got back on the train to talk to her and she didn't get off. I
went back there and asked her, 'Can you smile for me?' And when she did,
I could tell that was her."
The teen had been missing since June 16. The family called police
after they couldn't find her at her grandmother's house in Fort Worth. A
relative saw the girl the night before she disappeared packing a small
bag.
The teen's teacher, Pauline Tatum, and her family launched their own
search days after filing the police report. They handed out fliers and
posted them in neighborhoods and at DART stations.
They focused their efforts at DART stations because the girl had
recently learned in school how to use public transportation. Their
efforts paid off.
"She found (the) flier on the post here herself as we were coming in here," Kathy Martin said.
Detectives have been combing the girl's computer for evidence. She
has some computer knowledge. They are also checking several leads and
tips.
They hope to take a look at video surveillance from a market in Plano where she apparently was seen with a man on Thursday.
Investigators from Carrollton and Fort Worth police are talking to
the girl to learn more about her whereabouts the past week and to
determine if anyone hurt her.
As for the family, they are glad their desperate search ended with tears of joy.
"It's unexplainable the feeling," Molina said. "It's just amazing. She's good. She's safe. That's all that matters."
