A woman who disappeared after an August murder surfaced Saturday to
collect her two-year-old son, then disappeared again, Salinas police
said.Maria Luna, 20, allegedly walked
into a relative's house, picked up her son, Jonathan Hernandez, and
neither has been seen since, the boy's father told police. Luna has been
missing since the Aug. 31 murder of Bryan Zamudio, 18. Police said she
is wanted for questioning in the murder as well as child concealment and
an out of area narcotics warrant.
The two year old had been in the custody of his father since the shooting, police said.
Luna disappeared after Zamudio was shot to death in a bathroom at Monterey
County Veteran's Memorial Park on East Laurel Drive, police said. A
witness reported seeing Luna's car fleeing the scene. Police recovered
the car in Watsonville, but Luna had disappeared.
Luna is not considered a threat to the boy but authorities do not know the
conditions in which he is living. Luna is preventing the father from
sharing custody, police said.
Luna was last seen with the boy fleeing from a west Salinas neighborhood in a
black Mitsubishi Galant driven by a female. Police urge anyone with

No New Leads in Search for Missing Salinas Boy

SALINAS, Calif. - On Tuesday night, there's a massive search for a missing two-year-old boy. But there's no Amber Alert. Salinas Police said a murder suspect snatched the boy and they could be headed to Mexico.

It started at the Veteran's Memorial Park when an 18-year-old was shot and killed in the bathroom two months ago. Police said Maria Luna's car was seen speeding away after the crime. They've been searching for her ever since. Now, they're on the hunt for her son.

Salinas Police described Luna's two-year-old son Jonathan Hernandez as an innocent boy, but he might be in with the wrong crowd.

"She's keeping the kind of company that would commit a homicide," says Sgt. Chris Lane of Salinas Police. "He's hanging around those people. It's not a place for any child to be. It's not a place for any child."

Even though Jonathan's family is desperate to get him back, they're too scared to go on camera. They spent the past three days searching for him because over the weekend Luna swept into town, grabbed her kid and then took off again. Now they're worried, they may never see Jonathan again. Luna spent the past two months in hiding after being linked to a murder.

"This case has gang-related overtones so they're fearful," says Sgt. Lane. "All they want is their son, grandson back."

Police started looking for Luna in August. In September, they found her car in Watsonville but not her. After Luna disappeared, Child Protective Services placed her son with his father.

Sgt. Lane said a statewide Amber Alert wasn't issued in this case, because Luna technically still has custody of Hernandez. Police said they reached out to Mexico border officials since they may be heading that way.
