A Reading couple
charged with neglecting their 4-year-old son so severely that he weighed
less than 20 pounds waived their hearings Friday.


Rick Postetter, 27, and Lindsay Coleman, 26, of the 300 block of West
Green Street, were returned to Berks County Prison following separate
appearances before District Judge Stuart D. Kennedy in Reading Central
Court.

Both are charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

County detectives charged the pair in late September following a child-abuse investigation.

Coleman surrendered to detectives Sept. 21 after District Judge Alvin B.
Robinson signed arrest warrants for the couple. Postetter already was
in prison for a parole violation.

Kennedy reduced Coleman's bail to $10,000. Postetter is ineligible for bail because he is jailed on a parole violation.

The investigation began after workers from Berks County Children and
Youth Services got a tip and went to the house, authorities said. When
they saw the condition of the boy, the CYS workers ordered the parents
to take him to the hospital, investigators said.

According to investigators:

Coleman and Postetter's son was admitted to Reading Hospital on July 14.

County detectives began investigating July 19 after receiving a referral from CYS.

Officials from the hospital said the boy weighed 19&1/2 pounds, and an
examination by a pediatrician showed he was a victim of child abuse and
neglect.

The child was diagnosed with malnutrition, medical neglect and related
ailments. He later was transferred to another hospital for
rehabilitation and is now under the care of child welfare officials.

Further information on his medical status was unavailable Friday.
