MOUNT VERNON — Police said this morning they continue to search for a 13-year-old boy who has been missing for more than a week, despite reporting earlier that he had been found.
Investigators are looking for Jarod Harris, a Longfellow Middle School student who will start eighth grade in the fall and has not been seen at his home near the Pelham border since the afternoon of Aug. 3.
Police initially reported this morning that Jarod had been found safe and was at a hospital, but Sgt. Daniel Godshall said a 14-year-old girl had been found, instead. He declined to identify the girl, but said she had only been missing a short time.
Jarod’s mother Sharon Harris said this morning that she will continue driving around looking for him, reaching out to his friends for information and posting fliers offering a reward in the case.
“I don’t think he left Mount Vernon,” she said. “Mount Vernon is all he knows.”
She’s had difficulty since he’s been missing and is pleading with police to do everything they can.
“It’s hard to sleep,” she said. “I’m concerned. I don’t know what’s going on. It’s very difficult. This is so out of the norm for him to just not return.”
Jarod is about 5-foot-3 and 110 pounds, with a slim build and short hair. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, basketball shorts and black high-top sneakers.
Anyone with information may call the city Police Department at 914-665-2500.

MOUNT VERNON — A 13-year-old Mount Vernon boy who had been the object of a weeklong citywide search was found late last night.
Police Chief John Roland said this morning that several people spotted Jarod Harris near 25 W. Sanford Blvd. and called authorities. Police picked up the boy, notified his legal guardian and, Roland said, turned him over to Westchester County Youth Services.
“He was fine,” Roland said. “He was a runaway. He wasn’t missing.”
Harris’ mother, Sharon, reported him missing after he failed to come home in the afternoon of Aug. 3.
Sharon Harris could not be immediately reached. On Sunday, she had said she worried her son had fallen in with the wrong crowd.
“He had these new friends he was hanging out with and was so secretive about them,” she said.
