Search for missing Austin teen continues
A search continues today for an Austin teen who went missing from her
South Austin high school Friday, family and police officials said.
Jourdan Sarate, 18, has not been seen since early Friday afternoon
when she suddenly left her classes at Crockett High School, her mother
Monica Perez said.
Sarate suffers from bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia, and needs medication urgently, Perez, 44, said.
“We are hoping she is still in Austin,” Perez said. “She may be very
emotional, and panicking and we hope someone will notice her.”
On a cognitive level, Sarate (pronounced “Sa-raw-tee”) functions at the level of a 10-year-old, her mother said.
On Friday, the teen saw a school newspaper article about a fatal
auto-pedestrian crash on South First that claimed the lives of two teens
over the holiday break, Perez said. Sarate knew one of the teens from a
class, and became very emotional after hearing of their death, Perez
said.
Perez said Austin police are working to find Sarate. Perez’s
co-workers at Austin nonprofit LifeWorks are also visiting locations
where Sarate may go.
Sarate has been categorized as a missing person because she is an
adult and there is no concern at this time she was abducted, a police
official said. If Sarate were a minor and there was concern of foul
play, it would trigger an Amber Alert, the official said.
“We don’t suspect any foul play,” police spokeswoman Lisa Cortinas said.
