A California man was sentenced to life in prison without parole Thursday for sexually assaulting a 5-year-old relative in Fort Worth.

Julio Ortiz Chavarria, 45, was convicted Wednesday of two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child under six. He received the maximum sentence Thursday, according to the Tarrant County district attorney’s office.

On Aug. 19, 2011, a 5-year-old girl told her mother that Chavarria had sexually assaulted her. The girl was taken for an examination at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, according to court records.

Chavarria had abandoned his truck in a Walmart parking lot in Arlington and fled to California. Fort Worth police issued a warrant, and Chavarria was later extradited to Texas. He had prior convictions in California for robbery, drug possession and theft, according to the Tarrant County district attorney.

“This defendant has a pattern of taking things that don’t belong to him,” said Tarrant County Prosecutor Melinda Westmoreland in a written statement. “This time he took something that we can never get back—the innocence of a child.”
