GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) - A woman has been charged after her newborn baby boy was found in a trash can outside a Greenville home on Monday, according to police.
Greenville police said a homeowner was there to check on the house on Chaney Street in the Nicholtown community when he noticed a trail of blood.
Police said the blood trail led to the trash can, where the newborn was found along with bloody towels. The baby was still alive, but he was in critical condition when he was found.
According to warrants, the baby was in a plastic grocery bag which was wrapped in a pink blanket.
Police said they did not know how long the child had been there.
The baby's mother, 28-year-old Sharon Ferguson, was taken into custody for questioning in front of a liquor store at Laurens Road and East Washington Street, police confirmed.
Ferguson was later charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of unlawful neglect of a child or helpless person. Her bond was set at $125,000.
The baby is in stable condition at this time, officials said Monday night.
Police said they want to remind people of the safe haven law that provides options for people needing to give up infants up to 30 days old. Read more about the protections here.
