Dorothy Spourdalakis is being held without bail after the murder/attempted suicide, police say.
An Illinois mother has admitted to trying to kill her severely autistic son with sleeping pills and then finishing the job with a kitchen knife to his chest, authorities said.
Mother Dorothy Spourdalakis, 50, and family friend Jolanta Agatha Skrodzka, 44, said the 14-year-old boy's "emotional condition had deteriorated" to the point where they wanted to end his pain — and their own.

Jolanta Agatha Skrodzka, who helped care for Alex, allegedly helped Dorothy Spourdalakis kill him.
So the women then took an overdose of pills in an attempt to kill themselves, too.
"The murder was committed in a cold, calculated and premeditated manner," attorney Maureen O'Brien said in court Wednesday.

Alex is seen in the hospital in February. ‘He was big and strong and unwilling to go to the doctor,’ Police Chief Rodger Loni said. ‘We had to restrain and hold him down.’
After failing to kill Alex Spourdalakis with an overdose of sleeping pills, Spourdalakis stabbed her son four times in the chest with a kitchen knife, twice striking his heart, before slitting his wrist, nearly severing his hand, prosecutors said.
Afterward, Skrodzka used the knife to kill the family cat because they did not want the feline sent to the pound after their deaths, according to the prosecution.

The 14-year-old boy's 'emotional condition had deteriorated,' according to his mother.
"They cleaned the knife, they put the knife back in the butcher block and took the pills and laid down in bed next to him," River Grove Police Chief Rodger Loni told local station WLS.
The boy's father discovered the murder/attempted suicide after he could not reach his ex-wife by phone and went to the apartment to see why he could not get through, Loni said.

Dorothy Spourdalakis has been charged with first-degree murder in the brutal death of her son, Alex.
The women were found in a semi-conscious state near suicide notes they signed, admitting to their roles in the murder, police said.
Spourdalakis and Skrodzka were taken to a nearby hospital and charged with first-degree murder upon their release Tuesday. They are being held without bail, reported the Chicago Tribune.
Loni had been to the apartment several times before to help get the boy to doctor's appointments.

A Department of Children and Family Services representative said the organization had offered to assist the family but they refused.
Spourdalakis was featured in a news report three months ago accusing a local hospital of mistreating her son.
