Pennsylvania grandmother found dead, baby missing, police say
By David Chang, NBCPhiladelphia.com
A woman is dead and her infant granddaughter is missing after a homicide and abduction at an Upper Merion, Pa., apartment, according to police.
Pennsylvania State Police issued an Amber Alert for the Upper Merion Township Police Department on Monday.
Police say Saavni Venna, a 10-month-old baby girl, was abducted from the Marquis Apartment complex in King of Prussia sometime between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Monday.
Investigators issued a child abduction alert just before 5 p.m. after they say a relative arrived at the apartment earlier in the afternoon and found the dead body of the baby's grandmother, 61-year-old Satyavathi Venna, and then realized the child was missing. Friends of the family tell NBC10 it was the baby's father, Shiva Venna, who called police.
Police described the baby as an Asian-Indian female, who is 2'6'' tall and weighs 21 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a white dress with pink flowers and wearing jewelry.
"Please don't do any harm to the kid," said Vasu Velaga, a neighbor of the family. "Please release her immediately. Please inform the police."
Shiva Venna spoke Monday night during a press conference.
"If someone finds my baby, could you please bring my baby back?" Venna pleaded. "Don't do any harm to my baby."

Amber Alert: Baby's disappearance 'intricately connected' to grandmother's slaying
October 23, 2012 at 1:11 PM, updated October 23, 2012 at 1:21 PM
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. — Authorities are searching for a 10-month-old girl who was declared missing after her grandmother was found slain inside an apartment in a Philadelphia suburb.
Investigators are focusing on reuniting Saanvi Venna with her parents in two probes that are "intricately connected," Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said.
Investigators did not immediately release details on the death of the girl's grandmother, 61-year-old Satyavathi Venna. Ferman would not say how the woman was killed or whether there were any suspects in the case.

"All of our resources are focused on finding Saanvi and reuniting her with
her parents," Ferman said in an interview. "The search for the
child is intricately connected to the homicide investigation."
Police issued an Amber alert for Saanvi on Monday following the discovery of her paternal grandmother's body at the Marquis Apartments in King of Prussia. Later in the night, the girl's father issued a tearful plea for his baby's return.
Upper Merion Township police said the girl's father, Venkata Konda Siva Venna, and mother, Chenchu Latha Punuru, immigrated to the U.S. from
India in February 2007. The couple lived in San Antonio, Cleveland and Troy, Mich., before moving to the Philadelphia-area apartment complex in June.
The grandmother who was killed had arrived in July and had been scheduled to return home in January, police said.
Family members speaking on behalf of the missing girl's parents pleaded for her return.
"We're all devastated right now," said Madhukar Sanikommu, 42, of Warren, N.J., a cousin of Saanvi's father.
The FBI is assisting in the investigation, said Frank Burton, a spokesman for the agency's Philadelphia office.
Anyone who sees the child or has information should call 911.

"Washington, Oct 25: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has intensified the search for a 10-month-old Indian baby who was abducted from her parents' apartment in a Philadelphia suburb earlier this week.
Satyavathi Venna, 61, was babysitting her granddaughter Saanvi on the morning of Oct 22 when somebody took away the infant after murdering the former. Investigators suspect that Satyavathi was killed between 8 am and 1 pm local time.
However, they are not revealing how she was murdered or whether any suspects have been identified. The Philly Inquirer quoted Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman as saying, "We do not want to do anything that would jeopardise the child's safety."
Pointing out that "the search and rescue operation" is also underway and therefore "this is not a typical homicide investigation", the District Attorney said, "All of our resources are focused on finding Saanvi and reuniting her with her parents. The search for the child is intricately connected to the homicide investigation."
Saanvi is the daughter of Venkata Konda Siva Venna and Chenchu Latha Punuru. The couple moved from Andhra Pradesh to the US in Feb 2007. Before shifting to King of Prussia (Pennsylvania) in Jun 2012, they resided at San Antonio (Texas), Troy (Michigan) and Cleveland (Ohio).
Satyavathi had come on a six-month visiting visa and was slated to return to India in Jan next year.
The local police and the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) have announced a reward of 30,000 US dollars for information leading to Saanvi's safe return. Members of TANA held a candle-light vigil in memory of Satyavathi on Oct 23.
Since an Amber Child Abduction Alert has already been issued by Pennsylvania State Police, the family of Saanvi and the Telugu community is hoping that she will be found soon.
Saanvi's uncle Ram Venna sought everyone's help in finding the infant. "Please call the police if you have any information that can help in locating Saanvi. All the family is grieving my mother's tragic death and praying for the safe return of my niece Saanvi. I hope we can successfully locate Saanvi," Ram said."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A 61-year-old Indian woman found slain in a suburban Philadelphia apartment where she was babysitting her granddaughter while visiting her family died of cuts to her neck and chest, a coroner said Thursday. The 10-month old girl remains missing.
Montgomery County Coroner Walter Hofman ruled the death of Satyavathi Venna a homicide. Investigators responding to the apartment in King of Prussia on Monday discovered Venna’s body and found the granddaughter, Saanvi Venna, missing. Authorities believe the abduction happened sometime between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. that day.
Authorities on Thursday said they are increasing the award for information leading to the baby’s safe return to $50,000.
The grandmother had been visiting from India since July, authorities said. She was scheduled to return home to India in January. No arrests have been announced in the case and police have released little information....."

Poster's note: This indeed is a strange case. While it is not unusual for the police to withhold information due to the ongoing investigation, nothing at all is being made public.
And I do think the Grandmother was murdered so the baby could be abducted. And the dear woman would have been back home in a few short months. Nothing has been mentioned about breaking and entering or items having been taken so I really believe there is a lot going on behind the scenes here.

Abducted Pennsylvania baby found dead; suspect in custody
Abducted Pennsylvania baby found dead; suspect in custody
By Kari Huus, NBC News
A 10-month-old Pennsylvania girl abducted after her grandmother, who was babysitting, was slain has been found dead, NBC10 in Philadelphia reported Friday.
Police have arrested a man who lives in the complex in connection with the death. They said they believe the man initially intended to kidnap the child and hold her for ransom. Investigators found a ransom note demanding $50,000 in the suspect's apartment.
The baby was suffocated and stuffed into a suitcase found hidden in the gym at the family's apartment complex, the Marquis Apartments, NBC10 said, citing Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri-Ferman.
The man was expected to be arraigned Friday afternoon, according to the television station.
The baby, Saanvi Venna, was last seen with her grandmother Satyavathi Venna, 61, who was staying with the baby’s family in their home in King of Prussia, Pa., about 15 miles northwest of Philadelphia.
The grandmother was found dead, with cuts to her neck and chest — ruled a homicide by the Montgomery County coroner on Thursday — and the baby was discovered missing.
The grandmother had been visiting from India since July, authorities said.
Investigators issued an Amber Alert just before 5 p.m. Monday after the child's father and murder victim's son, Venkata Konda Siva Venna, found the woman's body and realized his daughter was missing.

Police say Venna left work to check on the pair after receiving a call from a worried relative who was unable to reach them.
The baby’s mother, Chenchu Latha Punuru, was at work when Venna was killed and the child was taken, police said.
A reward for information leading to the safe return of the child had jumped from $30,000 to $50,000 on Thursday.

Oh, William, how could he? I can understand a guy getting upset with a crying baby and shaking it, I can even sort of wrap my mind around the idea of a pervert molesting and killing a child (not justifying this of course, no excuses), but to premeditate a crime like this and in cold blood murder the grandmother and then murder a little baby just for mercenary gain... there are no words.

There has been a tragic ending to the search for Saavni Venna, the 10-month-old baby girl who went missing in King of Prussia. In a press conference this afternoon, the Upper Merion District Attorney's office announced that her body was found at about 4:30 am Friday in a sauna in a bathroom in the basement gymnasium of one of the apartment buildings on the Marquis Apartment complex.
Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman also announced that they made an arrest in the case for both the murder of her grandmother and of Saavni. Raghunandan Yandamuri was a friend of family and they have known each other since at least the summer when the Vennas moved to the area. Yandamuri also inserted himself in the search and rescue process including printing fliers and handing them out, offering support to the family, and even attending the candle light vigil on Wednesday.
The motive behind the crimes is said to be an attempt to kidnap the child for ransom. He left around 10 copies of a ransom note in teh apartment asking for $50,000. He believed that Saavni's parents had money since they were both software engineers. In the process of trying to take young Saavni, he killed her Grandmother, stabbing her multiple times. He eventually killed Saavni, although the exact time is not yet known. It is believed he suffocated her with a handkerchief and then stuffed her in a suitcase. Exact details on how the little girl died will not be available until after an autopsy. Yandamuri faces charges of murder, kidnapping, robbery, burglary, theft and abuse of a corpse.
Raghunandan Yandamuri has been held without bail and allegedly confessed to the kidnapping and murders.
Saavni had been missing since her paternal grandmother was found murdered in their apartment on Monday at the Marquis Apartments at 251 West Dekalb Pike in King of Prussia. An Amber Alert had been issued and kept active for days. 61-year-old Satyavathi Venna was babysitting the little girl at the time. Satyavathi had been visiting the family from her home in India since July and planned to return in January. Saavni's parents, Venkata Venna and Chenchu Punuru, emigrated from India in 2007 and have previously lived in Texas, Michigan and Ohio before moving to their current Upper Merion home in June.
The FBI and multiple local and state agencies joined the search and abduction investigation. The FBI Special Evidence Response Team flew in their search bloodhounds from Quantico, VA, on Wednesday to assist with the search effort. Police conducted an intensive search and rescue operation looking in the neighborhoods, combing through the wooded areas behind the Marquis Apartments, handing out fliers, and interviewing family and neighbors. At this time they still have an unknown subject, unknown vehicle, and unknown motive in the kidnapping.
Since this was an Amber Alert situation, the Upper Merion District Attorney's office had been reluctant to release details about the investigation that might jeopardize the safe return of Saavni Venna. This included any information about the murder of her grandmother. DA Risa Ferman said that in the interest of Saavni's security and safety, the public interest will have wait for those details. She talked about some of those details today including the fact that a ransom note was left in the apartment by the kidnapper and that Saavni's mother did attempt to go to a location to meet the kidnapper with help from the authorities but no one showed.
About 200 joined a candlelight vigil at Heuser Park in King of Prussia on Wednesday, all praying for the safe return of an innocent child. Similar vigils were held in Indian communities around the country.
The Citizens' Crime Commission of Delaware Valley, the Upper Merion Township Police Department, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, and the Telugu Association of North America, an Indian group, came together to offer a $50,000 reward for information which was the same amount as the ramson demanded by Yandamuri.

Preliminary hearing scheduled Wednesday for Raghunandan Yandamuri, accused murderer of Saanvi Venna

An Upper Merion man accused of killing a 10-month-old baby and her grandmother during a botched kidnapping for ransom scheme is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. for a preliminary hearing.
Raghunandan Yandamuri, 26, will be represented by defense lawyer Stephen Heckman, former chief public defender in Montgomery County, when he has his preliminary hearing on charges of first- and second-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery, theft and abuse of a corpse in connection with the murders of 10-month-old Saanvi Venna and her grandmother, Satayvathi Venna, 61.
Heckman was appointed earlier this month by a panel of Montgomery County judges to represent Yandamuri.
Yandamuri is being held without bail while awaiting his preliminary hearing before District Court Judge James Gallagher. That hearing originally was scheduled for Friday but was postponed. A new hearing date has not yet been set.
The case is being prosecuted by First Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele, Deputy District Attorney Thomas McGoldrick and Assistant District Attorney Samantha Cauffman.
The grandmother was found dead inside her son’s apartment at the Marquis Apartment complex at 251 West DeKalb Pike in King of Prussia on Oct. 22. She died of cuts to her neck and chest, according to county Coroner Walter I. Hofman. Hofman ruled the death a homicide.
Yandamuri, prosecutors alleged, went to the apartment to kidnap the infant and in the process murdered the grandmother, who was trying to prevent the kidnapping. Authorities alleged no one else was involved in the kidnapping plot during which Yandamuri hoped to collect $50,000 ransom.
After the grandmother’s body was discovered, officials announced an Amber Alert for the missing child. Over the next several days police and the public launched an extensive search for the missing baby.
District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman previously said that during the subsequent search for the missing child Yandamuri, who knew the victims’ family, attended vigils and printed fliers asking for help in locating the baby.
According to Ferman, investigators found a ransom note inside the apartment. The type-written note read, “shiva your daughter has been kidnapped. If you report this to cops your daughter will be cut into pieces and found dead. If you inform this to anyone you will find your daughter body parts thrown into your apartments,” according to court papers.
The note went on to tell the parents that if they wanted their child back they must pay $50,000 by the end of the day. The letter ended by saying the baby is “starving since morning.”
Yandamuri eventually led investigators to the girl’s body, according to court papers. He allegedly told investigators he stuffed a handkerchief into the girl’s mouth and wrapped a towel around her head before putting her in a suitcase as part of the kidnapping.
The body of the child was found in the early morning hours of Oct. 26 under a bench in a sauna or bathroom area in the basement of one of the buildings in the Marquis apartment complex.
Saanvi’s parents immigrated to the United States from India in February 2007 and moved to the Upper Merion apartment in June 2012.

Video confession details deaths of baby, grandmother

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - November 28, 2012 (WPVI) -- In a gripping videotaped police statement played during a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, 26-year-old Raghunandan Yandamuri described the circumstances which led to the murder of a baby girl and her grandmother in Montgomery County.
It was a chilling, matter-of-fact tale.
And no one is more haunted than the parents of 10-month-old baby Saanvi. They sat quietly in court Wednesday and listened as Yandamuri descibed what happened in a videotaped confession.
"My intention was not to kill anyone or not to harm anyone. I only tried to kidnap the baby," Yandamuri told investigators.
But 61-year-old Satayvahti Venna struggled to protect her granddaughter.
On the video, Yandamuri demonstrates how he held the baby in one arm and fended off her grandmother. He says he accidentally slashed her across the throat with a kitchen knife, dropped the baby, and then fell on top of her.
Yandamuri then describes how he tried to keep the crying baby quiet by stuffing a handkerchief in her mouth and securing it with a towel.
"I kept the kerchief in the mouth and I surrounded the head with a towel around the neck and tied it hard. But I don't know if that was too tight for her," he said.
He then describes how he stuffed Saanvi into a suitcase and left her in an unused fitness room in the basement of one of the buildings at the Marquis Apartments on Route 202 in King of Prussia.
He says he went home and showered and then went to work.
When he arrived back home around 3:30 p.m. Yandamuri says he went to check on Saanvi and feed her.
"I took a bottle of milk, a water bottle like this and I filled it with milk," he told investigators.
"You filled it with milk from your house?" asked a detective.
"Yes, from my house," said Yandamuri.
"And where did you go?" asked the detective.
"I went to the gym again where Saanvi is and tried feeding her if she's awake," said Yandamuri.
"Okay, was she awake?" the detective asked.
"She's unconscious and she's not alive by the time I saw her," said Yandamuri.
Yandamuri has a gambling problem, and investigators say he was hoping to ransom Saanvi for $50,000.
But, with the baby now dead, Yandamuri joined the candlelight vigils and stood at the family's side as they pleaded for public help to find their daughter.
The prosecutor says they haven't decided yet whether to seek the death penalty.
Yandamuri's lawyer says keeping him alive is their main goal in the face of the damaging video.
"Certainly at this point it does not look helpful, based on what we've seen so far," said defense attorney Stephen Heckman.
Yandamuri's court-appointed lawyer tried to get the judge to drop the most serious charges of first degree murder, since a conviction carries the possibility of the death penalty.
Heckman argued that according to the video confession, Yandamuri didn't intend to kill either the grandmother or the baby, and therefore the deaths were accidental, not premeditated.
But Judge James Gallagher ordered Yandamuri held for trial for first degree murder in both deaths..

Montco D.A. seeks death penalty for alleged baby killer

NORRISTOWN — Prosecutors have decided to seek the death penalty against the Upper Merion man who allegedly kidnapped and killed his neighbor’s 10-month-old daughter in a desperate attempt to get ransom money.
Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman filed the paperwork Tuesday morning in the case of Raghunandan Yandamuri before Montgomery County Judge Steven T. O’Neill.
Yandamuri is accused in the October murders of 10-month-old Saanvi Venna and her grandmother, 61-year-old Satyavathi Venna.
Prosecutors allege Yandamuri went to the victims’ house with the intention of kidnapping the little girl and holding her for ransom. He told investigators he panicked after the grandmother opened the door Oct. 22 and a struggle ensued, according to court records.
“We only seek the death penalty in limited cases, reserving it for the worst of the worst,” First Assistant District Attorney Kevin R. Steele said. “In this case, we carefully evaluated the evidence before deciding to file the notice of our intention to seek the death penalty. In the two murders of Saanvi and Satyavathi, there is evidence of a number of aggravating factors including murder, while the victim was being held for ransom, killing in perpetration of a felony, multiple murders, murder of a child under (age) 12 and murder of a witness.”
Yandamuri, 26, was arrested and charged on Oct. 26, 2012, and appeared for a preliminary hearing before District Justice James Gallagher in Bridgeport. During that hearing, a 23-minute videotaped confession was played in court, showing Yandamuri re-enacting the events of that day, wherein he claims he accidentally slit Satyavathi Venna’s throat with a butcher knife.
“I know this is not a small mistake. I had a good job, a good life. I really feel sorry for what I did,” Yandamuri can be heard saying on the tape. He reportedly knew the victims’ family as neighbors in the Marquis Apartments on West Dekalb Pike in King of Prussia. Like him, the mother and father of Saanvi were young technology professionals from India.

9 PA jurors chosen for grandmother, baby slay case

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Nine jurors have been chosen for the Pennsylvania murder trial of a man charged in a botched kidnapping that left a grandmother and infant dead.
Prosecutors believe Raghunandan Yandamuri (rag-oo-NAHN'-dahn yahn-duh-MOHR'-ee) hoped to collect $50,000 ransom for the 10-month old girl to settle gambling debts.
They say the grandmother was babysitting in October 2012 when she was killed in a struggle with the intruder. The baby was later found dead in the basement of the King of Prussia apartment building.
The 27-year-old Yandamuri is representing himself in the capital murder case. He plans to argue that two other people committed the crimes.
Montgomery County police describe him as a family friend of the infant's software-engineer parents. Authorities say he had lost $15,000 at a nearby casino.

ACCUSED KILLER CROSS-EXAMINES VICTIMS' FAMILY IN MURDER TRIAL
Thursday, September 25, 2014
NORRISTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- The man accused of killing a baby and her grandmother in King of Prussia, elected to represent himself in the case, and on the emotional first day of the trial, he cross-examined the victims' family.
"It was difficult, they're being cross-examined by the person that murdered their mother and daughter," said Kevin Steele, prosecutor.
28-year-old Raghu Yandamuri, who tells jurors he's a scapegoat, is accused of killing 61-year-old Satyavahti Venna and her 10-month-old granddaughter Saanvi two years ago.
Venkata Venna lost both his mother and daughter that day.
In court on Thursday, he recounted the shock of discovering his dead mother on the kitchen floor and the frantic search for his baby.
Prosecutors say Yandamuri, who was drowning in gambling debts, left behind a ransom note demanding $50,000.
Police videotaped a confession, which he now recants, in which he describes killing the grandmother. In the video, he also describes stuffing a rag in the baby's mouth, wrapping her head in a towel and locking her in a suitcase.
On Thursday, both of the baby's parents refused to look at Yandamuri as he cross-examined them, sitting just 10 feet away.
Venkata Venna ended his testimony saying, "No one should experience this. It shouldn't happen to anyone."
His wife at one point cried out, "God Bless my baby!" before collapsing in tears.
There's an old axiom among lawyers: A man who represents himself in a murder trial has a fool for a client.
However Yandamuri's standby court appointed attorney says, he's seen lawyers do worse:
"He's just getting a feel for when he has to know, when to make objections and do that sort of thing. But he's doing fine for a prose person whose not a citizen of the United States," said Steve Heckman, standby attorney.
The trial is set to continue Friday.
If the jury finds him guilty, they will then have to decide whether to impose the death penalty.
