BROOKLEY LOUKS -19 yo (2002) - Greenwood IN
After Jill Behrman, but before Lauren Spierer, there was the case of
Brookley Louks. She was a 19-year-old Greenwood woman who disappeared
ten years ago Sunday, and has never been found.
"I just remember my best friend Erica and I driving everywhere and we couldn't find anything," recalls Mista, Brookley's sister.
It
took about a week before Brookley's car was found at Highway 37 and
State Road 144. That is where a neighbor picked up Joe Nowicki, out of
breath and frazzled, the night Brookley disappeared.
"He always seemed a little over protective of her, but at
the time I didn't think anything about it. But now I look back and I'm
like ... huh," says Mista.Police searched Nowicki's home and
garage after Brookley's disappearance. Investigators found evidence of
her blood. They found it on the floor, on a desk and splattered on the
ceiling. Joe Nowicki admitted it was Brookley’s blood, claiming she cut
her finger while working on an upholstery project.
Greenwood Assistant Police Chief, Matt Fillenwarth says
Nowicki was nothing but a murderer, rapist and sociopath. "I asked him,
'What do you think happened to this girl?' And he just stopped and
looked me dead in the eye and said, 'Well detective, I think she met
with an ill fate,'" recalls Fillenwarth.
Brookely's father, Scott
Louks, purchased pills from Nowicki and owed him money. Greenwood police
had to go to court to get an order to force Scott to talk with them
about his daughter's disappearance. He didn't tell them much, and by
November of that year, he was dead.
Nowicki eventually went to
federal prison for a gun violation. He died a couple years later. He
wouldn't tell the cops anything either.
His statement at the time
was, 'You'd like me to tell you I did it. You'd like me to tell you
where she's at," recalls Fillenwarth. "Then he kinda smiled and he said,
'I could do that, but I'm not because it's the little bit of fun I have
left.'"
It didn't take Mista long after that day ten years ago to accept Brookley was never coming back.
"On
her birthday last year, someone put flowers up on a fence post where
her car was found just because there's no place for her," she begins. "I
want that. Her friends want that. The rest of the family wants that."
Brookley Louks deserves better than that.
Mista
thinks other young people who hung around Joe Nowicki, dealing drugs
back then know what happened to Brookley. If you have any information
about the disappearance of Brookley Louks, you are asked to call
Greenwood police at 887-5210.
