A
39-year-old Arizona man was arrested on Friday on suspicion
of physically abusing a 3-year-old child, Coconino sheriff's deputies
said.
James Boling, of Valle, was booked
into the Coconino County Detention Facility on two counts of aggravated
assault and four counts of child abuse.
The
911 call came in at about 1:45 p.m. for a boy who was breathing but
unresponsive. The caller said the child was in the employee housing for
the Grand Canyon Quality Inn and Chevron. The housing unit is located in
Valle, south of Tusayan.
High Country
Fire medical personnel were the first responders to arrive. They
reported that the child had suffered a black eye, severe facial bruising
and extensive bruising on the rest of his body. The child was flown to
the Flagstaff Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. He is reported
to be in stable condition.
During their
investigation, deputies and detectives said they learned that Boling
lives in Valle with the victim and the victim's 34-year-old biological
mother. During an initial interview, Boling said he was left to care for
the child while the child's mother was at work. Deputies said he gave
"an accidental excuse as to how the child was injured."
Boling is being held on a $250,000 cash bond.
