NYPD: Nanny stabs 2 children to death in Upper West Side home

By Shimon Prokupecz and Gus Rosendale, NBCNewYork.com

An Upper West Side nanny stabbed a 1-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl to death inside their apartment Thursday afternoon before cutting her own throat, police said.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the mother of the children returned to her West 75th Street home after a swimming lesson with a third child, a 3-year-old girl.

The apartment was dark when the mother and daughter entered, and the mother went to look for her two other children, said Kelly.

"She goes downstairs to the lobby, assuming the nanny may have gone out with the children," Kelly told reporters in a briefing Thursday night. "She asks the doorman if in fact they have gone out, and he says 'No.' She goes back up, the apartment is dark, and she goes into the bathroom."

That's where she discovered her two children stabbed in the bathtub, Kelly said. They've been identified as Lucia and Leo Krim.

The nanny was on the floor of the bathroom with self-inflicted stab wounds to her throat. A kitchen knife was nearby.

Neighbors said they heard the mother's screams from her apartment as she called 911. After police arrived, a neighbor said the mother remained in the building's lobby, screaming and clutching her surviving child.

The 50-year-old nanny is in custody. She's hospitalized in critical condition.

The children's father, Kevin Krim, an executive with CNBC, was on a business trip at the time of the tragedy.

CNBC's parent company Comcast along with the business network and NBC Universal issued a statement Friday about the Krims' "unimaginable loss." It added, "The sadness that we all feel for Kevin, Marina and their family is without measure. Our thoughts, prayers and unwavering support are with them all."

Sad. I can't imagine what the mother is going through to find her two babies dead like that. If your going to kill your self don't take children with you. There are plenty of good people to love them. Just breaks my heart.

LEO and LUCIA KRIM - 1 and 6 yo - / Accused: Yoselyn Ortega nanny - New York, NY OB-VC942_NYnann_E_20121026131836

The children, identified by a law-enforcement official as 2-year-old Leo Krim and his 6-year-old sister, Lucia, were found by their mother after she returned home about 5:30 p.m. They were both taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where they were declared dead.

Yoselyn Ortega, 50, who had been watching the children, was lying unconscious on the bathroom floor with apparent slash wounds to her neck and a kitchen knife by her side, police said. She is believed to have attempted suicide.

Marina Krim, who police said discovered the bodies of her murdered children Thursday evening, kept a public blog on Livejournal.com that chronicled her family’s activities and the everyday milestones in her children’s lives. (A third child, 3-year-old Nessie, was with Ms. Krim at the time of the murders.)

Kevin Krim, the father, is a senior vice president and general manager at CNBC Digital, according to his profile on the social-networking website LinkedIn. The family lives in the 11-story La Rochelle luxury building at 57 W. 75th St. in Manhattan, where mourners were leaving flowers and memorials on Friday.

Ms. Krim’s Livejournal blog, which has been suspended but remains visible in online-search archives, includes frequent posts about Lucia (known as Lulu), Leo and Nessie, as well as a the family’s greyhound dog named Babar. The updates and photos chronicle life Manhattan, a trip to a pumpkin patch and a hot dog meal from a street vendor.

Ms. Krim had posted lovingly about her son just hours before his death:

Leo speaks in the most adorable way possible. Firstly, he speaks super clearly, so you can understand every word is he is [sic] saying. And he does things like, “(I) want a fresh bagel” and “Dito (what he calls himself) wants cold milk” and most adorable of all, “No thank you” – he never uses “No” alone, it’s always paired with “thank you”.

On a wedding website created by Ms. Krim’s sister, the children are also described with enthusiasm. Lulu is said to love “art projects, ballet and all things princess!” Leo, notes the wedding website profile, “plans on learning how to walk in the next few months, just in time for the big day!”

The family’s relationship with the nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, is mentioned on the Livejournal blog. Ms. Krim describes traveling to the Dominican Republic to meet “Josie’s amazing familia!!!”

The blog also refers to Josie as helping the daughters do their hair. The nanny “must have been a hair stylist in her past life,” Ms. Krim wrote.

Nanny Reportedly Had 'Vicious' Fight With Marina Krim Before Killings & The Truth Is Coming Out
Posted by Kiri Blakeley
on November 6, 2012 at 10:26 AM

There's an old saying about hiding in plain sight. Sometimes we look for something complex and hidden when, in fact, the truth is starkly, and plainly, before us. We just don't want to see it. And the truth about the motive in the Krim family nanny killings is beginning to look more like something plain and simple: The nanny hated the Krims. Or, at the very least, hated mother Marina Krim.

RadarOnline is reporting that Marina and her nanny, Yoselyn Oretega, had a "vicious" and "epic" argument the day before Yoselyn allegedly butchered her two children to death.
Law enforcement reportedly said:

Yoselyn also said that when she left at the end of the day before the murders, Marina ignored her when she said good-bye and this made her very, very angry ... Yoselyn also said she had numerous disagreements with Marina about how the kids were being cared for.

Reportedly in the weeks leading up to the children's deaths, Yoselyn had been warned that her job was in danger.

There were hints all along, of course, that Yoselyn's real target was Marina. There was the way she stabbed the children to death shortly before Marina was to come home -- father Kevin was out of state, so it was Marina she wanted to hurt. She also reportedly began stabbing herself as soon as Marina walked into the room. She wanted Marina to see all of this.

We also heard about how one of the things Marina began screaming when she found her bloodied children was, "I'm never speaking to her again!!!" I thought that was a strange thing to say, but figured that Marina was uttering incoherent gibberish. But it also sounded suspiciously like a woman in the middle of an argument with another woman and one of them finally went too far.

Also, Yoselyn had reportedly uttered, "Marina knows what happened," on the first day of questioning. Again this sounded like a beef between the two of them. My guess is that Yoselyn knew what would hurt Marina the most -- and that would be killing her children, not her.

Of course there are other questions to be answered and ones we may never quite know the answer to -- why didn't she just quit if she was so unhappy? How could she take her rage out on innocent children? We also can't discount the fact that Yoselyn could have been mentally imbalanced or had something physically wrong with her. But let's be honest -- do we offer up that excuse for everyone who kills? Do we say that the teen who shoots a man for his wallet is mentally imbalanced? Do we say the husband who kills his wife because he's having an affair is mentally imbalanced?

If we're going to say that Yoselyn Ortega was mentally imbalanced, what about everyone else who kills, including moms who kill their newborns so they can party with their boyfriends? Okay, maybe anyone who kills is mentally imbalanced. And maybe not. Maybe people just do really bad things sometimes.

This is such a tragedy. Why would a mother have a nanny that argued with her about how to treat her children?

Why would a nanny work for a woman she hated?

How could anyone be crazy enough to murder two children in such a horrific manner, or any manner?

'Killer Nanny' Yoselyn Ortega makes first public appearance, faces murder charges of 2 tots

Yoselyn Ortega is seen in court today for the first time since the brutal slayings of two young children in her care.

She has hidden these four months from reporters and cameras. But today, the
notorious accused Killer Nanny made her first public appearance,
sitting hunched and handcuffed at the defense table for a brief hearing.

Yoselyn Ortega, wearing baggy gray sweats and with her hair in
loosely-braided cornrows and pigtails, came to court for an update on
her first degree murder indictment in the unfathomable knife-point
slaughters of two young, Upper West Side children under her care.

Lucia and Leo Krim perished in the October 25 slashing. The girl was 6 years old. The boy was 2.

Ortega was in court for just two minutes, during which Manhattan Supreme Court
Justice Gregory Carro expressed impatience at the length of time it is
taking for her to be psychologically evaluated. Ortega, who now bears a
thick slashing scar to the front of her neck, listened via a Spanish
interpreter.

"Six thousand pages have to be read," Ortega's
public lawyer Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg responded, referring to the
medical records Ortega has generated prior to the stabbings and during
her four months in a prison ward at Elmhurst Hospital, where she
remains. "That might take a while," the lawyer said.

"They've had them for a while," the judge responded. "It's not like they got them
yesterday." Ortega will be brought to a courthouse clinic for further
evaluation on March 21, and back to open court April 5 for possible
psych exam results, the judge said.

Lucia and Leo Krim had been
found bleeding to death in the bathtub of their W. 75th Street apartment
by their mother, Marina Krim, when the mom returned home with her third
child, Nessie, 3, who survives.

Ortega was still in the
apartment, and had slashed her own self in the throat, authorities said.
The Krim family did not attend today's proceeding.

The nanny kept her head down during much of the brief hearing, her eyes fixed on
the defense table except for one worried glance at news photographers.
It was her fifth court proceeding, but her first time being
photographed; her lawyer has zealously tried to keep reporters and
cameras away.

"It is a pathetic woman who lies here," Van Leer-Greenberg, had told a judge in a failed attempt to bar reporters
from Ortega's November hospital bed arraignment.

"She is in a very debilitated condition. She has tubes running out of her torso. She
has a right to privacy," the lawyer argued then. Today, the lawyer's
protests were denied. The lawyer declined to talk to the press as she
left with a pair of middle aged women who had attended court on Ortega's
behalf.

The reasons for the slaughter have remained unclear. Law
enforcement sources have said that Ortega was unhappy with the Krim
family for meeting her request for a raise with an offer of additional
pay in exchange for five hours of week of housekeeping.

NYC nanny found fit for trial in stabbing deaths

Published April 05, 2013

Associated Press

NEW YORK – A nanny charged with stabbing two small children to death last
year while their mother picked up her other child from a swim lesson was
found fit for trial Friday.

Police said they found Yoselyn Ortega last October in the bathroom of her employer's Upper West Side
apartment. The bodies of 6-year-old Lucia Krim, called Lulu, and her
2-year-old brother, Leo, were nearby in a pool of blood, and Ortega had
stabbed herself as well. She was taken to a hospital.

Ortega was examined by two mental health professionals, Justice Gregory Carro said
in Manhattan state Supreme Court. Both found that she could assist in
her defense in a meaningful way and that she was mentally fit to proceed
to her trial. Her lawyer, who declined to comment outside court, is
challenging those results.

Ortega has pleaded not guilty to murder. Her sister has said she loved the children and is a peaceful woman.

After the children's funeral, their shattered parents established the Lulu
& Leo Fund to raise money for children's education and enrichment
programs. They started a Facebook page for the fund, filled with Lulu's
art and photos of the smiling little girl and her brother.

Ortega's next court date was set for May 6.

Parents of Murdered Kids in Nanny Case Filled with 'Hope' Over New Pregnancy

By GILLIAN MOHNEY

May 20, 2013

The mother of two children allegedly killed by their nanny last fall is pregnant again, and their story might provide an example for other bereft parents that life can still go on, according to experts.

Last October, Marina Krim came home after a swimming lesson with her 3-year-old daughter, Nessie, to find the bodies of her 2-year-old son, Leo, and her 6-year-old daughter, Lulu, in a bathtub. Their nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, was charged with their murder.

On Thursday, Krim and her husband, Kevin Krim, announced they were expecting a baby.

In a post on the Facebook page for the Lulu and Leo Fund, an arts education fund created in honor of their children, the couple wrote they were "filled with many emotions as we look to the future, but the most important one is hope."

For parents who have experienced such a traumatic loss, experts say, a pregnancy can help with the grieving process even as it brings up other emotions.

"They still have a family [they] get to love and cherish and enjoy," said Dr. Marlene Maron, chief psychologist for Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vt."They are more appreciative than most of us who can whine and complain about the annoying things the people we love do…You really become very grateful for every good day."

While the Krims have not given interviews, they've used Facebook to write about memories of their children and how they've dealt with their grief.

On Mother's Day, Marina Krim wrote about putting up sand dollars she had collected with her children on an earlier vacation.

"We lovingly collected over 100 sand dollars along Playa Coco during that trip," she wrote. "Lulu was a particularly good and dedicated shell hunter. ... Mounting [the shells] on the wall this morning was therapeutic for me and a perfect way to connect with my angels this Mother's Day."

Maron said that the couple's decision to write about their grief on a social network site can help them through their traumatic loss by
allowing online commentators to offer words of support or share their own stories, as well.

"That honors the memory of the child, but also helps you with their healing," said Maron. "[When] other people are writing, then there's the shared collective experience."

The post announcing Marina Krim's pregnancy already had more than 5,000 "likes" as of midday Friday.

While Maron said writing about loss can be helpful for some couples, she cautioned that everyone grieves differently and, even if parents decide to have another baby, it does not mean they will ever "get over" a child's death.

"There's no such thing as getting over the loss of a child. There's no such thing as moving on or having closure," said Maron. "[But even knowing] what could happen, you will have new joys."

Maron added that, for couples like Marina and Kevin Krim who still have to care for a surviving child or decide to have another child, the day-to-day tasks of being a parent can help pull them out of the grief.

"Kids need predictability and routine," said Maron. "These parents are parents. Being parents [can] help them recover.

'Oh my God, who did that to them?' Nanny 'feigns denial' after being confronted with grisly images of 2 children 'she stabbed to death'

By Lydia Warren  PUBLISHED: 09:03 EST, 8 November 2013

A Manhattan nanny accused of stabbing two children to death has claimed to have no memory of the killings, asking, 'who did that to them?' when confronted with gory images of their bloodied bodies.

Yoselyn Ortega's attorney revealed that the grisly photos of six-year-old Lucia Krim and her two-year-old brother, Leo, failed to jar her client.

'These photos are very graphic,' Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg said after an evidence hearing in Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday.

She has claimed she had nothing to do with it and acted surprised when she saw images of their bodies

She said that after showing Ortega the images, 'she turns to me and says, "Oh, my God, who did that to them?" She has no mind, no memory of the incident', the New York Daily News reported.

Ortega has claimed she had nothing to do with the grisly deaths of Lucia and Leo in their parents' Upper West Side apartment in October 2012.

Their mother, Marina, returned home with her other daughter, then three, to find their tiny bodies in the bathtub with Ortega allegedly slitting her own throat next to them in an attempt to take her life.

Ortega, a 50-year-old Dominican immigrant, has been charged with murder but maintains she is innocent. A judge has declared her mentally fit to stand trial.

On Thursday, she appeared in court wearing a gray sweatshirt with the scar to her neck still visible. She stayed silent throughout the hearing, the Daily News reported.

She was ordered to return to court on December 12 for another pretrial conference.

In June, she claimed in an interview that she had nothing to do with the deaths, saying, 'I didn't do that. Someone else did.'

When Ortega was questioned by police after awaking from a coma, she had attempted to paint Mrs Krim in a bad light, shifting part of the blame for the tragedy on her.

Ortega, who had told neighbors and family that she was short of money, reportedly said she resented her employers because they kept telling her what to do and asked her to do the housework.

The Krims have since began to rebuild their lives. Last month, they welcomed a son, Felix.

'We are very excited to share with you that Felix Harrison Krim, all 8 pounds, 10 ounces, and 21.5 inches of him, arrived today. Marina, Felix and all of us are healthy and happy,' they wrote on Facebook.

LEO and LUCIA KRIM - 1 and 6 yo - / Accused: Yoselyn Ortega nanny - New York, NY BBdNZg0 © Lucas Jackson/Reuters Yoselyn Ortega the nanny who is accused of killing Lucia and Leo Krim, ages 6 and 2 respectively, arrives for a hearing for her trial at Manhattan Supreme Court in New York, July 8, 2013.

NEW YORK — The New York nanny accused of killing two children in the bathtub of their home said she was sorry for what she had done, according to court papers Friday.

Yoselyn Ortega, 52, has pleaded not guilty to killing 6-year-old Lucia Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim on Oct. 25, 2012, in a bathroom while their mother was out picking up her third child from a swimming lesson.

Ortega cut her throat in a failed suicide attempt. The court papers say she told authorities the little girl tried to fight back before she stabbed her then killed the boy. She used at least two knives.

"Oh my God, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what I've done," she said, according to the court papers. "Relieve me of my misery."

The documents were included as exhibits in lengthy motions filed by defense attorney Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg. She asked that the prosecutor be dropped from the case and that the judge bar news media from an upcoming court hearing.

Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro denied both requests.

Van Leer-Greenberg has said Ortega cannot understand the case because of her injuries and because she suffers from delusions. But a judge found her fit for trial.

Ortega's statements have not previously been made public. They included details from interviews with authorities after she regained consciousness. She told authorities that she hurt the children because she was having money problems and was angry at the parents. She said her schedule constantly shifted, she had to act as a cleaning lady though she didn't want to, and missed an appointment with "the psych," according to the papers.

"I had to do everything and take care of the kids," she said. "God forgive me, so many things they made me do. Pray for me."

In the moments before the killings, the children were out getting ice cream and going to a park because Lulu, as Lucia was called, didn't want to go to dance class, according to the court papers.

The parents, Kevin and Marina Krim, have not spoken publicly about the killings. Last year at a fundraiser for their nonprofit, they said they missed their children every day, and they will forever. "We are just heartbroken," Kevin Krim said. "But they inspire us every day as well. Their lives give us a purpose."
