Step-cousin arrested over six-year-old girl found dead with multiple neck and stomach stab wounds in dumpster close to her home

A man wanted in connection with the murder of a 6-year-old girl in Louisiana has been arrested.

Ahlittia North was found in a dumpster in Harvey, Louisiana, the early hours of Tuesday with multiple stab wounds to her body.

Late Tuesday night, Matter Flugence, the nephew of Ahlittia's stepfather was located and apprehended after he was spotted by a patrol deputy and two Westwego Police Department officers.

Flugence, who had reportedly babysat Ahlittia on several occasions, was carrying a knife when he was arrested.

She was reported missing on Saturday morning when her mother Lisa North, 20, and stepfather Albert Hill, 46, discovered she had gone from her bedroom in Harvey, Louisiana.

Authorities said someone also took her brown and plaid comforter, a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Police combed the area surrounding the family's apartment at the weekend but no trace of the child was found.

The trash can had already been searched over the weekend and investigators are trying to determine when the body was disposed of there.

The dumpster was searched again after DNA tests showed that a pool of blood found on Monday  was that of the missing girl.

Ahlittia had been stabbed in the abdomen and had two 'very aggressive' stab wounds to her neck which were likely fatal, the coroner reported.

Ms North said Jefferson Parish authorities contacted her in the early hours of Tuesday to say that her daughter's body had been found nearby.

The distraught mother told the Times-Picayune: 'They could have brought her back home, but they killed her and put her in a trash can.'

On Monday, police said they were seeking 20-year-old Matthew Flugence as a person of interest. Flugence is the nephew of the girl's stepfather.

He is wanted in connection with the alleged sexual battery of an 11-year-old girl in the neighborhood, nola.com reported.

His brother Russell has been arrested over obstruction of justice in connection with the investigation today.

Detectives went door to door in the early hours of Tuesday to ask neighbors if they had heard anything suspicious. Both FBI and sheriff's officials were at the scene on Tuesday.

It wasn't clear early whether investigators had previously searched the dumpster where the body was found.

Tuesday is garbage pick-up day in the neighborhood. The dumpster was taken from the scene at 5am, neighbors told the Times-Picayune.

Neighbors and friends have been gathering near the family's home since early this morning to hold a vigil, leaving flowers, notes and teddy bears in memory of the little girl.  

A cause of death has not been confirmed but an autopsy is set to take place today.

Sheriff's office spokesman Colonel John Fortunato declined to comment until a news conference scheduled for 3pm on Tuesday (CT).

This is another horrible murder of a poor little child.  It seems to get worse even while adult murders are going down. 

I'm assuming he raped this poor little girl and that is why he murdered her.  What an evil bastard.

Man, 20, 'claimed his 6-year-old step-cousin seduced him before he raped her and stabbed her to death'

A man suspected of murdering his six-year-old step-cousin has claimed that she seduced him before he raped her and stabbed her to death, police have said.

Matthew Flugence, 20, allegedly told a detective that little Ahlittia North put a blanket on the ground behind an apartment block in Harvey, Louisiana before telling him she wanted to have sex.


'In his words, the little girl, she wanted to have sex with him,' Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Detective Travis Eserman during a preliminary examination, the Times-Picayune reported.

Flugence allegedly admitted to having sex with the girl on July 14 before stabbing her four times - in the abdomen and the neck - and then watching her fall back to the blanket, Eserman said.

'He said he just watched her die,' Eserman testified in the hearing on Wednesday.

After the alleged grisly killing, detectives said Flugence, who is the nephew of Ahlittia's step-father, carried on with his day, even attending a family birthday party.

The little girl was reported missing when her mother Lisa North, 20, and stepfather Albert Hill, 46, discovered she had vanished from her bedroom in Harvey.

Three days later, her body was found wrapped in a blanket inside a garbage bag and dumped in a trashcan that was left out on the curb near to where she lived.

The trashcan had previously been checked and nothing was found inside, but it was searched again after DNA tests showed that a pool of blood found nearby was that of the missing girl.

Flugence was arrested carrying a knife that he said he had used to kill the girl. Tests are still underway to determine if it was the murder weapon.


Authorities noted issues with his four recorded statements; police told him there were bullet casings near her body and he claimed he shot the girl, but there were no gunshot wounds to her body.

'In his first statement, he says he shot her,' Eserman testified. 'Then he goes into, "I don't know how she was hurt. There was just blood".'

Likewise, despite his claim that he had sex with the girl, an autopsy showed no evidence of sexual activity, the Times-Picayune reported.

He also called the weapon both a pocket knife and a sword, police said.


It is not yet clear whether defense attorneys will seek a mental evaluation for Flugence in a bid to avoid a death sentence.


Evidence, including the knife and the blanket, is still being processd at the Sheriff's Office Crime Lab.

After hearing the testimony, a judge ruled that Flugence should continue to be held on a charge of first-degree murder without bond.

He also faces charges of sexual battery after allegedly sexually touching a 10-year-old relative in April or May of 2012. The girl revealed the incident the day Ahlittia was killed.

Flugence's brother, Russell Flugence, 21, was also charged with failing to report a felony after he claimed that his brother told him he killed Ahlittia. He has pleaded not guilty.

After her body was discovered in July, Ms North told the Times-Picayune: 'They could have brought her back home, but they killed her and put her in a trash can.'

Outrageous claim indeed.  Since when does a six year old ask for sex?  At least medical so far don't support rape.  He probably tried and she fought and he got mad and went ballistic killing her.  He'll get his either way.  Hopefully he won't get off on a mental.  William

Reminds me of the judge who claimed the little girl was older than her chronological age so he gave the rapist who was 35 years her senior a month in jail  The girl committed suicide.
