Sanford parents charged with abusing child with electrical cords, bamboo stick

SANFORD -- 
A Seminole County father and step-mother are behind bars accused of using household items to beat their child.

The Sanford Police Department said a school resource officer at Seminole High School, where the victim goes to school, noticed the abuse and saw physical injuries on the student Thursday.

According to the arrest, the resource officer spoke to the victim who told the officer about the abuse.

The report said the parents, 39-year-old Rakesh Persaud and 34-year-old Roseanna Prasnauth, used a wide range of household items like electrical cords, duct tape and metal cooking spoons to abuse the child. They even used a pen to stick into the child's scalp. Police said the student told them it was their typical way of punishment.

The arrest report shows that officers saw many scars and open wounds on the student's stomach and back.

Persaud and Prasnauth were both arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse.

Police said when the officer confronted the parents they both denied abusing the child but the stepmother did admit that those household items, the electrical cord, metal spoons and duct tape were at their home.
