Knoxville girl charged with false report after Amber Alert cancelled
Posted February 29, 2012 at 4:36 p.m.
KNOXVILLE — A 12-year-old girl is charged with filing a false report after claiming a Knoxville teenager was abducted outside her home Tuesday night, resulting in an Amber Alert, according to authorities.
The girl, who was not identified, reported that she witnessed a man forcibly kidnap 14-year-old Taryn Lea Rollins from outside Rollins' Houstonia Drive home in North Knoxville at 8:45 p.m., according to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm.
The girl described the suspect as a balding white male, between 30-40 years old, who put the girl in the back seat of a small sedan with tinted windows and drove away toward Ridgecrest Avenue.
TBI received information that the girl had simply run away, and Rollins was found safe at an address near her home about 1:24 a.m., according to the Knoxville Police Department.
The 12-year-old was taken to juvenile detention and has since been released to the state Department of Children's Services.
A delinquency petition outlining the charges against her is in the process of being filed in Knox County Juvenile Court, Helm said.
A second juvenile also is expected to be charged with filing the false report, said KPD spokesman Darrell DeBusk. She has not been taken into custody
All three girls are related, said DeBusk, although he declined to elaborate.
Law enforcement also will be seeking restitution against the girls for the expense of the investigation.
This is the second time in Tennessee that an Amber Alert has resulted in charges against a juvenile for providing false information since the program began in 2002, Helm said.
More details they develop online and in Thursday's News Sentinel.
