The hunt for a 16-year-old Bedford County girl who police believe is
missing with a 47-year-old ex-sheriff’s deputy awaiting trial on
indecent liberties charges has spread to a wide area with police
“busting our tails” to find her, a state police captain said today.
Audrey
Marie McCombs, missing from her family’s home since Sunday at 9 p.m.,
may be in danger and in the company of Ernest Grubbs, a former Bedford
County deputy who had been assigned to Liberty High School until his
arrest and firing last month, police said.
“I’ve got a large crew
of men working on this and we’re trying to locate her working with
other agencies,” state police Capt. George Austin said. “We’re just
simply busting our tails, to put it bluntly.”
Austin said the girl’s family is extremely distraught.
“This girl just turned 16 last month and they’re cooperating fully with us,” Austin said.
Grubbs
was charged with a dozen counts of taking indecent liberties with a
child in a custodial relationship and is free on $5,000 bond.
Police
said he and the girl may be traveling in a gray 2004 Jeep Wrangler that
has a soft top and Virginia license plate XBK-8176.
Austin said the case doesn’t meet the criteria for an Amber Alert. He wouldn’t explain why.

This is very disturbing. He already knew he was in deep doo-doo because of the other charges against him.
I feel he's trying to go out in a "blaze of glory" by taking this teen and I dread to think of his plans.

State police
say someone called Monday saying they spotted E.W. Grubbs, the man
believed to be with missing Bedford County girl Audrey McCombs.
Officials say the two were not spotted together, and police are working to confirm if 16-year-old McCombs is with him.
Police think he may be driving a gray 2004 Jeep Wrangler with Virginia license plates XBK 8176.
State Police have added McCombs to the
Virginia Missing Children's Clearing House, so law enforcement anywhere
in the country can help find her. But they have not put out an Amber
Alert because they say this may not be an abduction.
If you have any information, call State Police immediately at 800-542-5959.

Runaway Bedford deputy caught with 16-year-old Audrey in Kentucky
Ernest Grubbs, the fired Bedford County sheriff's deputy who jumped
bail on morals charges, was caught today in Kentucky with 16-year-old
Audrey McCombs, state police said. Audrey was found safe and likely will
be reunited with her family in Bedford today.
Ernest Grubbs was having trouble with both his car and his debit card
before he was arrested early Wednesday on Interstate 64 in Kentucky,
according to a store owner.
Dwight Collins, owner of the Exit
181 Trav Mart in Carter County, said the former Bedford County sheriff's
deputy was buying gas at his store and had to come in to pay because of
an issue with his debit card.
Collins said Grubbs bought $40 worth of gas and nothing else. He said the transaction was time-stamped at 8:57 a.m.
"To be honest, he seemed like a nice guy," Collins said. "He went out and pumped his fuel, then his Jeep wouldn't start."
As
other customers were helping Grubbs start his vehicle, Collins got a
phone call from Virginia State Police investigators. He said they wanted
more information about which direction Grubbs was traveling.
Kentucky
state police said investigators had become aware that Grubbs used his
debit card at the gas station and wanted more information.
Collins said he told them Grubbs got on the westbound I-64 exit.
"I
saw somebody else in the Jeep. You could see it looked like a young boy
or young girl. Somebody with short hair," Collins recalled.
"We could've stopped him. We've got some healthy truck drivers in here," he added.
According
to Kentucky State Police Trooper Elliott Gollihue, Grubbs was pulled
over about 9:40 a.m. near mile marker 169 in Carter County.
Grubbs is now being held at the Carter County Detention Center, Gollihue
said. He believed the former deputy would go before a judge sometime
Thursday.

Grubbs, the fired Bedford County sheriff's deputy who jumped bail on
morals charges, was caught today in Kentucky with 16-year-old Audrey
McCombs, state police said.
Kentucky state troopers spotted
Grubbs' Jeep leaving a gas station in the town of Rush, a mountain town
just over the border with West Virginia and a few miles from Interstate
64. They followed the car on I-64 in an unmarked police car and stopped
it at 9:40 a.m. with a marked cruiser.
Audrey was in the SUV with Grubbs and safe, Virginia State Police Capt. George Austin said. Grubbs didn't resist.
"She's doing fine," Austin said.
She likely will be reunited with her family in Bedford today, Austin said.
Grubbs,
a 47-year-old Bedford County sheriff's deputy fired from his job as
Liberty's school resource officer when he was arrested last month, was
slapped with an additional charge of abduction and will be jailed in
Kentucky until authorities determine whether he'll waive his extradition
rights and return to Virginia.
Audrey, a Liberty High School sophomore, wasn't charged with any offenses.
Grubbs,
charged with a dozen counts of taking indecent liberties in a custodial
relationship, had been free on $5,000 bail until Monday. That's when a
Bedford County judge revoked the bond, saying Grubbs had left the
jurisdiction and had contact with the victim in his case.
Troopers added Audrey's name to Virginia's Missing Children
Clearinghouse and notified law enforcement agencies. They did not issue
an Amber Alert, designed to rapidly notify the public of a child facing
grave danger.
Audrey's family told police Monday morning they last saw her at 9 p.m. Sunday at home.
Grubbs
was arrested Oct. 19 after telling a state police investigator his
relationship with a 16-year-old Liberty student had "gone too far,"
according to a search warrant filed by police. Magistrate Robert Goad
released him on bond that night.
The girl's parents turned to the
police after her father received text messages from his daughter that
police said were intended for Grubbs. Police seized computer equipment,
photos, a bed comforter, handwritten notes and Grubbs' county-issued
phone from his home, according to warrants.
The girl told investigators she and Grubbs had sex numerous times.

The former Bedford County sheriff's deputy who jumped bail on morals
charges found himself back in police custody Wednesday, his getaway with
16-year-old Audrey McCombs stalled by a dead battery in his Jeep and
undone by a debit card that instantly told police where to find him.
Ernest
Grubbs, 47, was taken into custody without a fight about 9:40 a.m. by
Kentucky state troopers on Interstate 64 near the town of Rush, Virginia
State Police Capt. George Austin said at a news conference less than an
hour later. McCombs, a Liberty High School sophomore missing since
Sunday night, was with him.
"She's doing fine," Austin said. He said he believed she would be reunited with her family within the day.
Grubbs,
fired from his job as Liberty High School's resource officer last
month, was charged with a fresh count of abduction. He was held
Wednesday at the Carter County Detention Center in Kentucky as
authorities wait to see if he'll waive his extradition rights and return
to Virginia.
Grubbs had difficulties with both his vehicle and his debit card at a gas station in the half-hour before his arrest.
Dwight
Collins, who operates the Exit 181 Trav Mart in Rush, a mountain town
just beyond the border of West Virginia and a few miles from I-64, said a
gas pump card reader rejected the former deputy's debit card, forcing
him to come into the store to pay for $40 worth of fuel. That occurred
at 8:57 a.m., Collins said.
"To be honest, he seemed like a nice guy," Collins recalled. "He went out and pumped his fuel, then his Jeep wouldn't start."

Grubbs and the girl left Bedford County sometime late Sunday or early
Monday, investigators said. The pair were spotted Monday morning about
100 miles away in Lewisburg, W.Va.They rented a hotel room
there Monday night, Austin said. He said investigators confirmed the
Lewisburg sightings with surveillance video on Tuesday, but lost track
of Grubbs and McCombs until their gas stop Wednesday.
A Kentucky
state trooper in an unmarked car spotted Grubbs' Jeep soon after the gas
stop in Rush. The trooper followed the car west on I-64 until he was
joined by a cruiser, which stopped Grubbs' vehicle, Austin said.
Austin listened to the highway stop, over the phone, as it was happening.
"I
think my heart was pumping as bad as it has been at times when I was
making a felony arrest out of excitement and knowing she was going to be
OK," he said. "It was the best possible outcome."
It wasn't clear whether Grubbs was armed, Austin said.
Capt.
Mike Miller with the Bedford County Sheriff's Office cited personnel
restrictions and declined to say whether Grubbs had been stripped of his
county-issued firearms. That is standard procedure when a deputy is
terminated, Miller said.
As the capture unfolded in Kentucky,
former Liberty students who knew Grubbs during his seven years as a
resource officer spoke of shock of the charges against him.
Ashley
Wills, a 2010 Liberty graduate, said she and Grubbs became close
friends during her senior year. She said he became a mentor, encouraging
her to apply herself in classes and sports, and to go to church
regularly.
"This whole thing is crazy to me because he never gave
me the wrong impression," said Wills, now a student at Radford
University. "Not even once."
She also recalled that Grubbs sometimes took her out of class to speak with her, and went to softball games in which she played.
"When
I first heard that he was fired, I cried my eyes out," Wills said. "He
and I were so close that it made me feel like I was fooled."
During a summer camp this year, Wills said Grubbs once spoke to her about McCombs. He asked if they knew each other.
"All he said was that she was a cool girl, and I didn't think anything of it," Wills said.
Bedford
County school spokesman Ryan Edwards said in an email: "We are relieved
and excited to see this young lady safely returned to her family and
applaud the outstanding efforts of the state patrol and supporting law
enforcement agencies in this investigation."

Tom I thought the exact same thing. Maybe he had her hooked on drugs or was giving her lots of money. Who knows but she's a pretty girl and he's a dirty looking old man. I hope he goes to jail for a long time. What a pervert.
