Mother, Boyfriend Criminal History in Toddlers Death

We're learning more today about the young boy in Lafayette who deputies say was killed at the hand's of his mother's boyfriend. The Lafayette Parish Coroner says 3-year-old Julian Madera died from several traumatic injuries but an exact cause of death could take several months to determine.The boy's mother and her boyfriend are both under arrest Laura Smith is charged with principle to first degree murder her boyfriend, Landon Broussard is facing the first degree murder charge.

Today we found out both have a criminal past. Smith and Broussard were both arrested together just a few weeks ago on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. Lafayette police say they had an unidentified girl in their car, who did not have her parents permission to be with them. As for other crimes Landon Broussard has a much more extensive rap sheet. Now behind bars on first degree murder, Landon Broussard is no stranger to the Lafayette Parish Jail.

He's served time for disturbing the peace, remaining after forbidden, that means not leaving somewhere when he was ordered out. He's also served time for simple criminal damage to property.

Broussard also has pending charges including simple criminal damage to property, simple battery and principle to simple robbery & battery.

"A total of 9 arrest associated including the arrest yesterday associated with Landon Broussard in Lafayette Parish," said Lafayette Sheriff Kip Judice.

The most serious charge is now pending against Broussard. According to the arrest affidavit, deputies say 21-year-old Landon Broussard showed up at his grandmother's house carrying the badly bruised, naked body of the 3-year-old boy. After further investigation, police say the boy suffered severe blunt force trauma to the head, face and neck. He also had a split lip, part of one ear was torn and there were also apparent traumatic injuries to the boy's privates.

"Were there visible bruises, were there any injuries associated with it, did the child complain, even those people that had contact with Landon and Laura to help us establish what exactly may have been the factors or the things that could lead to this," said Judice.

Police believe Julian's mom could have stepped in to prevent the incident. She had little to say as she was booked Thursday night.

An autopsy was conducted today and authorities tell us arrangements are being made to bring Julian to Fairfield, Texas where his biological father will make funeral arrangements.
