Simsbury Dad Avoids Prison In Child Abuse Case

By DAVID OWENS, The Hartford Courant

3:39 p.m. EST, March 7, 2014

HARTFORD — A   father charged two years ago with assaulting his infant son pleaded guilty Friday to misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment and received a two-year suspended prison sentence and two years of probation.

Cory Trant, 35, initially faced charges of first-degree assault and risk of injury to a child, felonies that exposed him to decades in prison.

State prosecutor Elizabeth Tanaka agreed to reduce the charges after determining that Trant's co-defendant, Heather Scott, 42, was more culpable for the series of injuries the baby suffered, which included multiple fractures to his legs and ribs and bleeding on the brain. The child is in the custody of the state Department of Children and Families and living with Trant's parents.

Trant voluntarily terminated his parental rights. Scott's parental rights were terminated in juvenile court, but she is appealing.

Scott, the baby's mother, pleaded guilty Jan. 31 to risk of injury to a minor, a felony, and is scheduled to be sentenced March 28.
In sentencing Trant, Hartford Superior Court Judge Joan K. Alexander also put in a place a protective order on behalf of the child that will not expire until he turns 18. He may not visit the child unless DCF approves.

Both were charged after an investigation by Simsbury police that began after Trant and Scott took the injured child to Connecticut Children's Medical Center for treatment on March 6, 2012.

The child's left thigh was swollen, but staff at the hospital found other injuries that indicated to them the child had been abused.

Tanaka told Alexander that the baby appears to have recovered from the injuries. The baby has attained developmental bench marks and "has no lasting injuries," she said.
