Protective order against Bedford stabbing suspect expired in January

BEDFORD -- An estranged boyfriend was arrested in the fatal stabbing
of a woman and an 8-year-old boy who were found dead in a Bedford
apartment Wednesday night, police said.

A 12-year-old boy who was stabbed is recovering at Cook Children's
Hospital in Fort Worth, said Lt. David Smith in a statement released
Thursday morning.

Roxann Diana Sanchez, 30, and Anthony Reyes Figueroa, 8, were found
in a unit of the complex at about 8:40 p.m. in the 1400 block of Park
Place Blvd. as officers responded to a 911 call.

"Screaming, pretty much, was what I heard," said Melissa Juarez, a neighbor.
"Like a screaming, 'No, no.' It's horrible."

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol arrested Cedric Ricks, 38, in connection
with the crime. The suspect was pulled over at about 11:15 p.m.
Wednesday on Interstate 35 near Wynnewood, Okla., about 70 miles north
of the Red River.

Investigators said Ricks was the woman's estranged boyfriend. The
couple had one child together, an 8-month-old boy. He was found
unharmed at the apartment Wednesday night. Marissa Gonzales, spokeswoman
for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, said the
toddler is now in foster care.

A date for a custody hearing has not been set.

Ricks was previously arrested after allegedly choking Sanchez on
Nov. 18, 2012. He was indicted on the charge in December of 2012 and an
emergency protective order forbidding Ricks contact with Sanchez
expired on January 15.

Gonzales said that incident was the only time the state had to contact the family.

"At the time that case was closed, the mother was having no contact
with the father, was protective of her children and was not allowing him
access to them," she said.

Juarez said she saw Ricks at the Bedford apartment daily.

"He's been living here the whole time," Juarez said. "I see him every afternoon coming home."

Juarez, who was injured and on crutches, said she has been off work
for about nine weeks. Other neighbors said Ricks had an attitude,
especially toward children.

"Some of the people in the complex had trouble with him too, with him
getting on to their children for making too much noise," said Trina
Barry, a neighbor.

Ricks is at the Garvin County Jail in Okla. awaiting extradition back
to Texas. He is being held on two counts of murder and one count of
attempted murder.

Sanchez worked as a medical assistant at The Woman's Group, an OB-GYN
practice in Bedford. Her co-workers released a statement Thursday. The
statement read, in part:

"Our hearts are broken by the deaths of Roxann Sanchez and her
son. She was a beloved member of our work family for more than a year.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones."

Brother Of Murdered Mother: “I Lost My Best Friend”

BEDFORD (CBSDFW.COM) - The family of a mother who
was murdered in her own home, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend, is speaking
out for the first time since the attack.

Roxann Sanchez, 30, and her children, a 12-year-old and and 8-year-old boy, were attacked in their Bedford apartment. All three were stabbed multiple times.
Sanchez and her 8-year-old son died from their wounds. The 12-year-old
survived the attack and was able to call 911. A third boy, an
8-month-old child of Sanchez and Ricks, was also taken to a hospital,
though police said he was uninjured.

“We want to say thank you for all the help and support from everybody,” said Chris Olivo, Sanchez’s only brother.

Olivo says his close-knit family is reeling from the tragedy that
left his sister and his nephew dead and another nephew hospitalized.

“I lost my best friend,” he said.

Olivo described his sister as a doting mother, who loved to help
people, which she was able to do in her work as a medical assistant.

“No matter how hard of a time Roxann was going through, she always had a smile and helped somebody else,” he said.

He said her children were very much like their mother, always smiling
and laughing and jokingly called them “mama’s boys” because Sanchez had
a very close relationship with each one.

Sanchez was loved by many and dozens of friends have donated clothing and baby items for Sanchez’s remaining two children.

“She loved her children more than anything and would do anything for
them,” said Amanda Gomez, Sanchez’s best friend of 18 years. “You can
look into their eyes and see her.”

Family and friends now say their mission is keep Sanchez’s memory
alive especially in the minds of her two boys, who will now grow up
without a mother.

“We’ll make sure that they always remember her and they’ll know what
type of person she was, how much they were loved by her and that she’s
watching over them,” Gomez said. “They will always know their mom.”

Donations to the family can be made at American Airlines Federal Credit Union under account Roxann Sanchez and children.

Family members declined to discuss the murders and the prime suspect
in the case, Cedric Ricks, saying they had concerns over legal issues.

Ricks was extradited Friday to Tarrant County jail. He arrived with a
black eye and bruises on his body. Officials at the jail say Ricks was
assaulted by other inmates in Oklahoma.

Until Friday afternoon, Ricks was being held in Oklahoma on a $2
million Texas warrant. Now back in North Texas, Ricks has been charged
with two counts of Capital Murder, which is punishable by life without
parole or the death penalty. He has also been charged with Serious
Bodily Injury to a Child for the attack on the 12-year-old.

It's one thing for a woman to risk her own life by having a brutal nut case in her bed, but it is quite another to put your children at risk. What a shame, he was living there the whole time.
