The mother of a 4-year-old boy is considered a person of interest in his homicide.
October 1, 2012
A 4-year-old boy who lived at a condo complex on 1035 E. Boston Post Rd. in the Village of Mamaroneck was confirmed dead Monday morning, after police responded to a 911 call about the well-being of the boy’s mother.
Upon entering the apartment at 10:30 a.m. today after being let in by a relative, police found the dead child in a bedroom along with his 46-year-old mother, who was in a semi-conscious state, according to village police. The mother was taken to the hospital for evaluation and is expected to recover.
According to Mayor Norm Rosenblum, the mother is being treated as a “person of interest” in the case, which is being actively investigated by the VOMPD. No charges have yet been filed in connection with the incident.
“Any homicide is bad…it’s particularly magnified when it’s a little kid,” said Rosenblum.

Investigation Continues into Child's Death; Mother Held Without Bail
The Mamaroneck mother of deceased four-year-old Jason Reich has been charged with murder.
October 2, 2012
MAMARONECK, NY — Police are continuing to investigate the death of four-year-old Jason Reish, who was found dead in his mother's apartment in the Village of Mamaroneck Monday morning.
The child's mother, 46-year-old Manuela Maria Morgado, has been charged with second degree murder,
a felony, in connection with her son's death. Morgado was found at the
crime scene semi-concious, according to police. Authorities have
reported the incident as a murder-suicide.
Calls to Timothy Reish, the boy's father, went unanswered Tuesday
morning. A child's voice—possibly Jason's—can be heard on the answering
machine.
"You've reached the Reishes, please leave a message," he says.
Timothy and Morgado were locked in a custody battle. Timothy is an orthopedic surgeon living in Briarcliff Manor.
The boy was found dead in his mother's apartment at Continental View
Condominium Complex on East Boston Post Road in the Village of
Mamaroneck. A makeshift memorial of flowers now sits outside the complex.
Jason was enrolled at JW Tumbles,
a children's gymnasium on Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck. The owner
declined comment Tuesday, but said the business will do something to
remember Jason.
Morgado was arraigned in village court Monday and was remanded to
Westchester County Jail without bail; she is due back in court on Oct.
4, said a statement from VOM Police.

Laid to Rest: Community Mourns Murdered Child
Mourners filled the pews at the Scarborough Presbyterian Church in Briarcliff Manor to honor Jason 'Jake' Reish.
October 5, 2012
“I don’t think it gets any darker than this,” said Rev. Dr. Tim Ives,
as he addressed family and friends in the hallowed room who were
gathered to mourn a 4-year-old boy whose short life was best remembered by his innocence and big smile.
Quoting Matthew 18:4, he spoke about Jesus’ special relationship with
children, his welcoming of them into the Kingdom of Heaven.
“Each of us is filled with hope that this is not the end,” he said.
Jason “Jake” Reish’s father, Dr. Tim Reish, his aunt Sara Reish
Desmond, uncle Matthew Reish and family friend Jeff Manganello all spoke
of the immensity of Jake’s loss.
“We’ll have a special place in our hearts for this boy we love so dearly,” said Matthew.
But for the father that would never hold teach his son to shave or
fish, the words describing his feelings would be more difficult to
articulate.
“I revised this about 17 times so I could adequately express my family’s feelings for that little boy,” he said.
As an orthopedic surgeon who helps heal and mend broken bones, Tim realized he was powerless in the face of tragedy.
“This injury is, unfortunately, not fixable,” he said.
As Tim described a dream he recently had where his son was standing
outside a gate calling for him, his voice became choked with emotion.
“This is a wound that will never heal… There will be a permanent hole
in our hearts and souls that will never be filled,” he said.
Following the mass, mourners silently filed out of the church into the blinding sunlight.

Morgado still awaiting trial in son’s murder
Dec 19, 2013
By ASHLEY HELMS
Manuela Maria Morgado, the Mamaroneck mother accused of killing her 4-year-old son last year, appeared in Westchester County Supreme Court on Dec. 12, but an official trial date still has not been set and the case was continued until Jan. 16.
Manuela Maria Morgado is scheduled to appear in Westchester County Supreme Court again on Jan. 16 in connection with the murder of her 4-year-old son last year. The court is waiting on the results of her mental health evaluation before continuing to trial.
File photo
Morgado, of 1035 E. Boston Post Road, pled not guilty to second-degree murder charges on Dec. 18, 2012 in the death of her son, Jason Reish. According to court documents, both the defense and prosecution teams were ready for trial as of April 18 of this year, but Morgado’s case has been adjourned since then while state and defense experts evaluate her psychiatric state. Morgado waived her right to appear in court on Jan. 16. She will be represented, as she has been since, by Saad Siddiqui, her legal aid attorney.Morgado faces up to 25 years in prison.
Lucian Chalfen, spokesper-son for the county District At-torney’s office, said Mor-gado’s Jan. 16 appearance will be before Supreme Court Judge Richard Molea, Assistant Dis-trict Attorney Christine Hat-field and Sidduqui to conference regarding the results of Morgado’s mental health evaluation. Her past eight appearances in Supreme Court since April have been regarding the status of her psychiatric evaluation.
“They may very well have a psychiatric side to the trial,” Chalfen said.
At a felony hearing on Oct. 18, 2012, Village of Mam-aroneck Police Detective Ber-nard McNally described the scene in Jason’s bedroom when he and his partner, Detective Edgar Prieto, arrived at Morgado’s home the day Jason Reish died.
Jason “appeared lifeless,” Mc-Nally said, was blue and rigor mortis had set in on one of his arms. A helium tank was on the bed, leaning against the headboard, and a plastic tube was attached to the tank with a mask on the other end. Morgado laid on her side next to her son’s body, facing him.
McNally said Prieto, speaking in Spanish, asked Morgado what happened. Prieto translated Morgado’s reply: “Now no one will take him from me.”
Detectives found a plastic syringe without a needle, several empty packages of adult cold medication and an empty prescription bottle in the bathroom. The syringe contained a reddish liquid residue.
The prescription bottle contained Alprazolam, a form of the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, which police believe Morgado took with the intent of committing suicide. She was taken to Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, where McNally and Prieto later questioned and arrested her.
After she was read and voluntarily waived her Miranda rights, McNally said Morgado told detectives she attempted to asphyxiate her son with two syringes of adult cold medicine and inhaled helium from the tank. After her original method failed, Morgado placed her hand over the child’s mouth and used her weight to smother her son against a pillow. He died after the second attempt, according to McNally.
McNally said Morgado told detectives she thought about killing her son for an extended period of time and researched a method on the Internet that she believed would cause the least suffering. She purchased the helium tank online for this purpose.
Morgado said she was frustrated with the family court system and feared she was going to lose custody of Jason to his father, Briarcliff doctor Timothy Reish, according to Mamaroneck police.
Harvey Loeb, Morgado’s legal aid at the time, tried to suggest Morgado may have been sedated when she confessed to police at Sound Shore Medical Center. It is unclear if Siddiqui will try to use this defense during her trial.
Village of Mamaroneck Judge Christie Derrico found significant evidence to indicate that a felony occurred in the death of Jason Reish and that Morgado committed that felony.
Morgado pled not guilty on Dec. 18, 2012, and was indicted by a Westchester County grand jury shortly thereafter.
She had a DNA sample taken on June 7 in order to place her, beyond a shadow of a doubt, at the crime scene in her home, according to Chalfen, who said the DNA results have not been made available yet and the court expects them to take an extended period of time to be finished.
Morgado remains in West-chester County Jail in Valhalla, where she is being held without bail until her trial date. Calls to Sidduqui were not returned as of press time.
