COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A Fort Carson soldier has been charged with murder following the death of a toddler last year.
Reports said Pfc. James A. Price, the child's uncle, was charged on January 24,
and is scheduled to appear at a hearing later this month.
Officials with the Mountain Post said the toddler suffered blunt force trauma
to the head at Fort Carson in early November.

Army officials suspect a Fort Carson soldier killed a 2-year-old
during an incident in early November, Fort Carson revealed this week.

Prosecutors charged Pfc. James A. Price, the toddler’s uncle with
murder in connection with the death, according to a charge sheet filed
Jan. 24. Price was assigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort
Carson and is scheduled to appear for a hearing in the case later this
month.

Lt. Col. Steve Wollman, a Fort Carson spokesman, declined to say why
the post did not previously release details about the death.

“No response,” Wollman wrote in an email to the Gazette.

Wollman said the Army is not required to notify the public of killings on the post.

Wollman declined to release the name of the toddler and the date that the 2-year-old died.

Local child abuse deaths spiked in 2011, when 10 children were killed
in El Paso County — three of them over a two-week span in December in
Colorado Springs.

“It’s not a record but it’s enough to be alarming,” said El Paso County Commissioner Sallie Clark.

The deaths led local child advocates and officials with the post, the
county and the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office to convene a
group called Not One More Child to find links between the deaths and
expand outreach to stressed families. Most of the children were under
the age of two, and many lived in young families with ties to the military.

The latest publicly-known charges stem from an incident on Nov. 5,
2011 on Fort Carson that left the toddler with blunt force trauma to the
head, according to a charge sheet and comments by Wollman.

The case against Price will be aired at a May 15 evidence hearing.
After that hearing, an officer will issue a recommendation on whether
the case should proceed to court-martial. Fort Carson’s commander, Maj.
Gen. Joe Anderson, will make the final decision on whether Price will face court-martial.

If convicted in the killing, Price would face a maximum penalty of life behind bars.

Price served in the National Guard from October 2008 through February 2010, according to Army Human Resources Command.

He trained for four months in Fort Lee, Va., before arriving at Fort Carson as a food service specialist. He never saw combat.

Price was not arrested in connection with the death, Wollman said,
and he is not jailed. He was charged on the same day that another Fort
Carson soldier was charged with murder in a separate case.

Sgt. Vincinte Jackson is suspected of killing Spc. Brandy Fonteneaux
in a barracks on the post sometime between Jan. 6 and Jan. 8. Jackson
also is slated to appear for a court hearing this month.
