AMBER Alert issued for missing NC child

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Officials with the State Law Enforcement Division have issued an AMBER Alert for a missing child from North Carolina.

According to SLED, 12-year-old Abigail Faith Lefevers was last seen on McNeil Road in Newport, North Carolina.

Lefevers is described as 5'4" tall and weighing 90 pounds with brown shoulder-length hair.

Deputies say Lefevers disappeared from her father's home sometime between 10 p.m. Sunday and 6:30 a.m. Monday.


SLED investigators are also seeking 38-year-old Timothy Howard
Newman. The National Sex Offender Registry has identified Newman as a
registered sex offender.

Newman was released from prison last year after spending more than
six years behind bars for three counts of sex offenses by a substitute
parent or guardian.

Investigators say Newman has been talking to Lefevers for the last
few weeks, but it's unclear right now how they communicated and how
Newman was able to take the young girl.

Newman was last seen by his roommate last night and did not show up for work this morning.

SLED says they believe the pair is traveling in a 1998 red Chrysler
Sebring with the North Carolina license plate number AKT 6534. The
vehicle was last seen going southbound on Highway 17.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a sex offender formerly convicted
in Stokes County who is now suspected of abducting a 12-year-old in
Carteret County.




Timothy Newman, 38, is suspected of abducting Abigale Faith Lefevers.
She was reported missing Monday morning, and an Amber Alert was issued
later that day.


On Tuesday, Carteret County deputies issued a warrant against Newman on a charge of child abduction, WITN reported. Investigators say Lefevers had been communicating with Newman in recent weeks.


Abigale is about 5'4" tall, weighs 90 pounds and has brown hair and
brown eyes. She was last seen wearing black Nike shoes and carrying a
pink backpack with peace signs on it.


Abigale may be traveling in a red 1998 Chrysler Sebring with North
Carolina license plate AKT-6534. The vehicle was last seen going south
on U.S. 17 near the South Carolina border.


Authorities believe he might be hanging around marinas near Myrtle Beach
or elsewhere along the South Carolina coast. Authorities say Newman is
familiar with the Atlantic coast because his father was a large boat
captain.

Investigators say Newman also was a truck driver and may be using back roads to avoid police.


As of Tuesday, the Amber Alert had been extended to all Southern states, and the FBI became involved in the case, WITN reported.


Newman, of Newport, N.C., stands 5'8" tall and weighs 210 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.


Newman is a registered sex offender who was convicted in Stokes County
in 2004. Newman spent more than six years in prison for three counts of
sex offenses by a substitute parent or custodian. He was released from
prison in March 2011.


Abigale's father, Robert, said he has met Newman in the past. Robert had
a direct message for Abigale during an interview with WITN.


"If you're out there watching me right now, baby, please just come home.
Daddy's not mad. We can work through anything that this is. Just please
come home."

North and South Carolina Amber Alert Canceled for 12 Year Old Girl

The Amber Alert was canceled Wednesday afternoon (09-26) after the child
was found safe in South Florida. The girl and the suspect we located by
Hallandale Beach Police and the suspect was taken into custody.


The States of South and North Carolina issued the Amber Alert Monday
(09-24) after the girl was abducted in Newport, North Carolina. The
suspect is a registered sex offender.



Abigail Faith Lefevers a white female 12 years old, with brown hair and green eyes, 5'4" tall and weighs 90 pounds. Her hair is shoulder length.



The suspect is Timothy Howard Newman, a white male, 38 years old, with brown eyes, short brown hair, 5'8" tall and 210 pounds.


The suspect vehicle is a1998 Red Chrysler Sebring with North Carolina tag # AKT6534.
