Destinee Fields: Teen girl found safe at TV station
(Osceola County Sheriff's…)
2:44 p.m. EST, July 31, 2012|By Arelis R. Hernández and Susan Jacobson, Orlando Sentinel
The Osceola County Sheriff's Office has located a missing 16-year-old girl in good health and arrested her male companion.
Destinee was found at the Telemundo television studios Tuesday in Orlando conducting an interview alongside a male friend, Rony Rijo-Carty, 21.
He was taken into custody and is facing charges of interfering with child custody, officials said.
Destinee had seen missing-person reports about herself on television
and went to Telemundo to conduct an interview so everyone would know she
was OK, according to Osceola County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Twis
Lizasuain.
The station called the Florida Department of Children
and Families, which in turn contacted the Osceola County Sheriff's
Office, Lizasuain said.
Destinee was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children
as a precaution. She spent more than two weeks without her medication
that she regularly takes because of a liver transplant she received in
2007, Lizasuain said.
Lizasuain said detectives interviewed
Rijo-Carty early in their investigation but he did not notify them when
he made contact with Destinee.
The girl had been missing since
July 19 after she took the bus to Gateway High School from her foster
home. She had a history of running away.
The girl is currently in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families, Lizasuain said
