SAGE EMMA PENNINGTON - 6 Weeks - Ingram TX
INGRAM, Texas -- On Wednesday, a
preliminary homicide ruling was issued in the Sept. 21 death of 6
1/2-week-old Sage Emma Pennington, according to Ingram City Marshal
Rowan Zachry.Pending a final autopsy report from the Travis
County Medical Examiner, Zachry said initial findings are that the
baby's head suffered blunt force trauma.Zachry said it was the small Hill Country community's first suspected child abuse death since he became marshal 21 years ago.Zachry
said the case remains open. He said he will consult with a San Antonio
child abuse expert about what may have caused the baby's fatal injuries
and when they occurred. He said his investigators, with help from
the Kerr County Sheriff's Office, have interviewed everyone who may have
had contact with the child prior to her death.Until he has all the necessary evidence, Zachry said he will not charge anyone in what is now a capital murder case."If we arrest someone too early and we don't have everything right, that could cause us to lose the case later," Zachry said. The
baby's 16-year-old mother, Shelby Jones, said she and the infant's
17-year-old father tried driving their unresponsive child to the
hospital in Kerrville, until she began turning blue.Jones said
the father was on the phone with Kerr County EMS, so they pulled over on
the highway where they were met by an ambulance.Zachry said the baby was pronounced dead on arrival by the emergency room physician.
