Martin Richard, 8, killed in Boston Marathon blast
By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News
The eight-year-old boy killed in the sudden blasts at the Boston Marathon was Martin Richard of Dorchester, Mass.
Richard was at the race to watch his father cross the finish line, NBC affiliate WHDH reported. The boy's mother and father were identified as William and Denise Richard by the Boston Globe. The boy's mother and his six-year-old sister were reported to have been seriously injured in the explosion. A third child has been reported uninjured.
Friends of the family gathered at Tavolo Restaurant on Monday night in Dorchester, where William Richard is a community leader.
“They are beloved by this community. They contribute in many ways. That’s why you see this outpouring,” City Councilor at Large Ayanna Pressley told the Boston Globe. “It’s surreal, it’s tragic, it’s incomprehensible. Everyone here tonight is trying to comfort one another and be prayerful.”

The eight-year-old boy killed in Monday’s bomb blasts at the Boston Marathon has been identified as Martin Richard of Dorchester, Mass.
Richard’s mother, Denise, and his six-year-old sister were reported to have been seriously injured in the explosion that killed three and wounded at least 176.
Denise Richard suffered a brain injury and was recovering after undergoing surgery Monday night, according to WHDH. Richard’s sister reportedly lost a leg. The family’s third child was reportedly uninjured.
Rep. Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Tuesday that he had spoken with William Richard, Martin’s father.
“The dad is a runner, but he wasn’t running yesterday,” Lynch said. “They were there to support some of their friends who were running.”
“The kids were all up on the barrier” as runners streamed in, Lynch said. “They were all focused forward and the blast came from the back and the side.”
Friends of the family gathered at Tavolo Restaurant on Monday night in Dorchester, where the boy’s father is a community leader. Denise Richard worked at the local Neighborhood House Charter School, The Associated Press reported, where the kids attended.
The boy loved to clamber up trees in the neighborhood and play outside his home, neighbor Betty Delorey told the AP.
On the stoop of the family’s home, a single candle burned on Tuesday. One word was written in chalk on the front walk: “Peace.”

Sad when people use such violence hurting children. I was saddened to here the little girl lost her leg. That's tough for a six year old. They should cut the arms and legs off those that did this then hang them with piano wire. William

Almost a year ago, 8-year-old Martin Richard wrote those words on a sign at school. He died Monday in the Boston bombings.

AP: Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev silent after read Miranda rights CBS/AP/ April 25, 2013, 12:57 PM
Sixteen hours after investigators began interrogating him, the surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings went silent: He'd just been read his constitutional rights.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev immediately stopped talking after a magistrate judge and a representative from the U.S. Attorney's office entered his hospital room and gave him his Miranda warning, a U.S. law enforcement source and four officials of both political parties briefed on the interrogation told The Associated Press. They insisted on anonymity because the briefing was private.
Before being advised of his rights, the 19-year-old suspect told authorities that his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, only recently had recruited him to be part of the attack that detonated pressure-cooker bombs at the marathon finish line, two U.S. officials said.
The CIA, however, had named Tamerlan to a terrorist database 18 months ago, a U.S. official told CBS News senior correspondent John Miller.
The new disclosure that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was included within a huge, classified database of known and suspected terrorists before the attacks was expected to drive congressional inquiries in coming weeks about whether the Obama administration adequately investigated tips from Russia that Tsarnaev had posed a security threat.
Shortly after the bombings, U.S. officials said the intelligence community had no information about threats to the marathon before the April 15 explosions that killed three people and injured more than 260.
Tsarnaev died Friday in a police shootout hours before Dzhokhar was discovered hiding in a boat in a suburban backyard.
Boston police Commissioner Ed Davis had said earlier that shots were fired from inside the boat, but Miller has reported that the suspect was unarmed when captured by police.
Police fired upon the boat after one officer on high ground saw the tarp covering the boat flip up and a hand come out holding an object, Miller reports. The officer thought the object was a bomb, prompting him to fire some rounds at the suspect. Other officers believed the object was a gun and the shots came from him, so they fired on the boat.
Washington is piecing together what happened and whether there were any unconnected dots buried in U.S. government files that, if connected, could have prevented the bombings.
Lawmakers who were briefed by the FBI said they have more questions than answers about the investigation of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., said lawmakers intend to pursue whether there was a breakdown in information-sharing, though Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, said he "hasn't seen any red flags thus far."
U.S. officials were expected to brief the Senate on the investigation Thursday.
The suspects' father said Thursday that he is leaving Russia for the United States in the next day or two, but their mother said she was still thinking it over.
Anzor Tsarnaev has expressed a desire to go to the U.S. to find out what happened with his sons, defend his hospitalized 19-year-old son Dzhokhar and if possible bring his older son's body back to Russia for burial.
Their mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, who was charged with shoplifting in the U.S. last summer, said she has been assured by lawyers that she would not be arrested, but was still deciding whether to go.
It is unclear whether the issue of their younger son's constitutional rights will matter since the FBI say he confessed to a witness. U.S. officials also said Wednesday that physical evidence, including a 9 mm handgun and pieces of a remote-control device commonly used in toys, was recovered from the bombing scene.
But the debate over whether suspected terrorists should be read their Miranda rights has become a major sticking point in the debate over how best to fight terrorism. Many Republicans, in particular, believe Miranda warnings are designed to build court cases, and only hinder intelligence gathering.
Christina DiIorio Sterling, a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, said in an email late Wednesday, "This remains an ongoing investigation and we don't have any further comment."
Investigators have said the brothers appeared to have been radicalized through jihadist materials on the Internet and have found no evidence tying them to a terrorist group.
U.S. investigators traveled to the predominantly Muslim province of Dagestan in Russia and were in contact with the brothers' parents, hoping to gain more information.
They are looking into whether Tamerlan, who spent six months in Russia's turbulent Caucasus region in 2012, was influenced by the religious extremists who have waged an insurgency against Russian forces in the area for years. The brothers have roots in Dagestan and neighboring Chechnya but had lived in the U.S. for about a decade.
Dzhokhar told the FBI that they were angry about the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the killing of Muslims there, officials said.
Dzhokhar's public defender had no comment on the matter Wednesday. His father has called him a "true angel," and an aunt has insisted he's not guilty.
Investigators have found pieces of remote-control equipment among the debris and were analyzing them, officials said. One official described the detonator as "close-controlled," meaning it had to be triggered within several blocks of the bombs.
That evidence could be key to the court case. And an FBI affidavit said one of the brothers told a carjacking victim during their getaway attempt, "Did you hear about the Boston explosion? I did that."
Officials also recovered a 9 mm handgun believed to have been used by Tamerlan from the site of an April 18 gunbattle that injured a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority officer, two U.S. officials said.
In other developments:
Vice President Joe Biden condemned the bombing suspects as "two twisted, perverted, cowardly, knockoff jihadis" while speaking at a memorial service Wednesday for Sean Collier, a campus police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who was ambushed in his cruiser three days after the bombing. More than 4,000 mourners paid tribute to the officer.
The Office of Health and Human Services in Massachusetts confirmed a Boston Herald report Wednesday that Tamerlan, his wife and toddler daughter had received welfare benefits up until last year, when he became ineligible based on family income. The state also says Tamerlan and his brother received welfare benefits as children through their parents while the family lived in Massachusetts.
The area around the marathon finish line was reopened to the public.

3 More in Custody in Boston Marathon Bombing Case: Cops
By COURTNEY CONDRON, BRIAN ROSS (@brianross) , LINSEY DAVIS (@LinseyDavis) , RHONDA SCHWARTZ and LEE FERRAN (@leeferran) May 1, 2013
Three more suspects have been taken into custody in connection to the deadly bombing at the Boston Marathon, the Boston Police Department tweeted today. The brief statement said more details were forthcoming.
Authorities suspect the bombing was carried out by two brothers, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Tamerlan was killed in a shootout with police days after the attack and Dzhokhar was injured and later taken into custody. Three people were killed and another 170 were injured in the April 15 dual bombing near the finish line at the Boston marathon.
News of the additional suspects comes after authorities said they had expanded their investigation and were reportedly interested in learning more about nearly a dozen persons of interest.
Late Tuesday, the Tsarnaev family was deciding what to do with Tamerlan's body.
Bella Tsarnaev, one of the young man's sisters, told ABC News in her first public statement that she and her sister Ailina have planned a proper Muslim burial for Tamerlan. The brothers' uncle, Ruslan Tsarni, told The Associated Press Tuesday the family would take the body, "We will do it. A family is a family."
When the Massachusetts Medical Examiner's Office was ready to release her husband's body, Tamerlan's widow Katherine Russell declined to take it herself, according to her attorney.
"It is Katherine Russell's wish that his remains be released to the Tsarnaev family, and we will communicate her wishes to the proper authorities," attorney Amato DeLuca said Tuesday. DeLuca also said Russell has been meeting with law enforcement and is providing "as much assistance to the investigation as she can."
The statement came as investigators said they may have pinpointed a turning point in Tamerlan's growth into alleged radical: a 2012 trip to Russia in which he may have had contact with Russian Islamists.
American officials said they are investigating whether Tamerlan had been in contact over the internet with a man named William Plotnikov, a Russian-Canadian and a fellow boxer, who had converted to Islam and joined the militant insurgency in the North Caucasus. Plotnikov was killed by Russian authorities while Tamerlan was in Russia, and Tamerlan left the country just days later.
Investigators also want to know what Tamerlan was doing with a known militant recruiter in the region named Mansur Mukhamed Nidal with whom Tamerlan was repeatedly seen leaving a controversial mosque in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan. Nidal was also killed by Russian authorities while Tamerlan was in Russia.
But despite what authorities said was photographic evidence the Tsarnaev brothers were behind the Boston bombing and comments reportedly from the surviving brother about how they executed the plot, family friend Britney Smith told ABC News she's not convinced.
"I was always taught to believe what you see and... what I see is two people walking with book bags. I don't see them planting down explosives. I don't see book bags being dropped," Smith said, apparently referring to images widely circulated by the FBI that show the brothers with bags either near or heading in the direction of each of the bomb sites. "If he [Dzhokhar] gets convicted and I see proof of him doing it, then I will be in total shock. I would be in disbelief and disgust that he would do that."

Bittersweet update from family devastated by marathon bombing
By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News
The little sister of the 8-year-old boy killed at the Boston Marathon has had surgery 11 times, and doctors only this week closed the wound created when one of the bombs blew off part of her left leg, her family said Thursday.
The girl, Jane Richard, could not communicate for the first two weeks after the attack, and she woke up “with difficult questions that needed to be answered,” the family said in a note posted on its Tumblr page.
Jane’s big brother was Martin Richard. He is the boy pictured, gap-toothed and smiling, in old photos wearing a Boston Bruins jersey and, in an image that shot around the Internet after his death, holding a poster that said, “No More Hurting People.”
“There are not words to describe how hard sharing this heartbreaking news was on all of us,” the note said.
The note — plainspoken, 800 words long and remarkable for its optimism — expresses thanks to first responders and the people of Boston. In aching succession, it lays out how each member of the family was touched by the attack.
The mother, Denise Richard, a school librarian, was blinded in one eye by the explosion, although the family said that doctors are pleased with how she is healing from surgeries.
The father, Bill Richard, who works for an environmental company, suffered shrapnel wounds and burns to his legs and loss of hearing. The family said that it was hopeful the hearing would improve over time.
Their third child, Henry, 11, has returned to fifth grade, “which gives him a needed sense of routine and normalcy,” the family said. A family spokesman, Larry Marchese, said that Henry, “through what could be a miracle,” suffered not a scratch.
One of the marathon bombs went off feet from where the whole family was standing, the family has said. Three people were killed and more than 260 injured in the two explosions April 15.
The 11th surgery for Jane Richard was performed Wednesday at Boston Children’s Hospital, and it was partly to prepare her leg for an eventual prosthesis, the family said. The little girl has warded off infections and other complications.
The note spoke of the need for additional surgeries for Jane and a “long and difficult road ahead for her.”
“Our focus as a family remains on healing from our injuries, both physical and emotional,” the family said.
The hospital did not immediately return a call for comment.
In an outpouring of gratitude, the family spoke of people at the marathon finish line who saved Jane’s life by getting to her quickly and tending to her injuries, and of police who “stood guard over Martin’s body so he was not alone.”
“Those officers will never know how comforting that was in our very darkest hour,” the family said.
Jane takes singing lessons with Boston City Singers, and when the lessons started again, the week after the attack, one little boy had a question about his missing classmate. The conductor told him, “That was just an accident. Janie got hurt. She is going to be OK.”
Martin Richard was a sports fan, and in citing tributes and vigils for the marathon victims around the world, the family made specific mention of remembrances offered by Boston teams and their rivals alike.
The weekend after the attack, the Boston Red Sox draped an enormous American flag over the famed wall known as the Green Monster at Fenway Park, and the crowd at a Bruins game roared through the last bars of the national anthem.
The note said: “Martin was ‘Boston Strong,’ and now we must all be for him and for all of the victims of this senseless attack as well as their loved ones who are going through a hell we wish we never had to know.”
It closed by addressing people who want to help.
“We know how difficult it is to stand idle when something terrible happens, so we thank you for respecting our privacy and giving us space to not only recuperate and rest, but also to ensure the one thing the attack does not break is our bond as a family,” it said.

This is so heartbreaking. His poster, and then he cruel way he was murdered.
His precious little sister will have both physical and emotional scars. I pray that she continues to improve.
This is still so hard to believe, to absorb.

Another good reason to have a national death penalty in some cases like this. Overwhelming evidence against a heinous crime. We need a national death penalty for some federal crimes. William

I think for federal crimes we do have the DP. Don't know Massachusetts law but he needs to die for what he did.

Federal prosecutors have announced they will seek the death penalty against 20-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in the Boston Marathon bombing.
Though Attorney General Eric Holder's decision to press for Tsarnaev's execution was widely expected, the move instantly raised the stakes in what could be one of the most wrenching trials the city has ever seen.
The twin blasts killed three people and wounded more than 260 others, and 17 of the 30 federal charges against him — including using a weapon of mass destruction to kill — carry the possibility of the death penalty.
'The nature of the conduct at issue and the resultant harm compel this decision,' Holder said in a statement.
Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty. A trial date has not been set.
Dzhokar's mother was told the news but is still coming to terms with it.
'How can I feel about this? I feel nothing,' Zubeidat Tsarnaev said to ABC.
Prosecutors allege that Tsarnaev, then 19, and his 26-year-old brother, ethnic Chechens from Russia who had lived in the Boston area for about a decade, built and planted two pressure cooker bombs near the finish line of the marathon in April to retaliate against the U.S. for its military action in Muslim countries.
His older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, died in a shootout with police during a getaway attempt days after the bombing.
Seeking execution: Government prosecutors will now been seeking the death penalty for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev who is the younger of the brother duo who set the bombs at the April attack
Up to him: Attorney General Eric Holder was tasked with deciding whether or not the federal prosecutors would be seeking the death penalty or just a life sentence for the bomber
Caught: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was wounded but escaped on foot and was later found hiding in a boat parked in a yard in a Boston suburb days after the bombing
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was wounded but escaped on foot and was later found hiding in a boat parked in a yard in a Boston suburb. Authorities have said he wrote about his motivation for the bombing on the inside of the boat.
'The US Government is killing our innocent civilians…. I can't stand to see such evil go unpunished,' and 'We Muslims are one body, you hurt one you hurt us all,' he allegedly wrote.
The bombings stunned the nation during one of Boston's most celebrated events as runners crossed the finish line and friends, families and spectators were gathered to cheer them on.
Killed in the bombings were: Martin Richard, 8, of Boston; Krystle Campbell, 29, of Medford; and Lu Lingzi, 23, a Boston University graduate student from Shenyang, China. At least 16 others lost limbs.
Tsarnaev also is charged in the slaying of an MIT police officer and the carjacking of a motorist during the brothers' getaway attempt.
Helping the wounded: The twin blasts killed three people and wounded more than 260 others including Jeff Bauman, who lost both of his legs
Tsarnaev's case has attracted a high-profile defense team, including Judy Clarke, a San Diego attorney who has negotiated plea agreements with prosecutors to spare her clients the death penalty, among them Unabomber Ted Kaczynski and Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph.
The Tsarnaev brothers had roots in the turbulent Russian regions of Dagestan and Chechnya, areas that have become recruiting grounds for Islamic extremists.
The indictment alleges the brothers downloaded bomb-making instructions from an al Qaeda magazine and gathered material online about Islamic jihad and martyrdom.
Massachusetts abolished its state death penalty in 1984, and repeated efforts to reinstate it have failed.
Tsarnaev is the third person in the state to be charged under the federal death penalty.
Since the federal death penalty was reinstated in 1988, 70 death penalty sentences have been imposed, but only three people have been executed, including Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh in 2001.
Eight people have been taken off death row by a judicial or executive action, while 59 people remain on death row, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
The last federal execution was in 2003, when Louis Jones Jr. was put to death for the kidnapping and murder of 19-year-old Army Private Tracie McBride.
Victim: Martin Richard, 8, was one of the three people killed

At least they are going for the death penalty. The scumbag lawyer will probably plead out. I just hope they don't and go for the death penalty. Has anyone heard any news about the family of Martin? I'd like to know how they are doing. William

Martin Richard’s family continues its recovery

Jane Richard, who lost her older brother Martin and her left leg in the Boston Marathon bombing, is recovering and using a prosthetic.
Four months after the second bomb at the Boston Marathon killed their youngest son and severed their daughter’s left leg, the Richard family is doing its best to overcome the devastation of that day and resume a normal life.
In their first public statement since May, Bill and Denise Richard said Thursday that they have returned to their Dorchester home after months spent at local hospitals and are coping as well as they can with the loss of their 8-year-old son, Martin.
“While we have made progress with our physical injuries, the emotional pain seems every bit as new as it was four months ago,” they said. “An hour doesn’t go by that we don’t feel the agony of Martin’s death and the senseless way it came about.”
They added: “The pain is constant, and even the sweetest moments can become heartbreaking when we are struck by the realization that ‘Martin would have loved this.’ ”

It is their 7-year-old daughter, Jane, who lost her leg to the blast. The family announced that Jane left Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital last month. She has been fitted with a prosthetic leg and is excited to finally be sleeping again in her bed at home. She spent 39 days at Boston Children’s Hospital and more time at the rehabilitation facility.
“Jane continues to be an incredible source of inspiration — and exhaustion,’’ the Richards said. “The loss of her leg has not slowed her one bit, or deterred her in any way. As we knew she would, when we finally returned home, Jane walked into the house with the aid of her crutches, but under her own power.”
She is still learning to get around on her prosthetic limb, to which she is adjusting slowly.
“When she is able to have it on, she struts around on it with great pride and a total sense of accomplishment,” they said. “Her strength, balance, and comfort with the leg improve every day.”
They added: “Watching her dance with her new leg, which has her weight primarily on the other leg, is absolutely priceless.’’
The oldest sibling, 11-year-old Henry, was with the family on Boylston Street that April day but was not physically injured in the bombing. Since then, Henry has attended “cool overnight camps,’’ spent time with close friends, and looked out for his sister and parents.
“Henry has continued to be strong, attentive, and protective of all of us,” they wrote.
Denise Richard is still coping with the loss of vision in one eye after being struck by a ball bearing from the bomb. Bill Richard recently had an operation to repair a ruptured eardrum and is coping with tinnitus, or ringing in his ears. He remains without a substantial amount of his hearing and has discomfort from burns on his legs. Neither Denise nor Bill has returned to work.
“We are still dealing with our injuries and their impact on our lives. But we are also making progress, and, just like Jane, we each endure the occasional setback here and there along the way,’’ the Richards said.
Until last month, no one in the family had spent the night at home since the bombings. Denise Richard slept beside Jane at the hospital while her husband spent the nights with Henry at a nearby hotel. “We were determined that none of us would sleep at home until all of us could do so,” they said. “As so many things have been, returning home without Martin certainly made that important milestone bittersweet, but we know he was with us, as he is every moment of every day.”
This fall, after the children return to school, the family is hoping to map out a way to “honor Martin’s memory in a meaningful and impactful way.’’ Bill Richard plans to return to his job as vice president of operations at an environmental consulting firm, Denise Richard hopes to resume her position as a librarian at a charter school in Dorchester.
Larry Marchese, a spokesman for the family, said the Richards have been eating out and trying to resume their routines, even taking Jane to see a Taylor Swift concert. But that comes between three visits a week to Spaulding for adjustments to Jane’s prosthetic limb and other appointments for Bill Richard’s hearing loss and his wife’s blindness in one eye.
When they are not seeing doctors or physical therapists, the Richards are going through the many gifts they have received over the past several months from around the world, including an American flag that two ultramarathoners brought them from the Pentagon after running to Boston from Washington, D.C.; about a dozen medals from those who finished the Marathon; and everything from financial contributions to handmade quilts.
“Throughout all that has happened, we have worked hard to maintain our bond as a family,’’ the Richards said. “With the love and support of family and friends, including those who were total strangers just four months ago, we feel like we are succeeding.”
