Toledo police, family search for missing woman

Published: 5/30/2012
Toledo police are looking for a woman who has been missing from her family’s home in the Old West End for five days.
Jennifer Clark, 22, is 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs 119 pounds. She was last seen wearing all-white clothing — either a short-sleeve white T-shirt or a light-weight long-sleeve hooded sweatshirt — capri pants, and tennis shoes.
Ms. Clark’s mother, Amelia Clark, a newspaper carrier for The Blade who also works for ProMedica, said she believes her daughter is trying to get to Dearborn, Mich.
“She wrote a little letter to herself and mentioned something about the Dearborn, Michigan, area,” Mrs. Clark said.
Mrs. Clark said her daughter and three of her other children were sleeping in a tent set up in the backyard of their Scottwood Avenue property.
Her children told her they went to sleep at about 2:30 a.m., and when one of the girls woke up at about 8 a.m. and went into the house, she realized Ms. Clark was nowhere to be found.
Mrs. Clark said her daughter, who suffers from episodes of psychosis, does not have any boyfriends or friends because of her medical condition.
The psychosis, the mother said, might have been triggered by an attack at the Greenbelt Apartments on Cherry Street on Christmas Day, 2010, when the family was delivering newspapers.
Prior to the attack, Mrs. Clark said her daughter was “normal,” a happy kid who was very smart and planned on becoming a veterinarian.
Six months after the assault, during a family trip to Lake Erie, Ms. Clark became “deathly ill” and her family rushed her to an intensive care unit.
Her mother said that the woman was comatose for 10 days.
“She never really came out of that illness,” Mrs. Clark said.
She reported that her daughter had been doing much better recently, but Friday night, just before her family realized she was gone, Ms. Clark was “smiling too much” which made Mrs. Clark think she was going into psychosis, which doesn’t allow her to rationalize thoughts and actions.
Mrs. Clark said she has reached out to officials in Michigan and planned today to speak to park rangers in the Toledo area, before she and her other six children go out to look for the young woman.
She’s hoping that other people will do the same.
“I just want people to look in their, if they have little forests or wooded areas, somewhere where someone isn’t visibly seen,” Mrs. Clark said through tears. “I think Jennifer is probably really weak.”
She said her daughter is not dangerous and will talk to someone if approached, but worries because “she can be preyed upon very easily.”
Anyone who sees the missing woman is asked to call Toledo police at 419-245-3142 or 419-245-3340.
