Toddler Girl (J.C.) Found Dead in Septic tank - 2 yo - Lakewood NJ

A New Jersey toddler who went missing from her home has been found dead in a nearby septic tank, authorities said. The 2-year-old girl, whose name was not released, was found shortly after 8 p.m. Monday, Lakewood police said.

The
discovery ended a roughly three-hour search by township police, an
Ocean County Sheriff's Department canine unit and a state police
helicopter.

It was not immediately known how the child got into
the septic tank or how long she was inside it. Authorities said the
girl's family had reported her missing around 4:50 p.m.

LAKEWOOD — A missing 2-year-old girl was found dead
Monday night in a septic tank in her backyard after a neighborhood
search that lasted more than two hours, police said.The
child had been playing in the yard of her East Spruce Street home with
her four siblings when she apparently fell down the hole into the septic
tank, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford.
The
child’s mother, Marina Matias, called police at 4:49 p.m. to report
that her 2-year-old child was missing, Ford said. The child had been
reported missing for about 20 minutes before police were called, police
said.
The child, identified only as J.C., was found in the tank behind her home between New Hampshire and Albert avenues, police said.
“The
search teams found a small, approximately 3-foot wide hole in the yard,
apparently to a septic tank,’’ Ford said in a prepared release.
“My
heart goes out to that family and that child,’’ said Donna Snead, whose
home faces the Matias residence. “It’s a peaceful neighborhood here and
when the police told me they were searching for the little girl, I went
up to my room and prayed for her. Two hours later, they said they found
her in the back yard in the tank.’’
Snead said she wants to start a collection for the family and would ask neighborhood residents to donate.
“I can’t imagine what that mother is going through right now,’’ she said.
Ford said the township Public Works Department pumped out the tank.
At
approximately 7:30 p.m., the water level had been dropped and police
and emergency personnel saw the child’s body in the tank, she said
Authorities were able to remove the body at about 10:30 p.m. and the girl was pronounced dead at 10:33 p.m.
“The family has been informed and is understandably distraught over this turn of events,” the prosecutor said.
“We all join in expressing our deep condolences to the family of this child,’’ Ford said.
The
investigation of this death will be conducted by the Ocean County
Prosecutor’s Office, lead investigator Detective Sgt. Carlos
Trujillotovar, and the Lakewood Township Police Department.

search involved local police, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department K-9
unit, and a State Police helicopter, police said. Dr. Neil Brodsky of
the county Medical Examiner’s Office also responded to the scene.

I just don't know. Why would a little tiny 2 year old be unsupervised? Did she really "fall through" the septic tank? I'm always suspicious when a baby who should have been under adult supervision meets her death.

Even if it is determined to be an accident, there is still the question of WHY SHE WAS UNSUPERVISED.

I would be intensely questioning the other children in the yard. Without prejudice to this case, it would seem to be a plausible way for a murder cover up. Fluid contents of the lungs, if any, will tell the real story.

LAKEWOOD — The death of a 2-year-old girl found in a septic tank has been ruled an accidental drowning, following an autopsy Tuesday.An
autopsy conducted on Marina Matias’ daughter, identified only as J.C.,
showed there was no indication of foul play or trauma when she drowned
in the septic tank behind her home at 1467 E. Spruce St. Monday night,
according to Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford.
“The
Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office will continue its investigation into
the circumstances of this death in order to rule out any criminal action
that contributed to the death of this young child,” Ford said.
She said Dr. Ian Hood of the Medical Examiner’s Office positively identified the child as J.C.
