Police say they arrested an Arizona woman Friday on
a first-degree murder charge involving the death of her 18-month-old
son, saying they believe she purposefully gave him a fatal dose of
methadone.

Twenty-one-year-old Donna Rose Smith also was arrested on a child abuse charge in her son Patrick’s death.
It’s unclear whether she has an attorney yet.

Oro
Valley police Lt. Kara Riley says that officers found Patrick
unresponsive in his home Feb. 5 and began trying to revive him.

He was pronounced dead at a local hospital soon after.

Riley
says that since then, police have been working with prosecutors and the
local medical examiner’s office and were able to make an arrest Friday.

She says Smith lived with Patrick in her parents’ home in the Tucson suburb of Oro Valley.

TUCSON, Ariz. - An Oro Valley woman accused of giving her
baby a fatal dose of methadone has had her bail reduced from
$75,000 cash to $10,000 cash or surety bond.

Pima County prosecutors say 21-year-old Donna Rose Smith is
facing first-degree murder and child abuse charges.

She's accused of killing her 18-month-old son by giving him a
synthetic opiate that's used to treat heroin addiction.

Smith's attorneys wanted her released on her own recognizance or
into the custody of pretrial services, but a judge denied that
Thursday.

The Arizona Daily Star says that if Smith
makes bail, she must live with her mother and submit to monitoring
by pretrial services. She also must participate in substance abuse
programs, refrain from drinking and have no unsupervised contact
with children under age 15.
