GRADY CO., Okla. – -- A Grady County woman is facing felony charges of child abuse, according to court records.
An affidavit filed in Grady County claims 65-year-old Carol Schmidt abused three girls and two boys at her Verden home.
According to court documents, deputies began investigating Schmidt after a
15-year-old and a 13-year-old girl ran away from Schmidt's home and told
investigators they did not want to go back because they were scared of Schmidt.
Deputies observed marks on the young girls and notified the Department of Human Services.
Court records state Schmidt admitted to a DHS worker that she locked the boys
in their bedroom, admitted to pinching one and making another lick his own vomit.
Authorities removed the girls from the home, along with a 6-year-old girl and two boys, ages 7 and 9.Schmidt told authorities she had adopted the children in July 2007.
In interviews with the authorities, the children detailed several accounts of violence. One child told authorities Schmidt choked her and banged her head into another child’s head when she became upset.
The children also told investigators Schmidt locked the two boys in their
room at night and gave them a red five-gallon bucket to use as a toilet.
According to court documents, the children told investigators Schmidt would hold a
lighter underneath the 7-year-old boy's hand when he would not eat.
The children told authorities the boy had trouble swallowing food, which angered Schmidt. The
children said on one occasion, Schmidt slapped the young boy so hard he
fell out of his chair, then dragged him to the bathroom, where she
forced him into the tub and sprayed him with water, then made him sit on
the toilet all day.
The 14-year-old girl told authorities Schmidt became upset when the house appeared dirty and would slap or bang her head on the dryer or with a screwdriver, a kitchen spatula, a flip-flop or a fly swatter.

I'll bet she adoped them because the state agreed to pay her money every month until they all reach 18.
Hope they don't go easy on her because she is an elderly woman.

Verden woman accused of child abuse faces preliminary hearing today
September 12, 2012

VERDEN — A preliminary trial for a Verden woman accused of abusing her adopted children was held today in the Grady County Courthouse.
Carol Schmidt (65) allegedly put five children of varying ages through physical and mental harm.
She could face up to life in prison.
"We are seeking jail time and the kids will be here to testify," Grady County Assistant Attorney Leah Edwards said. "We will see if we can allow them to testify on closed circuit television."
Although multiple incidents are sited, Edwards said the prosecution rolled the charged into one count of child abuse by injury.
Despite her age Edwards said the crimes are gruesome enough to warrant jail time.
"Given the facts and the circumstances jail time seems fair," Edwards said.
Schmidt is accused of multiple criminal actions including grabbing a teenage girl by the inside of her mouth and pulling a young boy by his genitals.
If no plea bargain is reached Schmidt will most likely face trial in December.
