The cellphone of the subject of a Kansas Amber Alert on Tuesday night last pinged on northbound US-35 highway near Lenexa, authorities said in a news release.
The Amber Alert was issued by authorities just before 9:30 p.m. for Nomei Velazquez, 15. A Texas newspaper reported the teenager went missing Monday after not returning home from school
The possible suspect in the matter is identified by authorities as Juan Fabian Arenas Delacruz.
The two were possibly in a silver 2004 Volkswagon Passat with a Texas plate of DF7T507. They may have been traveling north along the Interstate 35 corridor in the Kansas City metro area. Authorities say information indicated they may still have been in the area as of the time of the Amber Alert.
Velazquez is described as standing 4-feet, 11 inches tall and weighing 120 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes.
Velazquez was last seen wearing a white shirt, blue jeans, black tennis shoes. She was carrying a brown purse and wearing glasses. Her nickname is Mimi.
Delacruz is listed at 5-feet, 11 inches tall with a weight of 170 pounds. He has some facial hair.
An article on the Daily Sentinel website in Nacogdoches, Texas, indicates the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office has been looking for the teenager.
The sheriff’s office reported she went missing Monday after being last seen leaving school on foot. She reportedly didn’t return home.
The Daily Sentinel article quoted a news release from the sheriff’s office that spelled the teen’s name differently — Noemi Velasquez — than what the Amber Alert used.
The town is about 150 miles north of Houston.
Anyone with information is asked by authorities to call 911 or the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-KS-CRIME.

UPDATE: KBI says Amber alert for Texas girl misdirected
Updated: Thu 9:01 AM, Feb 27, 2014
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says an Amber alert issued this week suggesting a missing Texas teenager could be in the Kansas City area was a mistake caused by miscalculating the location of her cellphone ping.
WIBW reports the alert was sent around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after Texas authorities said a ping of 15-year-old Nomei "Mimi" Velazquez's cellphone indicated she may be in the Lenexa and Overland Park areas.
But KBI special agent Mark Malick says it appears the ping was read wrong, and that there is no evidence the girl's phone was ever in the area.
Velazquez was found safe on Wednesday, according to the Nacogdoches Co. Sheriff's Office. The Texas teen was found in an motel room near the Texas Tech campus.
