Father accused of abusing infant out on bond for previous child abuse allegations

(KMOV) --A father is accused of fracturing his three-month-old son’s skull. News 4 has learned he was out on bond, accused of abusing another baby.

Jeremy Giles, 25, is now charged for the latest crime in University City.

Doctors at St. Louis Children’s Hospital told police, there’s no way either child’s injuries were from accidentally being dropped.

The first time around, Giles was charged with a lesser crime.

But now he is being held in the St. Louis County Justice Center and can’t get out unless he pays $200,000.

That’s a far cry from the $350 he had to pay when he was charged with harming a 1 month-old in Jefferson County in 2011, allegedly giving the child two black eyes and bruising.

He’s not gone to trial for that yet.

News 4 spoke with child abuse advocates Thursday who said the whole situation is heartbreaking and tragic, although sadly, it’s not even that uncommon.

Typically, a judge would order an alleged abuser to stay away from children---it’s unclear if that happened in this case.

But experts said children are very rarely abused only once. Babies under three-years-old are especially vulnerable to repeated abuse.

“Infants or young children who don’t have words, it’s impossible for them to report what’s happened or what’s been happening to seek out what they need,” said Dorothy Denny with the UMSL Children’s Advocacy Center.

Other experts said pressure must be kept on judges to keep alleged abusers away from kids until their trials.

Giles is scheduled to be back before a judge next week.

The mother knew about the abuse, she needs to be arrested also.
