LOS ANGELES — After an overnight search, police found a 10-year-old girl on Wednesday near a coffee shop six miles from her home in a Los Angeles suburb.
The girl was spotted by someone who recognized her from information that had been publicized and contacted authorities, police Capt. Kris Pitcher said.
She had been dropped off by an unidentified individual and found outside a Starbucks, authorities said. Officers say they saw bruises and cuts on her face.
"She basically is in shock right now," Pitcher said. "She's walking, she's talking, she's conversing with the officers and with the FBI agents, and with the doctors and the nurses at the hospital."
The girl was wearing an oversized white T-shirt and was barefoot when she was found after a nearly 12-hour search. Her parents reported the night before that she had been wearing a black T-shirt emblazoned with characters from the TV show "Heroes" before she vanished from the family home in Northridge.
Los Angeles police asked that the girl's name not be used because they were still investigating her disappearance.
It was unclear if she might have been abducted or lured from her home.
"We are turning every stone we can to catch up with this individual," Pitcher said.
The girl's parents said she was last seen in her bedroom after midnight and was gone when they checked on her a few hours later, police spokesman Richard French said.
There was no indication of foul play, and the parents said nothing happened in the house that might have prompted the girl to run away, French said.
Officers went door to door in a two-mile radius and interviewed the girl's classmates and friends. The FBI's child abduction unit was also involved in the search, Pitcher said.
Police Lt. Terri Brinkmeyer said the girl did not have a history of running away.
"She's a good kid. She's not a troublemaker, and this isn't anything she would normally do," he said.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A 10-year-old Northridge girl reported missing overnight has been found and appears to be OK. But questions remain about her disappearance.
The girl was taken to West Hills Hospital and Medical Center to be evaluated. Investigators say the girl had some facial bruising and lacerations when she was found, but appeared OK otherwise physically. She was walking and talking to officers.
Police said they believe the girl was kidnapped from her home in the middle of the night.
Authorities say the girl's mother last saw her when she went to bed at their home in the 8000 block of Oakdale Avenue at about 1 a.m. Wednesday. Around 3:40 a.m., the mother went to the restroom, and when she checked in on her daughter, she was missing.
The girl was being interviewed by LAPD investigators after she was examined at a hospital in the evening.
According to the LAPD, the girl was taken against her will by two men. It's believed the two men may have entered her house through the back. A side gate that had been secured by the parents in the evening was found open, police said.
The girl was taken to a storage facility at Mason Avenue and Nordhoff Street, then it was believed that she was taken to an abandoned rental property on the 8000 block of Hatillo Avenue, just a street away from the girl's home. It was later determined that she had not been taken to the rental property. Police said they believe there was another location where she was held.
The girl was dropped off at Kaiser Hospital at De Soto Avenue and Burbank Boulevard. She walked from there to a Starbucks at Canoga Avenue and Oxnard Street, where she was recognized by a citizen about 2:45 p.m. The citizen flagged down a passing LAPD sergeant.
At the moving company storage trailer, detectives scoured the inside for clues.
Neighbors of the empty rental property said they were in disbelief. Next door neighbor Dwayne Smith said the owners of the house moved out a few months ago. Smith and his family are shaken by the apparent kidnapping.
"It's very unexpected," Smith said. "We moved here, we thought it is a very safe neighborhood. When something like this happens right in your backyard, it makes you a little nervous."
The girl could only describe one of her suspects, saying he was a white male about 18 years old. The second suspect is a male but she could not describe him any further.
The LAPD said they were interviewing the girl slowly so as not to further traumatize her.
A black pickup truck believed to be part of the case was recovered at the storage facility. They also said they believed a second vehicle was involved.
The girl was held about nine to 10 hours, according to the LAPD.
The family told investigators that she did not have a history of running away and has a good relationship with her parents.
Detectives were seen going door to door in the neighborhood in search of the girl. Officers spent extra time at a home where a registered sex offender lives, looking through trash cans and a backyard shed.
Police said there are still many gaps in this case and that they're looking at surveillance video from a daycare center near the girl's home. They're hoping the young victim can provide them with more details.
Police said they do not believe the suspects were armed and that the victim did not know them.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information on the case to call Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles police are working with the FBI to track down two men in connection to the apparent kidnapping of a 10-year-old Northridge girl, who was later found in Woodland Hills.
Nearly 12 hours after the young girl was reported missing, she was spotted at a Starbucks on Canoga Avenue and Oxnard Street at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. She told police two men had kidnapped her from her home in the 8000 block of Oakdale Avenue and then dropped her off at a Kaiser hospital near the location where she was found.
"We're talking about a 10-year-old girl, and so she's been through a traumatic experience," said LAPD Capt. Andrew Smith. "She's discussed that there were several vehicles and several individuals involved."
LAPD's robbery homicide division has taken over the case and is working with the FBI to track down the two men. The girl could only describe one of her suspects, saying he was a white male about 18 years old. The second suspect is a male, but she could not describe him any further. Family members told Eyewitness News that investigators took lots of fingerprints at the Northridge home, which may link them to the two men.
The intruder was able to enter a backdoor and find his way to where the girl slept. Family members told Eyewitness News that the girl's bedroom sits between her brother and parents' bedrooms and that her door is always closed.
Police say the girl was taken to two locations -- an abandoned house and a storage facility -- before being dropped off near the hospital. Smith said it remains unclear whether the victim was chosen at random, or whether she was a specific target.
"Right now, we're looking at this as a stranger abduction," Smith said.
Police were careful about the details released in the apparent abduction.
"Detectives don't want to talk about it specifically, how the individual entered the house. They don't to discuss the intimate details of which room she was in," Smith said.
Police say they are following all possible leads, including searching through video from surveillance cameras near the 10-year-old's house in hopes of finding out more about the brazen kidnappers.
"It's very rare that someone will come into a home and abduct a child. More often than not, when you have a case like this, and a child gets abducted, they end up getting killed. We're very fortunate that she's still alive in this incident," Smith said.
The LAPD is also looking at a separate kidnapping case in 2008 involving the girl's cousins, who were young boys at the time. But there was no mystery about who had taken the boys; their fathers, John and George Silah, served time in prison for the abductions and flying them to the Netherlands to hide.
Police are looking into whether there's a connection with a break-in that happened at a house about a block away, which occurred at about the same time the girl went missing.
A black pickup truck believed to be part of the case was recovered at the storage facility Wednesday night. Authorities also said they believed a second vehicle was involved.
Residents in the neighborhood where the abduction happened remain in a state of shock and fear. Amanda Velasquez, who lives behind the victim's house, said she kept checking on her children during the night and checking the locks at the house.
"My 8-year-old's scared. She was in my room last night, sleeping on an air mattress because she didn't want to sleep in her bed. She didn't want to be alone," Velasquez said.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information is urged to call the LAPD Robbery Homicide Tipline at (213) 486-6890.

Hi So Cal. Because it's a different topic, but related.
I wonder if this little girl went somewhere (Starbucks?) she wasn't supposed to and is afraid she will be blamed for being kidnapped. She's so very young I just don't think she understands it all. I'm quite sure she is traumatized. This is so sad. I'm thankful she was not kept longer, or even worse, murdered.
You're right, it's very strange.

Unnamed girl - 10 yo - / Accused: Tobias Summers, Daniel Martinez - Los Angeles, CA
By GREG RISLING updated 4/4/2013 4:34:39 AM ET
— The knifepoint kidnapping and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl started as a burglary, until the suspect apparently changed his mind and took the child from her San Fernando Valley bedroom, police said.
New details in the case were released Wednesday along with charges against 30-year-old Tobias Summers, who remains a fugitive.
Summers was charged with kidnapping burglary and nearly three dozen counts of sexual assault. If convicted, he faces multiple life terms in prison.
His alleged accomplice Daniel Martinez, 29, was also charged in the kidnapping Wednesday. He was in custody after his Monday arrest.
According to police, Summers broke into the house in the middle of the night March 27 while Martinez waited in a getaway car. Summers emerged from the home with the girl and they both got in the car.
Martinez drove a short distance and then abandoned the vehicle and disappeared. Summers took the girl to a vacant home nearby where he held her captive, police said.
At some point, according to a criminal complaint, Summers sexually assaulted her and forced her to pose for nude photos. The girl turned up about 12 hours later after the harrowing ordeal, disoriented and disheveled.
Police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said it was unclear why Summers abducted the girl but investigators don't believe he had targeted her when he initially went to the home.
Martinez was charged with one count each of kidnapping and burglary. He faces a maximum 12-year prison term if found guilty. A phone message left for deputy public defender Robert Kayne was not immediately returned.
The girl was snatched from her bedroom and was found wandering near a Starbucks about six miles away. She was barefoot, had bruises and scratches, and wasn't wearing the same clothes she had on when she vanished.
Both men have had problems with law enforcement in the past. Summers has a criminal record dating back to 2002 that includes arrests for robbery, battery and grand theft auto. Court records show Martinez has been convicted of burglary and grand theft.
Police have received more than 130 tips in recent days regarding Summers, who they believe may have fled to San Diego or Mexico and changed his appearance by shaving his head.

A fugitive charged with abducting and sexually assaulting a 10-year-old Los Angeles girl has been captured in Mexico, authorities said Wednesday.
Tobias Summers, 30, was taken into custody by Mexican authorities acting on information from the FBI, according to bureau spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.
Additional details were being withheld, she said. A news conference in Los Angeles to announce the arrest was scheduled for noon.
"We're glad we got him," said Los Angeles police Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese, who heads the detective bureau. "We're working on getting him back to Los Angeles right now."
The victim vanished from her home in the Northridge area of Los Angeles on March 27. She was found about 12 hours later wandering near a Starbucks several miles away.
Authorities later arrested Daniel Martinez as a suspected accomplice and revealed that Summers had been spotted in a video recording as he crossed the border into Mexico at Tecate, east of San Diego.
Summers is charged with kidnapping, burglary and nearly three dozen counts of sexual assault. He's described as a transient with a criminal record including convictions for burglary and grand theft.
On Wednesday, the FBI website showed pictures of Summers and his tattoos with the word "captured" across the bottom of each photo.
Martinez, 29, has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and burglary.
Mexican authorities distributed "wanted" posters with Summers' picture and put police in the cities of Tecate, Ensenada and Rosarito Beach on alert.
Authorities believe Summers broke into the girl's home planning to burglarize it but instead abducted her at knifepoint. They believe Martinez was waiting outside in a car the two used to flee with the girl.
Martinez soon abandoned the car and vanished, police have said, while Summers took the girl to a vacant home where he assaulted her.
Summers has a criminal record dating to 2002 that includes arrests for robbery, battery and grand theft auto. Court records show Martinez has been convicted of burglary and grand theft.

Re: Unnamed Girl - 10 yo - / Accused: Tobias Summers and Daniel Martinez - Northridge, CA
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Tobias Dustin Summers, the primary suspect in the kidnapping of a 10-year-old girl from Northridge, has been arrested in Mexico.
The arrest came around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Mexican authorities got a tip from the FBI that Summers may be at a rehab center in a small Mexican village. Officers checked it out and found him, according to Alfredo Arenas, commander of the Baja California State Police fugitive squad.
Authorities say he was supposedly getting treatment at a rehab center. He was living there and doing odd jobs, but stayed inside, Arenas said.
"We're very happy because this will provide a measure of justice to the family and to the small child who was abused, and they know that this trash bag is going to be facing justice in the United States," Arenas said.
Summers was charged with 37 felonies, including kidnapping, burglary and nearly three dozen sex-related counts. If convicted, Summers, a parolee with a criminal record dating back to 2002, could face multiple life terms in prison.
Suspected accomplice Daniel Martinez, who was arrested April 3, pleaded not guilty to one count each of kidnapping and first-degree burglary.
Authorities said they believe 29-year-old Martinez was waiting in a car outside the girl's home while Summers kidnapped the girl on March 27. Martinez then allegedly drove a short distance with Summers and the girl, then left and was not further involved. The girl was found hours later wandering six miles from her home near a Starbucks in Woodland Hills. She was barefoot, had bruises and scratches, and wasn't wearing the same clothes she had on when she vanished.
The 30-year-old transient has been the subject of an international search since the kidnapping. He had been spotted in a video recording as he crossed the border into Mexico at Tecate, east of San Diego. Mexican officials say the FBI came through with that tip, leading to Summer's arrest.
Officials say Summers will be handed over to the FBI in San Diego around noon.
